AI Educational Evolution | Past, Present, Future | Learning & Teaching | Generative AI | Video E Teacherflix 4 Views • 6 days ago

Education has constantly been evolving, from simple tools like the abacus to the valuable scrolls in ancient schools. How have these changes shaped the way we learn? The invention of the printing press drastically changed our access to knowledge, making us wonder: How would we learn without physical books to read? And moving into the digital age, with online platforms like Khan Academy, could we have imagined the global reach of education without the internet?

Now, as we move further into the 21st century, AI is set to change education once again. Imagine a history lesson powered by AI, or a math lesson that solves problems in real time, adjusting to each learner's pace! But these exciting advances bring up important questions. If AI can predict and meet student needs, is this a new form of active teaching? And, can AI, even with its precision, replace the human touch and connection in our classrooms? When AI speeds up language learning, should we reconsider traditional teaching methods?

While AI offers wide and transformative possibilities, we must ask ourselves: Can technology genuinely encompass the full experience of education? Can machines reflect human emotion and shared experiences? In our pursuit of efficiency, do we risk losing the depth of human experience? Isn't education more than just gaining information?

Isn't education more than just gaining information? Isn't it also about transformation and growth? Perhaps AI can enhance that. But as we embrace this digital evolution, we must consider: How do we balance technological advancement with preserving the intrinsic human elements that have always been the foundation of meaningful education?

Artificial Intelligence Classroom Behaviour Monitoring AI Class Monitor
Artificial Intelligence Classroom Behaviour Monitoring AI Class Monitor Teacherflix 29 Views • 2 years ago

With a teacher-to-pupil ratio of 1:80 in most Nigerian schools, the quality of pupils’ attention and learning engagement continues to be on a nosedive trajectory with a negative impact on pupils’ motivation to learn, increasing drop-out rate, and the socio-economic risks of a poorly educated populace. According to a report by the United Nations Children's Fund, over 58.3% of pupils in Nigerian schools are not learning effectively (Vanguard News, 2018). Teachers are also becoming ineffective at inspiring pupils’ concentration via a classroom atmosphere that facilitates effective learning. The additional demands on teachers due to the higher pupil to teacher ratio also limits opportunities for teachers to offer personalised learning adapted to the children’s learning needs and providing the necessary psychological support.

This work explores how deep learning-powered cameras in a classroom can assist teachers to recognize and assess their pupils’ engagement levels and classroom behavioural patterns, with the goal of intervening when students need motivation and assistance. Specifically, the artificial intelligence algorithm assesses the students' facial expressions, classroom activities and their demonstrated levels of interest. We propose an integrated approach that includes neural network facial recognition and an Apriori-based mood extraction and human action detection to uniquely understand each pupil's learning needs. With a relatively low-cost camera that can quickly and precisely read pupils’ facial expression and class behaviour, many learning risk indicators such as emotional stress, personal frustrations, fatigue, academic disconnection and learning dysfunction can be automatically identified, allowing the teacher to intervene appropriately as needed.

CATHERINE THE GREAT

The reign of Catherine II (Catherine the Great) is known to history as the “Age of Enlightened Absolutism,” in Russia. A whole generation of people grew up enjoying freedom of speech, political stability, and great victories.

BACKGROUND
After the death of Elizabeth, her nephew, Peter III, from Northern Germany ruled disastrously. His wife, Sophie Friederike Auguste, was a pretty German princess who had been invited to Russia while still very young. She converted to Orthodoxy, learned the Russian language, and took the name Catherine. In 1762, she launched a coup against her husband and became the Empress of Russia, known as Catherine the Great.

ENLIGHTENED MONARCH
Catherine continued Peter the Great’s line of modernization, and she strongly supported education and culture. She prepared drafted laws based on the views of the Enlightenment, but the greater part of her ambitious plans, including the abolition of serfdom, led nowhere.

PATRON OF NOBILITY
The great Administration Reform of 1775 increased the administrative power of the nobility. Courts and police institutions were established. The reform significantly increased the effectiveness of local government in Russia.

FOREIGN POLICY
In the beginning, Catherine’s foreign policy was in the hands of Nikita Panin. The commanders Alexander Suvorov, Fyodor Ushakov, and Grigory Potemkin, greatly expanded Russia’s territory in the south and west. In 1784, Crimea was taken from the Ottomans, and the three partitions, formed in 1772, 1793 and 1795, respectively, completely wiped Poland off the map.

PUGACHEV'S REBELLION
Catherine supported the Enlightenment only to a certain extent. She denounced the French Revolution as a brutal act against monarchy.

Although Catherine tried to improve the situation of Russian peasants, these attempts were mostly futile and caused unrest. In 1773, the greatest armed revolt in Russia, constituting 100,000 Cossacks, led by Yemelyan Pugachev, who claimed that he was actually Peter III, was put down ruthlessly. Pugachev was publicly executed.

Would it surprise you to learn that fish and birds count in pretty much the same way that we do? And that infants can do math? Our animal brains deal with quantities in very specific ways, from quick counts of a few dots to how we perceive larger numbers. This "number sense" impacts our psychology, history, and behavior in the most fascinating ways.
