Linear Algebra on Khan Academy: Have you ever wondered what the difference is between speed and velocity? Ever try to visualize in four dimensions or six or seven? Linear algebra describes things in two dimensions, but many of the concepts can be extended into three, four or more. Linear algebra implies two dimensional reasoning, however, the concepts covered in linear algebra provide the basis for multi-dimensional representations of mathematical reasoning. Matrices, vectors, vector spaces, transformations, eigenvectors/values all help us to visualize and understand multi dimensional concepts. This is an advanced course normally taken by science or engineering majors after taking at least two semesters of calculus (although calculus really isn't a prereq) so don't confuse this with regular high school algebra.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything

What Is an Asteroid? | Asteroids for kids | Learn all about asteroids
What Is an Asteroid? | Asteroids for kids | Learn all about asteroids Teacherflix 7 Views • 2 years ago

What is the difference between a comet, a meteor, and an asteroid? In this video, you and your kids will learn specifically about asteroids. Sometimes when you look at the night sky, you will see lots of lights in the sky. But not all of those shiny spots are starts. A few of them are planets. And a couple of them are actually asteroids!

Asteroids can be as small as a speck of dust, and they can be hundreds of miles in diameter! They are made of mostly rock, but they might contain clay or silicon, or even metal. Those metals are usually nickel or iron, but some asteroids contain precious metals like gold and platinum.

The asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter contains most of the asteroids in our solar system. There are around a million asteroids that are over half a mile long! And there are millions more that are smaller. Ceres is the biggest asteroid in the belt, maybe even the solar system. It is so big that scientists consider it a dwarf planet! While most asteroids can't be seen from Earth, Vesta can be. Vesta is the second largest asteroid in the belt, but it is the brightest one in the sky. If it's in the right position, you can see it with the naked eye!

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about asteroids! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about asteroids, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

ASL What Is Kwanzaa?
ASL What Is Kwanzaa? Teacherflix 9 Views • 2 years ago

If you have ever asked "What is Kwanzaa?" or "How is Kwanzaa celebrated?" then this is the video for you! In this video about Kwanzaa for kids we explore the celebrations and traditions of Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is a wonderful holiday celebration that starts on December 26th and runs to January 1st.

Throughout the video we take a look at and explain the 7 symbols of Kwanzaa, which are:
1. Kikombe Cha Umoja - The unity cup.
2. Kinara - The candle holder that holds 7 candles.
3. Mazao - Fruits, nuts, and vegetables.
4. Mishumaa Saba - the seven candles of kwanzaa.
5. Mkeka - a Place Mat
6. Vibunzi - an Ear of Corn
7. Zawadi - gifts given on January 1st.

Watch the video to learn the actions that are associated with each of the symbols.

We also teach about and explain the 7 principles of Kwanzaa which are:
1. Umoja (oo-MOH-ja) which means Unity Building.
2. Kujichagulia (koo-jee-chagoo-
LEE-yah) which means Self-determination.
3. Ujima (oo-JEE-mah) which means Collective work and
responsibility.
4. Ujamaa (oo-JAH-ma) which means Cooperative economics.
5. Nia (nee-AH) which means Sense of purpose.
6. Kuumba (koo-OOM-bah) which means Creativity.
7. Imani (ee-MAH-nee) which means Faith

Together, the tradition of the seven symbols and seven principles of Kwanzaa are values of African culture
which contribute to building and reinforcing community among African Americans.

From the first day of the celebration on December 26th when the black candle in the center of the Kinara is lit to the final day of the celebration on January 1st when the final candle is lit, millions of people every year
will be celebrating Kwanzaa, a special week honoring the values or African cultures and inspiring African
Americans throughout the United States.

We hope you all have a wonderful and Happy Kwanzaa.

Why Machines That Bend Are Better
Why Machines That Bend Are Better Teacherflix 7 Views • 7 months ago

Compliant mechanisms have lots of advantages over traditional devices. SimpliSafe is awesome security. It's really effective, easy to use, and the price is great. Check out SimpliSafe here: https://simplisafe.com/veritasium

I visited the Compliant Mechanisms Research group at Brigham Young University and spoke to Professor Larry Howell:
https://www.compliantmechanisms.byu.edu

At the above link, you can download 3D-print files to make some of the objects in the video, plus learn more about compliant mechanisms.

What I learned about compliant mechanisms I summarize in the 8 P's of compliant mechanisms:

1. Part count (reduced by having flexible parts instead of springs, hinges)
2. Productions processes (many, new, different enabled by compliant designs)
3. Price (reduced by fewer parts and different production processes)
4. Precise Motion (no backlash, less wear, friction)
5. Performance (no outgassing, doesn't require lubricant)
6. Proportions (reduced through different production processes)
7. Portability (lightweight due to simpler, reduced part count designs)
8. Predictability (devices are reliable over a long period of time)

It would be a lot easier to study the science of dreaming if we weren’t asleep every time we did it. Why do we dream? What does dreaming do for our brains? How did dreaming evolve? Here’s a look at the current theories from psychology and neuroscience.
