This kissing couple is one of the best loved paintings in history, but what do we really know about it? Let's learn about its creator (Gustav Klimt), the historical moment it sprang from (turn-of-the-century Austria), and what it means when we look at it today (dubious consent?).

For much of human history, people made art by trying to represent the world as it appeared around them. Until about 100 years ago, when a bunch of artists stopped trying to do that. It was shocking then and it still upsets and confounds today. How are we supposed to deal with art completely removed from recognizable objects? And why should we? This is the case for Abstraction.

Pre-order our book YOU ARE AN ARTIST (which includes new assignments!) here: http://bit.ly/2kplj2h So you look at a work of art and think to yourself, I could have done that. And maybe you really could have, but the issue here is more complex than that -- why didn't you? Why did the artist? And why does it have an audience? We delve into it by looking at work by artists like Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Piet Mondrian, and Cy Twombly, among others. You might find it’s not quite as simple as you think.

We sit down with artist Desirée Holman to talk about her current project, Sophont, which explores ideas of science fiction, aliens, new-age ideology, mysticism, and tech culture. Her assignment asks you to become a science fiction character by creating and wearing some kind of psionics hardware that enhances your character's abilities.
Sarah Green was able to connect this assignment with art history through Rebecca Horn, who created "body sculptures" as she was sick in a hospital with lung poisoning.
INSTRUCTIONS - Become a Sci-Fi Character
1. Become a science fiction character who wears some sort of psionics hardware that enables this character to enhance their extra sensory abilities in some way
2. Upload your assignment using #theartassignment
3. Fame and glory (your work might be in a future episode)
