Meet our chess lesson for kids: How Queen Moves and Captures | Chess Lessons | Kids Academy

The strongest piece of chess is the queen. She is the strongest soldier in the team. Let’s see how queen moves and captures and find an easy way to learn chess.

How does it move?
A queen can move like a rook as well as a bishop which means that it can move the maximum number of squares on the board. It can move on diagonals, ranks, and files. It can move a total of 27 squares which means it can attack 27 squares in all directions.
If it moves sideways it means that it moved like a rook. If it moves on a diagonal, then it’s a bishop move.

How does it attack?
The queen can have multiple paths to reach to its enemy. It can either use the rook moves or the bishop moves to capture the enemy. It can either move on the ranks and reach to its target or it can move diagonally and capture the target.

These multiple movements make the queen the strongest pieces on the chess board, as much as the king. It is the strongest defender of the king and can save the king from many difficult situations. Since it can take such great leaps on the chess, its attack may come as a surprise to the opponent who did not pay much attention to where the queen was. So, beware of the queen.
