Place Values are a very fundamental concept in mathematics. The number system in our world is quite complex for kids. Therefore, it is essential to teach them the basics of exchange, trading, position, and value of numbers. The teaching of tens ones and hundreds forms the basis for more complex arithmetic problems. At the beginning of 2nd grade, kids are usually given the concept of ones and tens. After a while, they move a step further to place value of hundreds.
Place value can be taught in several ways. But it is important to make the teaching interesting for the kids. One basic strategy of teaching place value hundreds is as follows:
1. Check the Concept of Ones and Tens

Write a 2 digit number on the board or distribute some poker chips or any colored inanimate objects among students (it is better if you use the objects previously used for teaching ones and tens), and ask the students to identify the tens place and ones place in the written number. If you are using objects to teach then ask the kids how they can trade ones for tens.
When you are sure that they know the place values of ones and tens clearly, you can start teaching the place value of a hundred.

2. Write Hundred on the White Board or Give Them the Third Set of Colored Objects

Tell kids how to skip count in the forms of 10, 20, 30…… 90. Once they start skip counting, write a 3 digit number on the board and ask them for its place values. Now tell them how to trade tens for hundreds.
Again it will be helpful to give them the third set of colored objects and label them as value hundreds than ask the kids to trade them for tens.

3. Start Playing and Asking Questions

Now is the right time to start playing games of 3 digit numbers. Ask the kids simple questions of how they will add or subtract the 3 digit numbers. Cement the concept of place value hundreds in their brains using such small games.

It's Kids Academy and welcome back to our channel! When comparing numbers, learners will examine and then assess whether a given number is greater than, less than or equal to another number. When students are comparing numbers correctly, they are able to make logical estimations, solve division problems more easily and develop number sense.

When children are efficient with counting to 100 and familiar with place value, then they can begin to compare 2-digit numbers. Students usually doing math in 1st grade are ready to be comparing numbers. Using base 10 counting blocks, students can show a given quantity.

For example, the number of twenty-five can be shown with the blocks as 2 tens and 5 ones. Likewise, number 43 can be shown as 4 tens and 3 ones. The student can easily see that number 43 is greater than 25. Now the child can assign the “greater than” math symbol to the problem.

Base 10 counting blocks are a great tool to use when comparing numbers for 1st grade, but other visual tools are effective when teaching this math skill.

The Kid’s Academy comparing numbers video is a great visual for instruction or reinforcement of this math concept. In the video, the student sees fun race cars zooming down a track. Each of the cars has 2 digit numbers on the side. The speaker in the video then compares the different numbers on the cars.

Students are also shown how to assign the “greater than” and “less than” math symbols correctly as well as reminded to look at the number in the tens place when first making the comparison. Furthermore, students are shown several racing cars and have ample opportunity to practice comparing 2-digit numbers.

Comparing numbers for 1st grade is fun with the use of the counters and engaging videos. After instruction students are ready to compare and describe quantities and use this knowledge in everyday life.

Line Plots | Teaching Math for Second Grade | Kids Academy

If your little one is now old enough to read textbooks of maths for second grade and if now it’s that time when he is supposed to start learning about line plots and what they are then yes, you are at the right place! We are going to tell you how to make it a fun process to teach your little one about line plots and educate him about where these plots are used.

For starters, we totally agree with the fact that maths is a little boring for children and they easily lose interest in this subject. Especially when you will be teaching your little one about line plots, it would be very normal if he won’t pay attention to you. On the other hand, you don’t actually have a choice and you need to educate them somehow which is where you need to start focusing on the part where you need to make maths a little exciting for your children.

For those who don’t know, a line plot is basically a line graph that is more of a chart where information is displayed along the lines with numbers on them. Now, to teach your child about line plots, you can make them watch online videos, especially the Youtube ones because there are people giving away free Youtube lectures for grade 2 kids for maths and all the other subjects too.

If you opt for visuals, chances are that your child will learn things quicker and he won’t feel dull or bored in that case. So, use online videos to teach your children and play different math fun games too so that your child can develop some interest in this subject.

You will have to put in some effort in your child right now but we assure you that this effort and all your struggle will be worth the results.
