When students are learning about communities and community topics in 2nd and third grade, they go past the basic vocabulary they learned in kindergarten and 1st grade. They begin to dig deeper into community concepts, starting to learn how to differentiate between urban, suburban and rural communities. They’ll learn about what makes each of those communities unique—how homes in suburban communities often have amenities and people commuting, for example. Or, how urban areas like cities always seem to have something going on and how they differ from rural areas that are quieter and often spread out. Then the teacher will help them move outside of their home and neighborhood and into the world at large. They’ll delve into the concepts of social community, which is a group of people that they enjoy spending time with. Especially important with neighborhood for grade 2 concepts, children will learn how their local schools and parks and other common places are part both part of their neighborhoods and possibly their social communities.

At this age, children learn how to fit the small pieces of community into a larger, more global view. With the engaging pictures, they’ll see how home and school fit together into neighborhoods and communities that belong in their specific states. The clear and concise wording walks kids through their belonging to their state, country and continental communities as a citizen who belongs to many different communities, and teaches them vocabulary words like country and continent.

As citizens of the earth, the final worksheet reviewed in this communities compilation talks about recycling for kids, and how each citizen can make a difference in taking care of their communities. They’ll learn about what things can and can’t be recycled, as well as what happens to an item as it takes its trip to the recycling plant. They’ll even get to help their video friends sort items for recycling and watch them be transported away in an effort to keep their neighborhood community and their larger, global community and world in great shape.
