Trigonometry on Khan Academy: Big, fancy word, right? Don't be fooled. Looking at the prefix, tri-, you could probably assume that trigonometry ("trig" as it's sometimes called) has something to do with triangles. You would be right! Trig is the study of the properties of triangles. Why is it important? It's used in measuring precise distances, particularly in industries like satellite systems and sciences like astronomy. It's not only space, however. Trig is present in architecture and music, too. Now you may wonder...how is knowing the measurement and properties of triangles relevant to music?? Linear Algebra on Khan Academy: Have you ever wondered what the difference is between speed and velocity? Ever try to visualize in four dimensions or six or seven? Linear algebra describes things in two dimensions, but many of the concepts can be extended into three, four or more. Linear algebra implies two dimensional reasoning, however, the concepts covered in linear algebra provide the basis for multi-dimensional representations of mathematical reasoning. Matrices, vectors, vector spaces, transformations, eigenvectors/values all help us to visualize and understand multi dimensional concepts. This is an advanced course normally taken by science or engineering majors after taking at least two semesters of calculus (although calculus really isn't a prereq) so don't confuse this with regular high school algebra.

Do you know what an abbreviation is or how to make one? An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase. You can make one by taking letters out and replacing them with other letters or symbols, such as a period. In this video, you and your kids will learn about some common abbreviations, many of which you probably use every day.

One of the most common abbreviations has to do with the time of day. We use a.m. in the morning hours and p.m. in the evening and night hours. What do those actually stand for? "Ante meridiem" is Latin for before noon, so we use a.m. for all the times before noon. "Post meridiem" is Latin for after noon, so we use p.m. for all the times after noon.

Other common abbreviations involve days of the week, months of the year, measurement, and time. For example, we can write Sat. for Saturday or Dec. for December rather than writing out the whole word. In recipe books, you will often find abbreviations for their measurements, like tsp for teaspoon or oz for ounce. And you've probably seen abbreviations like min for minutes or yr for year.

He is one of the most important presidents of the United States that we have ever had and played a vitally important role in the abolition of slavery in the United States. Let's learn about "The Great Emancipator" Abraham Lincoln together.

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. Lincoln educated himself using borrowed books. He never went to a formal school and at age 25 he got into politics and became an Illinois legislator. He began studying the law and worked as a lawyer, and later became a U.S. Congressman, but then lost trying to become a Senator. He argued against slavery, and fought hard his whole life to end that practice. In 1860 he became the President of the United States and during his term the United States broke out into a Civil War largely because of differing views about Slavery.

During the war Lincoln singed the Emancipation Proclamation that eventually lead to the 13th Amendment which ultimately helped abolish Slavery and freed millions of slaves. At the height of the Civil War he gave one of the most famous speeches in History...The Gettysburg Address. He was instrumental in the Civil War Victory and changed the path of history forever.
