Students are introduced to servos and the flex sensor as they create simple, one-jointed, finger robots controlled by Arduino. Servos are motors with feedback and are extensively used in industrial and consumer applications—from large industrial car-manufacturing robots that use servos to hold heavy metal and precisely weld components together, to prosthetic hands that rely on servos to provide fine motor control. Students use Arduino microcontrollers and flex sensors to read finger flexes, which they process to send angle information to the servos. Students create working circuits; use the constrain, map and smoothing commands; learn what is meant by library and abstraction in a coding context; and may even combine team finger designs to create a complete prosthetic hand of bendable fingers.

Student teams act as engineers and brainstorm, design, create and test their ideas for packaging to protect a raw egg shipped in a 9 x 12-in envelope. They follow the steps of the engineering design process and aim for a successful solution with no breakage, low weight, minimal materials and recycled/reused materials. Students come to understand the multi-faceted engineering considerations associated with the packaging of items to preserve, market and safely transport goods.

A world history teacher at Ron Brown College Prep, Travis Bouldin, shares his perspective on what it means to be a culturally responsive educator in this unique public high school for young men of color. A veteran educator who has taught in several other urban districts, Bouldin explains some of the effects that poverty, violence, and trauma has on his students' ability to learn and to interact with peers and adults. Ron Brown--which has an intense focus on developing students' social-emotional skills and creating a culture where students feel safe physically and comfortable expressing themselves in the classroom--also emphasizes a college-preparatory curriculum. For the past year, Education Week's Kavitha Cardoza and NPR's Cory Turner visited Ron Brown weekly -- and some weeks, daily -- to witness the birth of this new school and to see how its staff tackles some of the toughest challenges in education. This video covers another verb irregular in the preterite: poder (to be able, can).
This verb is most popular with my students in such present tense phrases as '¿Puedo ir al baño?' (Can I go to the bathroom?) o '¿Puedo ir a la fuente de agua?' (Can I go to the water fountain?). But of course those aren't really useful in this video since we're going over the preterite (a past tense) of poder.
