Research shows that the surroundings that people learn, live and work in can deeply impact their mental and physical health. The International WELL Building Institute has created a certification that measures that impact, and several schools across the country have implemented those best practices to become WELL certified. In this video, IWBI’s president and CEO, Rachel Hodgdon, shares the different elements that go into the certification and offers tips for districts looking to incorporate parts of it on a smaller scale.

The Checks and Balances that are in place in the United States are important for kids to understand and in this video we explain how the three branches of government can work together but are also in place to check on each other and make sure that not one branch has too much power.

Separation of power has been important since the United States were formed and In short the constitution states that there are to be three branches of government, and the balance of power between the branches will be equal. The 3 branches include the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches. The Legislative branch is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate make up the Legislative branch. The Executive branch includes the President, Vice-President, and the Cabinet, which is made up of people who give advice to the President such as Secretary of State, Defense, Homeland Security and many others. Finally, the Judicial branch consists of nine judges called justices, and they oversee the United States court system (The Supreme Court).

Each of these branches can keep the other branches in check and to pass any major law or bill these branches must learn to work together. In this video your kids / students will learn how the three branches work independently and together.

Student groups are provided with a generic car base on which to design a device/enclosure to protect an egg as it rolls down a ramp at increasing slopes. During this in-depth physics-science-technology-math activity, student teams design, build and test their prototype creations to meet the design challenge, and then perform basic mathematical calculations using collected data, including a summative cost-benefit ratio. Posed with a paradigmatic engineering problem, students consider and explore mathematical algorithms and/or geometric concepts to devise possible solutions. The problem: How should a robotic vacuum move in order to best clean a floor of unknown shape and dimensions? They grapple with what could be a complex problem by brainstorming ideas, presenting the best idea for a solution and analyzing all presented solutions, and then are introduced to an elegant solution. Rather than elaborately calculating the most efficient route and keeping track of which tiles the robot has visited, a random number generator determines which direction the robot will take when it hits a barrier. Students are able to visually confirm how an unfamiliar programming concept (a random number generator) can make for a simple and efficient program that causes an EV3 robot (that is suitably equipped) to clean a bare floor. Then students think of other uses for random numbers.
