As childhood obesity soars among low-income communities with limited access to fresh produce, some educators in Colorado are combating the problem by joining the farm-to-preschool movement. Now these preschoolers are learning their ABCs while picking veggies from the school garden and preparing healthy meals.

The abacus predates the alphabet and the invention of glass, but its use can help modern day students increase their math proficiency and understanding. Ulrich Boser, the author of Learn Better, studied how the abacus requires decomposition -- a way of thinking about numbers and their pairs -- that is included in the common-core standards. Using an abacus helps students foster a mind-body connection, utilize their short term memory, and grow their confidence, all which help kids learn better. In this video, Boser, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, challenges his daughters to solve math problems using a Japanese abacus. ____________________

Paris Kent, the dance director at Bellaire High School in Houston, has sent her students into physics classes to help students learn about the rotation of an axis through the movement of their bodies, demonstrating how a personโs size impacts the speed of the rotation. Itโs just one way Kent works to incorporate dance across the curriculum.
But the methods for utilizing movement are just as plentiful as the reasons for doing soโfrom giving students an opportunity to share elements of their culture, creating connections between students and their teachers, and increasing student engagement.
Here, Kent shares how teachers can incorporate dance and movement into their classrooms in small, time-effective ways.
At the Bronx Parent Center in New York, professors are training parents to play a more active role in their children's schooling, teaching them strategies for helping their children build academic, behavioral, and social skills. ____________________

Welcome to the 2024 K12 Innovation Challenge National Finalistsโ Presentations!
This year, we invited students in grades Kโ12 to submit creative solutions for safeguarding our delicate ecosystems. In partnership with Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants, Clearwater
Marine Aquarium, and Ecology Project International, K12 challenged students to address environmental issues within their communities or globally. Students worked individually or in teams of up to three to design, submit, and present proposals in one of six theme areas: habitat restoration, ocean vitality, future farm, endangered species, animal welfare rescue, community engagement.
Today, we celebrate the final presentations from middle and high school students and crown our national winners! Congratulations to all the students presenting todayโyouโve done incredible work, and the world needs your big ideas. We also extend our gratitude to all participants for sharing your innovative solutions with us.

In the latest edition of Kids Teach, K12 CEO James Rhyu sits down in the studio with
Emma, Laila, and Maliyaโthree student fashion expertsโto discuss their field, in which James admits he has a lot to learn. Hear about how they became interested in fashion from both personal expression and business perspectives, and learn about the support networks helping them reach for their dreams.
When the students get to ask the questions, James gives some insight about his career path and what it now means for him to be making an impact in the online education sector thatโs opening up opportunities for more students than ever.
Student teams act as engineers and learn about systems thinking and scale by reassembling the separated pages of the engaging picture book, โZoom,โ by Istvan Banyai. The book is a series of 31 wordless pictures that start very close-up and then zoom outโfrom a roosterโs comb to outer space. Like a movie camera, each subsequent page pulls back to reveal the context of the previous scene as something different than what you originally thought. When the 31 un-numbered pages are jumbled, it is a surprising challenge for teams to figure out how the pictures connect. The task prompts students to pause and look closer so as to adjust to new points of view and problem solve to find a logical sequence. It requires them to step back and take a broader view. Students learn that engineers work together as teams and look at things very closely so that they see different things and come up with more than one solution when problem solving. To conclude, students go outside and practice their skills by imagining and then drawing their own Zoom-like small booklet stories inspired by items found in nature. The classic duck/rabbit ambiguous drawing is provided as a kickoff visual aid.
This engineering curriculum aligns to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Students are introduced to servos and the flex sensor as they create simple, one-jointed, finger robots controlled by Arduino. Servos are motors with feedback and are extensively used in industrial and consumer applicationsโfrom large industrial car-manufacturing robots that use servos to hold heavy metal and precisely weld components together, to prosthetic hands that rely on servos to provide fine motor control. Students use Arduino microcontrollers and flex sensors to read finger flexes, which they process to send angle information to the servos. Students create working circuits; use the constrain, map and smoothing commands; learn what is meant by library and abstraction in a coding context; and may even combine team finger designs to create a complete prosthetic hand of bendable fingers.

Students create and use their own simple compasses, which are each made from a bowl of water, strong magnet, stick pin and Styrofoam peanuts. They learn how compasses work and about cardinal directions. They come to understand that the Earth's magnetic field has both horizontal and vertical components.

The schoolโs playground is flooded again, and the students cannot go out to recess! Students learn about the different states of matter and how water changes. They use this knowledge, along with research about natural disasters, to come up with an engineering solution that prevents playground flooding. They plan and design a model, test it, and share results. After sharing results, they redesign and complete at least two more trials to find the optimal solution.
