The Fascinating World of Fungi. Get yourself 20% off a Brilliant premium subscription here: https://brilliant.org/dos/
In this map of fungi we learn everything we can about fungi in about 20 minutes. They are hugely underappreciated as they are an entire kingdom of life, as rich as plants and animals, and we use them so much in our day to day lives beyond eating their mushrooms. They are really important for medicine (antibiotics, statins and many more) and nearly all plants on Earth rely on fungi to live. Amazing stuff. I learned so much making this video!

🌴Patrol the jungle with the Simple History Vietnam uniform🌴
Our last new design for the holiday season! Get it here: https://teespring.com/vietnam-soldier-sh

So, as an act of rebellion, many of the young US soldiers started to decorate the camouflaged cloth covering of their metal helmets.

At first it was with simple things like the name of their girlfriend or their favourite music band
But as the war progressed, slogans, symbols and doodles started to appear on the troop’s helmets; with many protesting against the war itself.

Dihydrogen monoxide (better known as water) is the key to nearly everything. It falls from the sky, makes up 60% of our bodies, and just about every chemical process related to life takes place with it or in it. Without it, none of the chemical reactions that keep us alive would happen - none of the reactions that sustain any life form on earth would happen - and the majority of inorganic chemical reactions that shape the surface of the earth would not happen either. Every one of us uses water for all kinds of chemistry every day - our body chemistry, our food chemistry, and our laundry chemistry all take place in water.

In today's Crash Course Chemistry, we use Hank's actual dirty laundry (ew) to learn about some of the properties of water that make it so special - its polarity and dielectric property; how electrolytes can be used to classify solutions; and we discover how to calculate a solution's molarity as well as how to dilute a solution using the dilution equation.

How did we come up with our system of telling time? Why do we divide the day into 24 hours of 60 minutes each, and put 60 seconds in each minute? Where does the definition of a second come from? And who decides what clock shows the correct time? There’s clearly a lot of questions when it comes to time.

Why does shaken soda explode? Does ice melt first in fresh or salt water?
Thank you Squarespace for sponsoring this video. Go to https://squarespace.com to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code: VERITASIUM

This video features experiments that have been shown to me by science teachers over the years. Does ice melt fast in salt water or fresh water was an experiment introduced to me at the Utah Science Teachers' conference. The ring of metal over a chain demo came from a teachers event in Florida. The idea shaking a carbonated drink increases pressure came from an email.

Special thanks to Petr Lebedev for building the pressure gauge.

👉 Convert text to video with AI here - https://veed.video/3T53vr8

What if you could automatically generate a script and convert it into a complete video... without recording anything? Well, today, with the help of VEED's AI tools, you can convert text to video in minutes! 🚀

To create a video from scratch with AI, what better way to start than with an AI video script generator? Type out the video idea in 1-2 sentences, pick a vibe and format, and let the magic happen. In a few seconds, you'll have a full-blown video script you can use to create a video! 📝

Next, we'll convert this video script text into a video. After generating a video script with VEED, a button appears in which you can open VEED's built-in video editor. Within this editor, you can instantly turn the turn into a video, in a few clicks.

We start off by converting the video script text to audio, which will be AI text to speech. We simply copy and paste the text of the script into the text to speech menu, in which you can also select a language and AI voice by choice. A text to speech fragment is finalized when it's added to the project sequence. 🔉

Then, we automatically turn the text to speech fragment(s) to subtitles. In just a few clicks, you converted the TTS audio to subtitles, which you can fully customize to make your subtitles stand out. 🤩

Finally, you'll be able to add audio and video stock footage to your video to complete the process. In a few clicks, you can search and select relevant footage that compliment the narrative of the video, which you can instantly add to the video project.

So, in moments, you can convert text to video from start to finish with the help of AI! Try it for yourself through the link above. 🎉

Enjoy and good luck! 🍀

In a world of distractions, how do we pay attention?

It seems like every week someone tells us how the internet and the digital age are overloading our brains. Sure, sometimes it feels like we're being fed more information than we can handle, that we're paying attention to the wrong things. Are we giving our brain a fair shot?

I explore some science that show how paying attention can be a bad thing, and then some science about how paying attention can be a very helpful thing

In which John Green teaches you about the life and death of one of history's great explorers, Captain James Cook of the British Navy. He charted large swaths of the Pacific ocean, laid claim to Australia and New Zealand, and died a bizarre death in the Sandwich Islands, which are now called the Hawaiian Islands. Exactly how and why Captain Cook was killed in Hawaii is a long-running historical debate. John presents two interpretations of the event and talks about what the differing interpretations say about history. It turns out how the story is told depends on who is doing the storytelling, and people from different backgrounds can interpret events in very different ways. Also, there is a celebration and a mustache involved in this episode, so you definitely don't want to miss it.

Ocean stratification results when ocean water with different densities forms layers due to their properties. In this video, I show how differences in salinity can create ocean stratification which may result in ocean currents.
In the salinity demonstration, I have a container divided into two halves. On one side I have fresh water and the other I have very salty water. The two types of water are separated by a divider. When I lift the divider the salty water flows under the warm water and creates a current.
