This phonics lesson from Kids Academy will teach your child all about the letter M. The letter M and its sound makes up many basic words. By adding this phoneme students can begin spelling words like MOM, BAM, and HUM. This video will cover both the capital and lowercase Ms as well as use the M as an example to start many words.
M is the 13th letter of the alphabet and is usually taught early on because it is used in so many simple words. The \m\ sound is also a simple sound for students to make. In order to make the \m\ sound the lips are closed, the tongue rests at the base of the mouth and the teeth are separated. The vocal cords are then vibrated just like a hum. This type of sound is known as bilabial nasal. It uses both lips (bilabial) and the sound itself resonates in the nasal cavities. The \m\ sound transitions well into vowels as in the word MOP and MOAT.
The \m\ sound and the
\ sound are both formed very similarly in the mouth. They also make similar sounds. It is for this reason that these letters are often taught separately to give students a chance to understand one without confusing it with the other.
Because the \m\ sound is so distinctive students should be able to quickly learn it. They will also be able sound out words with Ms with ease.

Equal Parts | Math Lessons for 2nd Grade | Kids Academy

If your child is in the 2nd grade and if it’s time for him to learn about equal parts then you are at the right place. You see, if we talk about adults, it’s a piece of cake to tell if two parts are equal or not but when it comes to children, you need to do every possible thing you can to make maths interesting for them.

You can’t just go to your kid and define him what equal parts are. In fact, you need to show him what equal parts are and how to differentiate between equal parts and unequal parts.

Now, there are no doubt a lot of ways you can make this lesson interesting for your little one. You can use visuals to teach him about equal parts, you can use a worksheet to practice and feed in his brain about equal parts or you can just show him a video on Youtube where someone is teaching about equal parts using different characters and shapes, etc.

The point is that this is the digital world, we are living in and it’s good to use platforms like Youtube, etc to teach your kid some Math lessons. The best way to teach children about equal parts is to use a square piece of paper and cut it into two equal halves. Take another piece of paper and cut that one into two unequal parts.

Now, show the child both of the papers and tell him that the one that is equal in shape, size and the one that is taking equal space is called the known as the equal part and the other one that’s not taking equal space and is a little different in shape in size, is referred to as the unequal part.

So, everything can be easily categorized into three main categories

1. Color
2. Shape
3. Size

These are the easiest categories to differentiate and sort objects into. And by far this is the best logic game to play with kids. It helps them understand the concept of matching the same objects.

Game
All you need to do is to collect different objects of having different colors, shapes, and sizes. Now you can ask the kid to put these objects that fit together into their respective groups.

First, you can categorize based on their color. Objects with the same color go into the same group.
Then you can categorize based on their sizes. Same sized objects belong to one group.
And in the end, you can categorize based on their shapes. Start with simpler shapes like circle, square and triangle.

Chess is one of those games which help in increasing your child’s concentration. The most important thing which a child needs to know is the power and values of pieces. Here is a simple way to learn how to play chess in 10 minutes. Since every part has its strength and value, therefore, these are the things which need to be determined first. So, let’s begin!!!

Starting from the king; it is the most critical piece, and the opponents need to protect it to win the game. The weakest one in the game is Pawn which can attack two squares diagonally forward which makes it worth one point. For us, voting is a very simple process and we know why people vote and why it’s important for the country but to teach your kids about voting can be a little difficult because they don’t even have the slightest idea of how a vote works. Kids are introduced to the concept of place value in the second grade. Place Value is a core concept in math. But it’s difficult to teach a kid that the value of a digit (0-9) is dependent upon its position in a number. In place value, you have to teach the kid the position that a number holds and the value that number has.
You have to keep in mind that every kid will learn at his/her own pace so you have to be patient and understanding. The right time to teach place value is after the kids have learned to count and can perform simple additions and subtractions.

Hands-on methods and practical games are the most effective ways of teaching place value to a kid. One such method is by using poker chips.
Here are the steps for teaching place value using poker chips.

1. Introduce Group Counting
Teach students how to skip count in twos, threes, fours, fives, and tens. Especially emphasize the ‘sense of ten’. This concept is fundamental for the understanding of place value.

2. Teach the difference between numbers and digits
The basic ten number symbols (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9) are known as digits. These digits are combined together to make all other numbers in mathematics. Draw examples to demonstrate that ‘3’ and ‘5’are digits on their own but when combined, they make the number thirty-five.

3. Use a Number Board
Draw or print out a number board that contains numbers in sequential order from 1- 100. Explain to the kids using visual examples how the numbers from 0-9 interact with the numbers from 10 - 100. Teach the kids that every number from 10 – 99 is made up of two numbers. One number is in the ‘ones’ place and the second number is in the ‘tens’ place.

4. Use an Interactive Example
Now take out the poker chips and distribute them among the kids. Tell them that white poker chips stand for the ‘ones’ place whereas the blue poker chips stand for the ‘tens’ place. Now show the kids how to create numbers using place value with the help of poker chips.
It is not necessary to use poker chips or pebbles specifically. But it is your responsibility to make learning fun for the kids so you can use any small colored objects to demonstrate the examples.
