What Is a Noun?
Grammarly
Grammarly
GRAMMAR
Nouns are everywhere in our writing. But what are all the types of nouns you come across, and how do you use them?
What is a noun?
A noun is a word that names something, such as a person, place, thing, or idea.
Types of nouns
Nouns form a large proportion of English vocabulary and they come in a wide variety of types. Nouns can name a person:
Albert Einstein
the president
my mother
a girl
Nouns can also name a place:
Mount Vesuvius
Disneyland
my bedroom
Nouns can also name things, although sometimes they might be intangible things, such as concepts, activities, or processes. Some might even be hypothetical or imaginary things.
shoe
faucet
freedom
The Elder Wand
basketball
Proper nouns vs. common nouns
One important distinction to be made is whether a noun is a proper noun or a common noun. A proper noun is a specific name of a person, place, or thing, and is always capitalized.
Does Tina have much homework to do this evening?
Tina is the name of a specific person.
I would like to visit Old Faithful.
Old Faithful is the specific name of a geological phenomenon.
The opposite of a proper noun is a common noun, sometimes known as a generic noun. A common noun is the generic name of an item in a class or group and is not capitalized unless appearing at the beginning of a sentence or in a title.
The girl crossed the river.
Girl is a common noun; we do not learn the identity of the girl by reading this sentence, though we know the action she takes. River is also a common noun in this sentence.
A concrete noun is something that is perceived by the senses; something that is physical or real.
I heard the doorbell.
My keyboard is sticky.
Doorbell and keyboard are real things that can be sensed.
Conversely, an abstract noun is something that cannot be perceived by the senses.
We canโt imagine the courage it took to do that.
Courage is an abstract noun. Courage canโt be seen, heard, or sensed in any other way, but we know it exists.
A collective noun denotes a group or collection of people or things.
That pack of lies is disgraceful.
Pack of lies as used here is a collective noun. Collective nouns take a singular verb as if they are one entity โ in this case, the singular verb is.
Plural nouns
Plural nouns, unlike collective nouns, require plural verbs. Many English plural nouns can be formed by adding -s or -es to the singular form, although there are many exceptions.
catโcats
These two cats are both black.
Note the plural verb are.
taxโtaxes
houseโhouses
Countable nouns vs. uncountable nouns
Countable nouns are nouns which can be counted, even if the number might be extraordinarily high (like counting all the people in the world). Countable nouns can be used with a/an, the, some, any, a few, and many.
Here is a cat.
Cat is singular andโobviouslyโcountable.
Here are a few cats.
Here are some cats.
Uncountable nouns are nouns that come in a state or quantity which is impossible to count; liquids are uncountable, as are things that act like liquids (sand, air). They are always considered to be singular, and can be used with some, any, a little, and much.
An I.Q. test measures intelligence.
Intelligence is an uncountable noun.
Students donโt seem to have much homework these days.
A pride of lions roamed the savanna.
Pride of lions is also a collective noun.

What Is a Noun?
A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Concrete nouns name people, places, or things that you can touch, see, hear, smell, or taste. Abstract nouns name ideas, concepts, or emotions. These nouns are intangible, which means you cannot touch, see, hear, smell, or taste them using your five senses.

Why don't you have your child try it? The first lesson is FREE!
Go to https://bit.ly/31Vx5nq to book your free Spanish lesson with Spanish tutors with Overcome the Barrier.
When K-12 students study foreign languages, the content mostly focuses on grammar, memorizing vocabulary, reading and writing. And those are all important elements to language learning.
But is this truly the most efficient and engaging method for your child to learn a foreign language?
I would argue that the answer is a definite No, just by looking at the current situation. How come after 2-6 years spent learning Spanish in school, most students, by the time they graduate, canโt even say how their day is going in Spanish?
Perhaps you think that itโs unrealistic to expect a 17-year old to be fluent in Spanish.
And you may be right, in the context that languages are currently being taught. In a regular classroom, there is one teacher for 30 students. So how can we possibly expect each student to be exposed to that one-on-one interaction in a foreign language, which is a key element to learning that language? This is impossible to do with that many students.
Homeschooling parents may be one step ahead of the game, except that Spanish may not be your native language.
So thatโs where Overcome the Barrier comes in. We bring that 1-1 live interaction in Spanish with native speakers right to your childโs laptop.
Weโve developed a curriculum for our teachers to follow, which will take your child from 0 all the way to become fluent in Spanish.
Whatโs more, after each lesson, the platform creates personalized homework for your child based on the mistakes that he made during class.
Now I would argue that this is the summit of personalized education in the field of foreign languages.
So what are you waiting for? Sign up your child for a free 30 min demo and have them experience the power of 1 -1 Spanish immersion with native speaking tutors.
Learning Spanish through 1:1 Spanish classes with Overcome the Barrier is the most authentic and efficient way to learn Spanish, because you learn directly from YOUR MISTAKES with NATIVE SPEAKERS.
The first lesson is FREE, and then the price is only $6 /45 min lesson. Go to https://https://bit.ly/31Vx5nq to book your free Spanish lesson, or visit us at www.octb.us

This video is about the education system of the UK.
The United Kingdom has a highly centralized education system, which is divided into four main stages: primary, secondary, further and higher education.
Primary education starts at the age of five and lasts for seven years. All children must attend primary school, which is free of charge. The majority of primary schools are controlled by the local authority, although there are also a number of academies and free schools.
Secondary education lasts for five years, from the age of eleven. Again, all children must attend secondary school, which is also free of charge. Secondary schools can be either academies, free schools, grammar schools or comprehensive schools.
Further education generally refers to colleges and sixth forms, which offer a range of academic and vocational qualifications. Further education is not compulsory, but many young people choose to attend a college or sixth form after completing their GCSEs.
Higher education generally refers to universities, which offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
