Germs are everywhere. They are often responsible for making people sick. They're so small, you can only see them with a microscope. In Germs for Kids, you and will learn all about the four types of germs that exist in the word: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Let's see what you already know and what you will learn throughout the video!

The first type is bacteria. Bacteria are single-celled organisms that live inside and outside of you body. They can cause ear infections, sore throats, cavities, and more. Not all bacteria are bad, though. In fact, there is lots of good bacteria in some of the food we eat, and our bodies need good germs to help use up the nutrients we ingest. Doctors even use good bacteria to create medicines and vaccines.

Viruses, on the other hand, are all bad. Some examples include chicken pox, the flu, and the measles. Viruses like to invade healthy cells and multiply as the host cell multiplies. Because our bodies have so many cells, there are lots of places for viruses to invade. When we get sick from a virus, we can get what's called a vaccine or immunization to help fight it.

The next type of germ is fungi. A fungus is like a plant and actually consists of many cells rather than just one. Fungi like to live in warm and wet places, such as between a person’s toes. Many fungi don’t cause problems for healthy people. Examples include athlete’s foot, skin infections, and other rashes. Some fungal infections are contagious and can pass from one person to another.

The last type of germ is a protozoa. Like fungi, protozoa live in wet places. And like bacteria and viruses, they also have only one cell. Many live in the water, which is how they spread diseases and infections. Water that is not safe to drink may contain protozoa. These germs can lead to stomach aches, diarrhea, and nausea. Do you know what an abbreviation is or how to make one? An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase. You can make one by taking letters out and replacing them with other letters or symbols, such as a period. In this video, you and your kids will learn about some common abbreviations, many of which you probably use every day.

One of the most common abbreviations has to do with the time of day. We use a.m. in the morning hours and p.m. in the evening and night hours. What do those actually stand for? "Ante meridiem" is Latin for before noon, so we use a.m. for all the times before noon. "Post meridiem" is Latin for after noon, so we use p.m. for all the times after noon.

Other common abbreviations involve days of the week, months of the year, measurement, and time. For example, we can write Sat. for Saturday or Dec. for December rather than writing out the whole word. In recipe books, you will often find abbreviations for their measurements, like tsp for teaspoon or oz for ounce. And you've probably seen abbreviations like min for minutes or yr for year.

Have you ever wondered why there are no dinosaurs anymore? In Extinction for Kids, you will learn why dinosaurs no longer roam the planet. You will also learn about some other species that likewise died off. Believe it or not, plants can become extinct too, and the process happens more quickly than it does for animals.

Most of the time, extinction happens over a long period of time. When certain animals can no longer reproduce, they begin to die off. Or when animals can't adapt to their changing environment, this can also lead them to extinction. In cases of mass extinction, many species of plants and animals die out very quickly. Many scientists believe that this is what happened to the dinosaurs and other plants and animals that were on the planet millions of years ago. An asteroid may have collided with the surface of the earth and caused these species to die.

Humans can also contribute to the possibility of extinction for various species through things like overhunting, destroying habitats, or introducing nonnative species to areas where they are not usually found. In fact, have you ever heard of the dodo bird? When animals like pigs and cats were introduced to the dodo bird's environment, the bird became prey to the pigs and cats. As a result, they eventually became extinct because they could not adapt quickly enough to survive.

What is your favorite season in the year? The Four Seasons for Kids explores why we have these distinct periods throughout the year. You will learn a lot about spring, summer, fall, and winter. Did you know that the seasons depend on the rotation of the earth around the sun? Believe it or not, your location plays a part in the weather you experience outside.

As the earth rotates around the sun, different parts of the planet face the sun. For half the year, the Northern Hemisphere is leaning toward the sun, making the months warmer. During the other half, the Souther Hemisphere leans toward the sun. That means that when it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it's winter in the Southern Hemisphere! If you live in the United State and have a friend who lives in Australia, your winter is their summer and vice versa.

During the spring, flowers and plants bloom or blossom. In most parts of the United States, this season occurs during March, April, and May. Summer is next and occurs during June, July, and August. The temperatures warm up even more, sometimes getting very hot! In the fall, the weather starts to cool down, and the leaves of many trees change colors.

A lot of people refer to fall as autumn. During autumn, animals start to gather food to prepare for the winter months. And this is period is also when farmers harvest their crops. Fall happens from September to November, which leaves December through February for winter! Winter brings the coldest weather, but there are lots of fun activities to do outside during the winter, such as skiing and ice skating.

