Title: Learn to subtract 2-digit numbers from 3-digit numbers with regrouping.

You can already subtract tens from a 3-digit number with hundreds, tens, and ones. In this lesson, you'll learn to subtract any two-digit number from some 3-digit numbers, like this.
142 minus 77.
We start subtracting in the ones place.
We can't subtract 7 from 2, so we have to take a ten to make ten ones.
We cross out the 4 to show that we took a ten.
We put 3 here to show there are 3 tens left and we put a 1 here to show we have 10 ones.
Now we have 12 minus 7, which is 5.
Now the tens place.
We have 3 minus 7. We can't subtract 7 from 3, so we have to take a hundred to make ten tens.
We cross out the 1 to show we took a hundred.
We don't need to put anything here, because there are no hundreds left.
We put a 1 here to show that we made ten tens.
Now we have 13 tens minus 7 tens, which is 6 tens.
Now the hundreds place.
We have no hundreds left, since we crossed out the one hundred and no number here.
That means we're done.
The answer is 65.
Another example. 137 minus 68.
We start subtracting in the ones place.
We can't subtract 8 from 7, so we have to take a ten to make ten ones.
We cross out the 3 and put 2 here to show there are 2 tens left.
We put a 1 here to show we have 10 ones.
Now we have 17 minus 8 which is 9.
Now the tens place.
We have 2 minus 6, so we have to take a hundred to make ten tens.
We cross out the 1, but we don't put anything here because there are no hundreds left.
We put a 1 here to show that we made ten tens.
Now we have 12 tens minus 6 tens, which is 6 tens.
Now the hundreds place.
We have no hundreds left, since we crossed out the one hundred and no number here.
That means we're done.
The answer is 69.
Another example. 113 minus 45.
We start subtracting in the ones place.
We can't subtract 5 from 3, so we have to take a ten to make ten ones.
We cross out the 1 and put 0 here to show there are no tens left.
We put a 1 here to show we have 10 ones.
Now we have 13 minus 5, which is 8.
Now the tens place.
We have 0 minus 4, so we have to take a hundred to make ten tens.
We cross out the 1, but we don't put anything here because we have no hundreds left.
We put a 1 here to show that we made ten tens.
Now we have 10 tens minus 4 tens, which is 6 tens.
Now the hundreds place.
We have no hundreds left, since we crossed out the one hundred and no number here.
That means we're done.
The answer is 68.
In the rest of this lesson, you'll solve problems like these.

Q: Do you speak at conferences?
A: Yes! My ability to speak at teacher conferences during the school year is "tight" because I am currently a classroom teacher and only have a set number of personal days. However, the SUMMER time is wide-open and I'd love to come to your conference and do a session/seminar! Some of the topics I've typically spoken to teachers about include music and technology in the classroom, classroom management, running a creative morning meeting, and utilizing YouTube in the early childhood classroom. Email me at pete@harrykindergartenmusic.com to make a speaking request.

Q: Can my class perform a "Harry Kindergarten song" for an audience?
A: If you desire to have your class or group of students perform one of my “Harry Kindergarten” songs for an audience, please note that there is a $6.00 PERFORMANCE FEE.

Here are some hypothetical examples of performance groups:
* Students perform a song for an audience during a graduation ceremony.
* Students perform a song for an audience during a school or community talent show.
* Students perform a song for an audience during a school assembly.
If you are unsure if you need to purchase a performance license or not, please inquire at: pete@harrykindergartenmusic.com. If you want more details about using a song multiple years or multiple classes, etc., e-mail me for a detailed PDF file.

Title: Learn to subtract 1-digit numbers from multiples of ten with regrouping.

You can already subtract a one-digit number from 10 and 20.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to subtract a 1-digit number from other numbers made up of tens.
Here's an example. 40 minus 2.
Forty is 4 tens.
We start subtracting in the ones place.
We can't subtract 2 from 0, so we have to take a ten from 40 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 4 in 40 to show we took a ten and we enter a 3 here to show we have 3 tens left in the tens place, which is 30.
We put a 1 here to show that we made ten ones.
Now we subtract 2 from the 10 ones.
10 minus 2 is 8.
In the tens place, there's nothing to subtract, so we bring down the 3.
That gives us 38.
So 40 minus 2 is 38.
Another example. 60 minus 7.
Sixty is 6 tens.
We start subtracting in the ones place.
We can't subtract 7 from 0, so we have to take a ten from 60 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 6 in 60 to show we took a ten and write a 5 above it to show there are 5 tens left, which is 50.
We show that we made ten ones by putting a 1 here.
Now we subtract 7 from the 10 ones.
10 minus 7 is 3.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 5 we have left.
That gives us 53.
So 60 minus 7 is 53.
Last example. 80 minus 4.
We start with the ones place.
We can't subtract 4 from 0, so we have to take a ten from 80 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 8 in 80 to show that we took a ten.
And we write 7 here to show there are 7 tens left, which is 70.
We put a 1 here to show that we made ten ones.
Now we subtract 4 from 10.
10 minus 4 is 6.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 7 we have left.
That gives us 76.
So 80 minus 4 is 76.
In the rest of this lesson, you'll work problems like these. You can use these boxes if you want, but you don’t have to.

Title: Learn to subtract 1-digit numbers from 2-digit numbers Pt. 2.

You already know how to subtract when you have to take a ten.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to use that to subtract with numbers that have both tens and ones.
Here's an example. 43 minus 7.
We start with the ones place.
We can't subtract 7 from 3, so we have to take a ten from 40 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 4 in 40 and we enter a 3 here to show we have 3 tens left.
Now we put a 1 here to show that we have 13 ones.
So now we have 13 minus 7.
13 minus 7 is 6, so we put a 6 in the ones place of the answer.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 3 for the 3 tens we have left.
That gives us 36.
So 43 minus 7 is 36.
Another example. 65 minus 8.
We start with the ones place.
We can't subtract 8 from 5, so we have to take a ten from 60 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 6 in 60 and we enter a 5 here to show that we have 5 tens left.
And we enter a 1 here to show we have 15 ones.
Now we subtract 8 from 15.
15 minus 8 is 7.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 5 for the 5 tens we have left.
That gives us 57.
So 65 minus 8 is 57.
Last example. 37 minus 8.
We can't subtract 8 from 7, so we have to take a ten from 30 to make 10 ones.
We cross out the 3 in 30 and we enter a 2 here to show that we have 2 tens left.
And we enter a 1 here to show we have 17 ones.
Now we subtract 8 from 17.
17 minus 8 is 9.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 2 for the 2 tens we have left.
That gives us 29.
So 37 minus 8 is 29.
In the rest of this lesson, you'll work problems like these. You can use these boxes if you want, but you don’t have to.

Lyrics:
These are the doubles, one through twelve
We’re adding numbers to themselves
These are the doubles, one through twelve
We’re adding numbers to themselves

One plus one is two
Two plus two is four
Three plus three is six
Four plus four is eight
Time to concentrate
Four plus four is eight

Five plus five is ten, my friend
Six plus six is twelve
Seven and seven make fourteen
And eight plus eight is sixteen

Nine plus nine is eighteen
And ten and ten make twenty
Two elevens are twenty-two (twenty-two)
And twelve plus twelve is twenty-four

These are the doubles, one through twelve
We’re adding numbers to themselves
These are the doubles, one through twelve
We’re adding numbers to themselves
