Please note: this trick works for the SAT and the ACT, and for any other multiple choice math test as well! Also, as a lot of you have pointed out in the comments, this problem isn't particularly tough - and you're right! I'm just using this problem as an example. This trick is NOT better than just solving the math problem on your own if you know how. It IS a lot better than randomly guessing - so, if you're stuck on a problem, or if you're out of time, this trick will give you a far better than random chance of getting the right answer!

A quadratic equation is an equation in the form of ax^2 + bx + c = 0, where x is the variable and a, b, and c are constants. Quadratic equations can be solved using various methods such as factoring, completing the square, or using the quadratic formula: x = (-b ± √(b^2 - 4ac)) / 2a. The solutions to a quadratic equation are known as the roots and are represented by x1 and x2.

Algebra II on Khan Academy: Your studies in algebra 1 have built a solid foundation from which you can explore linear equations, inequalities, and functions. In algebra 2 we build upon that foundation and not only extend our knowledge of algebra 1, but slowly become capable of tackling the BIG questions of the universe. We'll again touch on systems of equations, inequalities, and functions...but we'll also address exponential and logarithmic functions, logarithms, imaginary and complex numbers, conic sections, and matrices. Don't let these big words intimidate you. We're on this journey with you!

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

In this lesson, you will learn how to rewrite an improper fraction as a mixed number. Let's start with the improper fraction seven-thirds.
How many whole units does seven-thirds make? Two.
And how many parts are left over? One.
Write the left over part as a fraction.
Seven-thirds can be rewritten as two and one-third.
Let's look at a few more examples. We start with the improper fraction fourteen-thirds.
How many whole units does fourteen-thirds make? Four.
And two parts are left over.
Write the left over part as a fraction.
Fourteen-thirds can be rewritten as four and two-thirds.
Let's take a look at one final example. We start with the improper fraction three-halves.
How many whole units does three-halves make? One.

Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.

This Math Shorts episode explains the term "reflection", and provides several examples that demonstrate the concept.

This video was made for the PBS Learning Media library, thanks to a generous grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. It was produced in collaboration with Utah Education Network.

Common Core State Standards:
CCSS.Math.Cont.8.G.A.4 ( Grade 8 ): Understand that a two-dimensional figure is similar to another if the second can be obtained from the first by a sequence of rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations; given two similar two-dimensional figures, describe a sequence that exhibits the similarity between them.