Not all places experience the four seasons. Some places, such as the North and South Poles, always face away from the sun, making them cold year around. Similarly, places closest to the Equator are always facing the sun, making them warm year around. You might live somewhere that doesn't change very much or seem to have distinct weather changes from season to season. But you probably still feel a little cooler in winter and warmer in summer, even if the changes aren't very drastic.

What weighs about three pounds, uses electrical impulses, and stores unlimited amounts of information or data? Your brain! In this video for kids, you will learn a lot more about this fascinating organ of the human body that is almost like a computer. As the main part of the central nervous system, the brain has lot of important functions. This video will teach you about six parts of the brain and what they do.

The cerebrum is the biggest part of the brain. It makes up about 85% of the brain's weight. It allows us to control voluntary muscles so they can do things like kick a ball, walk down the street, or jump in the air. It also allows us to think. We depend on this important part of the brain when it comes to remembering things as well.

The brain stem, which connects the brain to the spinal cord, is responsible for things like breathing, digesting food, and circulating blood throughout the body. It controls involuntary muscles, which are the muscles that work on their own. For instance, the brain stem tells the heart to pump blood or the stomach muscles to break food down. It is below the cerebrum and in front of the cerebellum. Speaking of the cerebellum, this part of the brain controls balance, movement, and coordination. Without it, you would have trouble moving around.

The other three parts are the pituitary gland, the hypothalamus, and the amygdala. The pituitary gland controls how the body grows by producing and releasing hormones. Without it, you would never grow as you age. The hypothalamus controls the temperature of your body. When it's hot, it tells your body to sweat, and it tells your body to shiver when it's cold. And the amygdala is like the control center for feelings and is responsible for your emotions.

What exactly are vitamins and minerals? Many people think these two substances are the same, but they are not. But they are both important to keep our bodies strong and healthy. Vitamins are organic substances, meaning that plants and animals produce them. Minerals are inorganic and come from the soil and water. Then they are absorbed by plants or eaten by animals.

Vitamins are divided into two categories—fat soluble or water soluble. Which category a vitamin falls into depends on whether it dissolves best in fats or in water. The fat-soluble vitamins can be stored in the body, but the water-soluble vitamins need to dissolve in water before the body can absorb them. In addition, the body can’t store water-soluble vitamins. For this reason, we need a fresh supply of water-soluble vitamins each day.

When it comes to minerals, our bodies cannot break down or change them. Minerals can, however, form part of the structure of bones, teeth, nails, muscles, and red blood cells. There are several minerals the body needs. Calcium is one of the most common minerals. Our bodies need calcium to build and protect bones and teeth, support our muscles, and help with blood clots and nerves.

Part of becoming financially literate is understanding how to calculate interest. In this video, your kids or students will learn what exactly interest is and how they can calculate it. Interest is an amount of money that you either pay or earn. Whether you pay or earn depends on the situation. If you borrow money, you have to pay interest. There are a few terms you should be familiar with. The principal is the amount of money you start with that you are borrowing or spending. Another term to know is rate. The rate is the percentage you are charged (if borrowing money from a bank/company) or paid (if saving money in a bank). You will be able to use the rate and principal to determine the interest using an equation: Interest = Principal x Rate x Time (years).

The video goes through a helpful example scenario to walk you through calculating interest when saving money at a bank. In this case, Frankie Finance is starting with $200. The rate will be 0.15. Based on the equation, Frankie will earn $30 dollars per year in interest. Next, you can follow another scenario in which Frankie borrows money and owes $30 extra a year! The equation is the same regardless of whether or not you're borrowing or saving.

As we discussed in the introduction video to this series, making a budget to balance your finances is a great way to ensure you have money for the things you want. Financial Literacy—Making a Budget explains how to create a budget based on your income and expenses. This will help your kids learn how to use a spending plan in order to use their money wisely.

Budgeting is a great skill to have that will help you learn how to save for something you want to buy. A budget is a spending plan to based on your income and expenses. In other words, it estimates how much money your earn and spend over time. Expenses can be either fixed or variable. Fixed expenses are the same every time you have to pay them. Variable expenses, well, vary.

To make a budget, you have to look are how much money your earn or receive as gifts (income). Then you look at your expenses. Subtracting your expenses from your income gives you the amount of money you have left over to spend on something you want. You must be careful to watch out for unexpected expenses though, which can put a dent in that budge of yours!
