When we talk about ‘English’, we often think of it as a single language. But what do the dialects spoken in dozens of countries around the world have in common with each other, or with the writings of Chaucer? Claire Bowern traces the language from the present day back to its ancient roots, showing how English has evolved through generations of speakers.

Lesson by Claire Bowern, animation by Patrick Smith.

This biology video tutorial provides a basic introduction into photosynthesis - the process by which plants use energy from sunlight to convert Carbon Dioxide and Water into Oxygen gas and sugars such as Glucose. Photosynthesis can be broken into two stages: The light dependent reactions and the light independent reactions also known as the Calvin Cycle or dark reactions. In the light dependent reactions, Water is oxidized into Oxygen gas by Photosystem II which transports the electrons in through the electron transport chain inside the thylakoid membrane eventually producing high energy molecules like ATP and NADPH. ATP is produced by the enzyme ATP Synthase in a process called Chemiosmosis very similar to cellular respiration. The Calvin Cycle takes in CO2, ATP, and NADPH to produce G3P which is later used to make sugars like Glucose and Fructose.

In this video we use GeoGebra 3D from geogebra.org to graph a cone with equation x^2 + y^2 + z^2 = 9 in rectangular and rho = 3 in spherical. Video of finding the equation here: https://youtu.be/BYCdO2vHp00
We use the surface command with parameters for theta and phi (I use t and v). After getting the graph to work we then create sliders for the upper bounds of the parameters and play around with it a bit. Playing around with this kind of thing on GeoGebra is the best way I've found to really learn what's going on.

Student pairs are given 10 minutes to create the biggest box possible using one piece of construction paper. Teams use only scissors and tape to each construct a box and determine how much puffed rice it can hold. Then, to meet the challenge, they improve their designs to create bigger boxes. They plot the class data, comparing measured to calculated volumes for each box, seeing the mathematical relationship. They discuss how the concepts of volume and design iteration are important for engineers. Making 3-D shapes also supports the development of spatial visualization skills. This activity and its associated lesson and activity all employ volume and geometry to cultivate seeing patterns and understanding scale models, practices used in engineering design to analyze the effectiveness of proposed design solutions.

Geometry on Khan Academy: We are surrounded by space. And that space contains lots of things. And these things have shapes. In geometry we are concerned with the nature of these shapes, how we define them, and what they teach us about the world at large--from math to architecture to biology to astronomy (and everything in between). Learning geometry is about more than just taking your medicine ("It's good for you!"), it's at the core of everything that exists--including you. Having said all that, some of the specific topics we'll cover include angles, intersecting lines, right triangles, perimeter, area, volume, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, analytic geometry, and geometric constructions. Wow. That's a lot. To summarize: it's difficult to imagine any area of math that is more widely used than geometry.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything
