Place Value for 2nd Grade | Trading Tens for Hundreds
Kids are introduced to the concept of place value in the second grade. Place value for kids is a very important core concept of mathematics. Once kids clearly understand the place value it becomes easier for them to move to the more complex arithmetic problems. But it is important to make learning place value for kids into a fun activity.
Before starting to teach them about trading tens for hundreds, you should determine if they have the concept of place value clear. First, check if they know how to trade ones for tens. Once they have a good concept of the base then it will get easier to teach them trading tens for hundred.
Here are a few steps on teaching trading tens to kids.
1. Recall Previous Knowledge
Ask the students what they know about place value. Then give them some examples and simple place value questions of ones and tens. Write “78” on the whiteboard and ask the kids to identify the tens place and the one's place.
Once you are sure that the kids have a clear concept of ones and tens, move to the next step.
2. Distribute the Poker Chips
If you had used poker chips to teach the ones and tens then use the same chips again to teach trading tens for hundreds. Tell the kids that the white are ones, the blues are tens and the red are hundreds. Ask the students to trade ten white ones for one blue chip.
3. Trading Tens for Hundreds
Tell the students how to count ten blue chips like 10, 20, 30, 40,.., 90. Now tell them how to trade ten blue ones for one red one.
4. Start A Game
Once they get the concept of a hundred than start playing with the chips and ask questions like how to change the hundred into 200, 300 and so on.
Also, incorporate base ten games and number boards into your games to teach place value for kids. These games are more effective in teaching place value to kids than a simple whiteboard demonstration.

US Cities and States | Learn the geographic regions of the USA | Kids Academy

When the kid has learned the regions of USA, now they can move to learn the US cities and states. For this the kid would need some extra time, so don’t put pressure on him and let him learn in his own time.
Now for the lesson, you need to keep things simple and easy. There are 50 states the USA. Each state is then further divided into cities. So, if you know the state you can easily find the city. So now you need to prepare a worksheet of states and their cities.
The kid can match each city to the state that it belongs to.
For example, Dallas is located in Texas. Dallas is famous for its cowboy hats. Los Angeles is in the state of California. New York city where you see the statue of liberty is in the state of New York.

Kids Academy once again delivers a delightful and educational video that will instruct toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten students on the color green.
When children learn colors, they build their vocabulary and this allows for better expression and communication through their oral language. There are other important reasons to learn colors for kids, such as building a foundation for children to be able to sort and classify with color as an attribute.
The video begins with their familiar elephant character drawing clouds and sun on a barren background. The elephant then draws a tree but it is without any color. Elephant then looks around and a dapper little leprechaun appears on the scene. He waves his green magic wand and the grass is now green. Children viewing the video are asked, “What color is the grass?”
The color word GREEN is shown and the voiceover answers the question.
But the clever leprechaun is not done! In this video, viewers will learn colors for kids by watching what the leprechaun does next. Children and students will learn the color green when the leprechaun waves his wand and then green leaves appear on the tree. A green frog appears and the children are asked what color the frog and then the children are asked the color of the leprechaun’s hat.
Each time the leprechaun works his magic, the children are asked what color the object is and the color word Green appears with the voice-over saying, “GREEN!” At the end of the video, the elephant and leprechaun walk together, turning the landscape green.
The color green concept is reviewed at the conclusion of the video when all the green objects appear on the screen and the color word GREEN is shown again. Children learn colors by being shown examples of objects that are familiar to them and being instructed on the color name. This video does this simple but effective method of instruction to learn colors and young children will learn color green in a fun and interesting way.

Uppercase Letters - Learn the Alphabet | Kids Academy
Teaching alphabets sound easy but in reality, it’s one daunting task to decide what to teach the kids and where to start from. Especially when it comes to the uppercase and lowercase alphabets, the teachers themselves can get very confused about what to teach first. It’s not only the written alphabets that you have to teach to the children, in fact, you even have to teach the sounds. Sorting and counting are one of the most basic and most important lessons of kindergarten academics. It is important that kids have a sound understanding of objects and where do they belong.
The kid’s minds are empty when they come into this world, so eventually, they will start sorting things out on their own, but it is the responsibility of teachers and parents that they make sure that the kids have named these categories right.
So how can you help the kid with sorting and counting lessons? Let me explain it to you in some simple words and some easy steps.
1. Sorting based on color
This is the easiest kind of sorting that you can teach to kid and this is the fastest kind that the kid can understand. Colors fascinate kids and they can easily differentiate between colors. All you need to do is to help the kid put names on these colors. And they can easily put the same colored objects in one group.
2. Sorting based on size
Size is another very easy feature that the kid can differentiate between. So just collect a few objects of different sizes and ask the kid to put objects of the same size in one group. The kid might take some time and may make some mistakes in the beginning however he/she will eventually get the concept.
3. Sorting based on the shape
Start with circle, square and triangle. These are the most common shapes. Having a prior understanding of shapes will help the kid in school to have a head start on the shapes chapter. All you need to do is to collect some of the common objects from your house, and then help your kid sort them according to their shape. As he sorts tell the name of the shape so that the kid can put names on the categories.
As the kid has sorted the objects do a little counting lesson of the number of object in each group of objects. So, in this way you can teach two lessons to the kid in one lecture.
