I took a boat through 96 million black plastic balls on the Los Angeles reservoir to find out why they're there. The first time I heard about shade balls the claim was they reduce evaporation. But it turns out this isn't the reason they were introduced.

Huge thanks to LADWP for arranging this special tour for me. Next time let's put the GoPro on the submersible!

The balls are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) which is less dense than water so they float on the surface of the reservoir even if they break apart. They are 10cm (4 inches) in diameter and contain about 210ml of water. So the main reason they are on the reservoir is to block sunlight from entering the water and triggering a chemical reaction that turns harmless bromide into carcinogenic bromate. This effect occurs with prolonged exposure to bromate so regulators insist that levels be kept below 10 microgram per liter on average over a 12 month period.

Ever wonder why certain stars are certain colors? And what color is our sun, really? If we looked at enough stars, could we figure out the average color of the universe?

It's Thanksgiving time (Thanksgiving time)
It's Thanksgiving time (Thanksgiving time)
It's Thanksgiving time (Thanksgiving time)
It's Thanksgiving time

We can all feel thankful
Flap your wings like a turkey
Flap your wings like a turkey
Flap your wings like a turkey
Flap your wings like a turkey

It's our Thanksgiving dance
Everybody take your hands
Now we're gonna put 'em both together
To say thank you

On Thanksgiving we are feeling grateful
We might eat stuffing or sweet potatoes
Or eat cranberry sauce or might have some turkey
Broccoli and salad that's enough to get dessert

On Thanksgiving we are feeling thankful
Thankful for the food we are so grateful
Thankful for our health thankful for our friends
Thankful for our family our thankfulness will never ever end

It's Thanksgiving time (Thanksgiving time)
It's Thanksgiving time (Thanksgiving time)
It's Thanksgiving time (Thanksgiving time)

What is the difference between bacteria and viruses? In Bacteria and Viruses for Kids, you will learn all about these two microorganisms. The first thing you will learn is that not all bacteria are bad. In fact, the majority of bacteria on the planet and in your body are actually good. You can find bacteria in things like yogurt, soy sauce, and pickles!

So what are bacteria? They are single-celled organisms so small that you can't see them without a microscope. They don't have a nucleus like other single-celled Common shapes include rods, spirals, and spheres. All these organisms move in different ways too. Some move like swimmers using tail-like structures called flagella. Others stay still and don't move much at all. Then there are some that slither or slide their way around.

Most bacteria are not harmful. However, there are some that can make you sick. These are called pathogens. Common pathogens include food poisoning, leprosy, and typhoid fever. To fight these pathogens, you can use antibiotics or antiseptics. You can actually find antiseptics in soaps because it's how you keep your hands clean. Good bacteria, on the other hand, are good for many reasons. They help you digest food and keep your immune system strong. They also break down dead plant and animal material to help keep soil healthy. And, they produce about half of the oxygen in the atmosphere!

What about viruses? All viruses are bad. Scientists debate whether these organisms are living or dead because they don't have an organized cell structure and can't reproduce unless they attach themselves to a living cell. The word virus comes from the Latin word for "slimy liquid." These organisms attack healthy cells. As those cells reproduce, the virus reproduces too and spreads. Many kinds can pass from person to person through hand-shaking, food contact, and through water.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about bacteria and viruses! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about germs, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Einstein's classic thought experiment involves sitting on a train travelling at the speed of light. If you hold a mirror in front of your face, will you see your reflection in a mirror? How could light from your face reach the mirror if the mirror is travelling away from you? But it would be a pretty spooky train if you couldn't see your reflection so Einstein felt this solution wasn't realistic. On the other hand if you could see your reflection, it would mean light was travelling at the speed of light inside the train. But that meant the same light observed from outside the train would be going twice the speed of light. This again seems inconsistent. So Einstein resolved that you must see your reflection but that light must travel at the same speed inside and outside the train. The only way this is possible is if space and time are perceived differently by observers inside and outside the train.

You are cells. Your muscles, organs, skin and hair. They are in your blood and in your bones.
Cells are biological robots. They don’t want anything, they don’t feel anything. They are never sad or happy. They just are, right here, right now. They are as conscious as a stone or a chair or a neutron star. Cells just follow their programming that has been evolving and changing for billions of years, molded by natural selection.
They are impossible machines and yet, here they are, driven entirely by the fundamental forces of the universe. The smallest unit of life, right at the border where physics becomes biology.
Sometimes, to get a truer understanding of how amazing something is, you need to hold your breath and dive in really deep. So, what are cells and how do they work?

Hidden in the microverse all around you, there is a merciless war being fought by the true rulers of this planet, microorganisms. Amoebae, protists, bacteria, archaea and fungi compete for resources and space. And then there are the strange horrors that are viruses, hunting everyone else. Not even being alive, they are the tiniest, most abundant and deadliest beings on earth, killing trillions every day. Not interested in resources, only in living things to take over. Or so we thought.
It turns out that there are giant viruses that blur the line between life and death – and other viruses hunting them.
