Ever since you had communities, you have had wealthy people who stand out above all others. At first prosperity was measured mostly in land and the amount of livestock you had.
But then as society developed, precious metals such as gold and silver became the popular way to gauge how wealthy a person really was.
Then with the widespread use of coins beginning in the 5th Century BC, business and trade really took off. Therefore, immense wealth could be both acquired and determined by how much money you possessed.
History is therefore full of interesting and ambitious people who have accumulated great fortunes in their own lifetime.
