A year ago, Ayat Husseini’s dreams of going away to college looked like they were evaporating. Her parents, an immigrant couple from Lebanon, had cultural objections and fears about her leaving her home in New York City. Joseph Williams, the technology director in California’s Perris Union High School District, demands fast responses to IT problems and insists on keeping close connections to teaching and learning by sitting in on lessons and coaching his colleagues. Williams oversees a $3.2 million technology budget that supports Chromebooks for all 10,700 students, has dramatically expanded opportunities for students and staff to learn computer science, and provides “maker spaces” for hands-on student building and creation.
“What I didn’t want to do was try to effect change by riding a desk,” Williams says. “I needed to be able to lead from the classroom.”

Thousands of teachers protested Monday in Oklahoma and Kentucky, demanding higher wages and more resources for students. So far this year, teachers in four states have walked out of classrooms or threatened to walk out to press for higher pay and more school spending. Education Week editor Liana Loewus talked with PBS NewsHour’s John Yang about what’s happening around the country.
A nationally representative Education Week survey shows rifts among teachers, principals, and superintendents on hot-button social issues affecting K-12 education. See what they think about immigration’s effect on the nation’s schools, their views on charter schools, vouchers, and LGBT rights—and who they voted for in the 2106 presidential election.
First lady Jill Biden welcomed the national and state teachers of the year to the White House on Thursday for the first state dinner of its kind.
While traditional state dinners honor visiting heads of state, this one recognized the award-winning teachers—including Missy Testerman, the 2024 National Teacher of the Year and an English-as-a-second-language teacher in Tennessee—for the work they do every day in the classroom. Teachers dressed in ball gowns and tuxes mingled with national leaders, including administration officials and members of Congress.

More than half of the educators who responded to a survey by the Education Week Research Center—51 percent—said that updating curriculum to get students ready for the jobs of the future is a top priority.

Paris Kent, the dance director at Bellaire High School in Houston, has sent her students into physics classes to help students learn about the rotation of an axis through the movement of their bodies, demonstrating how a person’s size impacts the speed of the rotation. It’s just one way Kent works to incorporate dance across the curriculum.
But the methods for utilizing movement are just as plentiful as the reasons for doing so—from giving students an opportunity to share elements of their culture, creating connections between students and their teachers, and increasing student engagement.
Here, Kent shares how teachers can incorporate dance and movement into their classrooms in small, time-effective ways.

As an EdWeek reporter, Evie Blad has explored issues concerning student mental health for years, including following tragic events like school shootings. Here, she argues that the pandemic has brought fresh attention to this issue. And that it will require a consistent and long-term plan to help schools provide the right kind of supports to their students. This is “a marathon, not a sprint,” she says, and policymakers play a key critical in helping schools address this growing concern.
As the director of technology for the Vail, Ariz. district, Mark Breen helps students and staff overcome their fears of technology and see its applications in their daily work -- a job he likens to that of an orchestra director, who helps all the instruments play harmoniously together. His work in the district includes introducing all students to computer science and coding, improving back-office HR functions, and using technology to improve how teachers get feedback on their work.
Indiana has one of the largest voucher programs in the country with over 34,000 students receiving tax dollars to pay for private schools. With the Trump administration favoring school choice, many wonder if vouchers help or hurt education. Lisa Stark reports.
