Lyrics:
These are the doubles, one through twelve
We’re adding numbers to themselves
These are the doubles, one through twelve
We’re adding numbers to themselves
One plus one is two
Two plus two is four
Three plus three is six
Four plus four is eight
Time to concentrate
Four plus four is eight
Five plus five is ten, my friend
Six plus six is twelve
Seven and seven make fourteen
And eight plus eight is sixteen
Nine plus nine is eighteen
And ten and ten make twenty
Two elevens are twenty-two (twenty-two)
And twelve plus twelve is twenty-four
These are the doubles, one through twelve
We’re adding numbers to themselves
These are the doubles, one through twelve
We’re adding numbers to themselves

Title: Learn to subtract 1-digit numbers from twenty with regrouping.
You can already subtract a one-digit number from ten.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to subtract a 1-digit number from 20, which is 2 tens.
Here's an example. 20 minus 3.
Twenty is 2 tens.
We start subtracting in the ones place.
We can't subtract 3 from 0, so we have to take a ten from 20 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 2 in 20 to show we took a ten and we put a 1 here to show we have 1 ten left in the tens place.
We put a 1 here to show that we made ten ones.
Now we subtract 3 from the 10 ones.
10 minus 3 is 7.
In the tens place there's nothing to subtract, so we bring down the 1.
That gives us 17.
So 20 minus 3 is 17.
Another example. 20 minus 8.
Twenty is 2 tens.
We start subtracting in the ones place.
We can't subtract 8 from 0, so we have to take a ten from 20 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 2 in 20 to show we took a ten and we write a 1 above it to show we have one ten left.
We show that we made ten ones by putting a 1 here.
Now we subtract 8 from the 10 ones.
10 minus 8 is 2.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 1 we have left.
That gives us 12.
So 20 minus 8 is 12.
Last example. 20 minus 4.
We start with the ones place.
We can't subtract 4 from 0, so we have to take a ten from 20 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 2 in 20 to show we took a ten.
And we write 1 here to show there is 1 ten left, which is 10.
We put a 1 here to show that we made ten ones.
Now we subtract 4 from 10.
10 minus 4 is 6.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 1 we have left.
That gives us 16.
So 20 minus 4 is 16.
In the rest of this lesson, you'll work problems like these. You can use these boxes if you want, but you don't have to.

Learn subtraction facts with the make-a-ten strategy: subtracting 9, part 3. Free practice at http://[a]www.ilearn.com%2Ffacts[/a]
iLearn provides the easiest and quickest way to learn the make-a-ten strategy that works for all addition and subtraction facts with sums or minuends greater than 10. Without this strategy, these are the hardest facts to learn. With this strategy, they become very easy. Because the strategy is based on the fundamental principle of place value, students have far less difficulty understanding place value later when they learn to add and subtract numbers with 2 or more digits.

We need one more here to make 10 so we click here to add it.
Now we have 10 and we need 13 in all.
13 is 3 more than 10 so we add 3 more here.
1 and 3 is 4 so we added 4 more in all.
10 and 3 makes 13 so 9 and 4 also makes 13.
13 is 4 more than 9 so we put 4 in the answer box.
9 plus what number equals 17?
To find the number we need, we start with the number we know, so we start with 9.
We need one more here to make 10 so we click here to add it.
Now we have 10 and we need 17 in all.
17 is 7 more than 10 so we add 7 more here.
1 and 7 is 8 so we added 8 more in all.
10 and 7 makes 17 so 9 and 8 also makes 17.
