Madeline Scotto has gone through a lot of math teaching methods.

At age 100, she still teaches at Brooklyn's St. Ephrem's School.

We talked with Madeline and no other approach to mathematics has caused her more concern than Common Core.

Although math skills are considered notoriously hard to change, Johns Hopkins University researchers improved preschoolersโ€™ arithmetic performance simply by exercising their intuitive number sense with a quick computer game.

Video transcript

[playful music and whistling]
Little girl:1, 2, 3
Woman: Do you think math is easy or hard?
Hard.
Is math hard for kids?
Hard.
Easy!
Easy.
Man:I t's easy? Why?
Uh. I don't know.
[playful music and whistling]
Graphic: Johns Hopkins Researchers studying the human mind found a simple game that makes kids better at math.
Computer female voice: Let's play a game!
Each of them will have some dots.
Children are playing this computerized dot game in which they see two collections of dots.
Now which ones more?
The dots are flashed too quickly to count so they just have to use that intuitive gut number sense that we know we share with other animal species and that even newborn infants have.
Blue!
Computer:That's right!
All kids have to do is tell us whether there are more blue dots or more yellow dots.
Yellow!
Computer:You did it!
Awesome job!
1, 2, 3, 4
After the dot game we gave children a portion of a standardized math assessment.
Which one's closer to 3 when you count?
The children who in the dot game had the opportunity to sharpen their abilities by starting with the easier problems and gradually moving toward the hard problems did better at math.
20!
Our research showed basically with a five minute simple computer game that has nothing to do with numbers children actually could change their math performance from like a 60 percentile to like an 80 percentile.
Good job! What about seven?
By making kids better at doing these really simple dot judgements we also made them better at school based math at least temporarily.
How did you know whether there was more blue or more yellow?
Because I'm intelligent!
[laughter]
These results are really exciting to use because they show a very clear connection between an evolutionarily ancient set of abilities and a uniquely human set of formal math abilities.
Computer: Yay!
That raises lots of interesting questions including how long this kind of effect lasts and whether we can also improve children's math performance in a classroom setting.
[gasps]
Blue!
That's right!
[playful music and whistling]

Explicit instruction is a critical feature in teaching students who struggle with math. By walking through exactly what you want a student to know and allowing them time to practice, using explicit instruction in your classroom can help you reach students who may otherwise struggle.
In this video, Sarah Powell from UT demonstrates how to use explicit instruction in the classroom. This video is part of the Project STAIR, a resource for teachers and parents with students who are struggling with math. The project was originally made to help middle school math teachers, but explicit instruction is a tool that teachers at any grade (and in any subject) can use in their classroom.

In today's video, we look at 4 things that every math teacher should stop saying, as well as what to say instead.

1. Does anyone have any questions?
Instead - "What questions do you have?" or "I want to hear 3 different questiosn about this topic before moving on."

2. What's the answer to this problem?
Instead - "How did you approach this problem?" or "What's something you tried on this problem?"

3. That's correct. **
Instead - "Tell me what you did here and why." or "Convince me that this is the correct answer."

4. That's wrong. **
Instead - "I agree with everything up to this point."

**Those last two are things to try not to say as quickly or just say less.

I've also got a spreadsheet I put together a few years ago with a bunch more sentence / question stems if you're interested - https://docs.google.com/spread....sheets/d/1FunYgh1NO1

You have probably heard people say they are just bad at math, or perhaps you yourself feel like you are not โ€œa math person.โ€ Not so, says Stanford mathematics education professor Jo Boaler, who shares the brain research showing that with the right teaching and messages, we can all be good at math. Not only that, our brains operate differently when we believe in ourselves. Boaler gives hope to the the mathematically fearful or challenged, shows a pathway to success, and brings into question the very basics of how our teachers approach what should be a rewarding experience for all children and adults.

Jo Boaler is a professor of mathematics education at Stanford and the co-founder of YouCubed, which provides resources and ideas to inspire and excite students about mathematics. She is also the author of the first massive open online course on mathematics teaching and learning. Her book Experiencing School Mathematics won the Outstanding Book of the Year award for education in Britain. A recipient of a National Science Foundation "early career award"' she was recently named by BBC as one of the eight educators changing the face of education.

Instructional coaching can promote more effective and engaging learning in the classroom. In this video, Kirk Walters, AIR principal researcher and instructional math coach, shows how he supports teachers and helps students learn critical math skills. Walters, whose research primarily focuses on ways to improve K-12 math teaching, examines why itโ€™s important to teach students not only how to do mathematical procedures but also to understand the concepts behind them.

In this perspective-expanding and enjoyable talk, Dan Finkel invites us to approach learning and teaching math with courage, curiosity, and a sense of play.

Dan Finkel wants everyone to have fun with math. After completing his Ph.D. in algebraic geometry at the University of Washington, he decided that teaching math was the most important contribution he could make to the world. He has devoted much of his life to understanding and teaching the motivation, history, aesthetics, and deep structure of mathematics.

Dan is the Founder and Director of Operations of Math for Love, a Seattle-based organization devoted to transforming how math is taught and learned. A teacher of teachers and students, Dan works with schools, develops curriculum, leads teacher workshops, and gives talks on mathematics and education throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Dan is one of the creators of Prime Climb, the beautiful, colorful, mathematical board game. He contributes regularly to the New York Times Numberplay blog and hosts Seattleโ€™s Julia Robinson Math Festival annually. In his spare time he performs improv comedy in Seattle.
