Presenter: Kristine Kelly
Academic vocabulary is a key part of the CCRS English Language Arts shift of complexity. But beyond the CCRS, academic language in general and academic vocabulary specifically have broad implications for our students’ lives. Academic vocabulary isn’t just for higher education; it’s another tool for our students to learn and use in order to understand texts; oral & written directions; communicate precise ideas when speaking or writing; comprehend language of assessments in the classroom and the workplace; describe thinking and problem-solving; participate more fully in social, community, academic, and work-related settings; and develop greater fluency in English. Join me to explore what academic vocabulary is, where to find tools to identify it and how to decide which words to teach and how to teach them, whether through conversation–at lower levels–or more explicitly at intermediate and higher levels. Leave with concrete ideas for teaching and tools that will save you time!

Hey kids! Grab your K12 Classic Reader if you have it and follow along with this video. Pretend I'm your learning coach asking you all of the questions in the Literature and Comprehension Lesson Guide and try answering them on your own as you would with your own learning coach. Just remember to pause the video after every question I ask to think of your own response, and then you can play the video back on again to see if your responses matched up with mine. Once you've completed watching the entire video you can mark the lesson complete or ask your learning coach to do so. Thank you so much for joining me today for your Literature and Comprehension class. See you in my next video!

For learning coaches:

This lesson introduces the story "Little Pine Tree and Its Needles" in the K12 Classic Reader and includes a lesson on sequence as provided by the learning coaches' Language Arts/Literature and Comprehension Lesson Guide.
