For this maker challenge, students move through the engineering design process. They investigate Python and Jupyter Notebook to analyze real astronomical images in order to calculate the interstellar distance to a star cluster across the Milky Way from our own Solar System. They learn how to write Python code that runs in a Jupyter Notebook so they can determine the brightness of stars in an astronomical image. Next, students complete the functions in the project to determine how far away a single star in the cluster is from Earth. This is a chance to try hands-on astronomical research techniques in the field of aperture photometry. The real astronomical image data will be directly manipulated and analyzed by code the students create. Groups compare their final images and results to answer questions about the astronomy of stars and stellar distances within the Milky Way. Students experience their discoveries the same way Harvard scientist Harlow Shapley first learned the true size and shape of the Milky Way.

This lesson teaches how to subtract 1-digit numbers from multiples of ten with regrouping. Practice free: http://www.ilearn.com/subtract

This playlist teaches how to subtract numbers from two digits through 4 digits. The make a ten strategy covered in the Addition and Subtraction playlist is used in these lessons to teach regrouping. http://www.ilearn.com/subtract

The playlist is organized so that students progress from the simplest cases with the smallest number of digits and no regrouping to the more difficult cases with 4-digit numbers and regrouping in more than one place.

If you prefer to read, rather than watch this video, here’s the transcript:

Title: Learn to subtract 1-digit numbers from multiples of ten with regrouping.

You can already subtract a one-digit number from 10 and 20.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to subtract a 1-digit number from other numbers made up of tens.
Here's an example. 40 minus 2.
Forty is 4 tens.
We start subtracting in the ones place.
We can't subtract 2 from 0, so we have to take a ten from 40 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 4 in 40 to show we took a ten and we enter a 3 here to show we have 3 tens left in the tens place, which is 30.
We put a 1 here to show that we made ten ones.
Now we subtract 2 from the 10 ones.
10 minus 2 is 8.
In the tens place, there's nothing to subtract, so we bring down the 3.
That gives us 38.
So 40 minus 2 is 38.
Another example. 60 minus 7.
Sixty is 6 tens.
We start subtracting in the ones place.
We can't subtract 7 from 0, so we have to take a ten from 60 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 6 in 60 to show we took a ten and write a 5 above it to show there are 5 tens left, which is 50.
We show that we made ten ones by putting a 1 here.
Now we subtract 7 from the 10 ones.
10 minus 7 is 3.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 5 we have left.
That gives us 53.
So 60 minus 7 is 53.
Last example. 80 minus 4.
We start with the ones place.
We can't subtract 4 from 0, so we have to take a ten from 80 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 8 in 80 to show that we took a ten.
And we write 7 here to show there are 7 tens left, which is 70.
We put a 1 here to show that we made ten ones.
Now we subtract 4 from 10.
10 minus 4 is 6.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 7 we have left.
That gives us 76.
So 80 minus 4 is 76.
In the rest of this lesson, you'll work problems like these. You can use these boxes if you want, but you don’t have to.

This video is a virtual math worksheet for solving decimals with exponents. I give you 4 practice problems that you can work on your own and then check your answers.

When solving for decimals with exponents, I recommend writing it out in expanded form first. Multiply your whole numbers next. Then move your decimal to the left by the number of digits to the right of your decimal (total number from your expanded form).

Improved math is a channel created to provide additional instruction on essential math concepts. I’m passionate about math and I know first-hand how important math concepts are in the real world.

Teachers, parents, guardians, homeschoolers, and students can use these videos to help reinforce math skills. These math videos are designed to help teach yourself math or provide self-study math tools to assist when additional instruction is needed. Teaching math and learning math has changed the way many students learn in this virtual environment and during the pandemic. Having on-demand math videos can provide math tutoring needed when children are not able to get help from their teachers after school hours or when trying to do math at home.

The library of math tutorials that I create can also be used as supplemental instructional material for homeschool math. Each full-length video comes with a subsequent knowledge check or math practice problems which serve as a virtual math topic worksheet to test your understanding of each skill. These videos can be paused to work out the problems on your own, then unpaused to check your answers. All of these videos can be found under the Knowledge Check playlist.

I also have a library of shorter videos (less than 1 minute in length - shorts) that are quick math tips and tricks on basic math topics. Some of these short math help videos include problems that you can work on yourself and submit your answers in the comments. They are all listed under my Math Tips and Tricks playlist.

Improved math is creating more videos every day to cover topics from 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, and 7th-grade math. The videos focus on fractions, basic math operations, geometry, and ratios but more topics are being added all the time. If there is a specific topic you would like to see covered, drop me a comment in one of my videos and let me know!

Free math help videos will be posted every Thursday and Friday. For additional math resources, check out my math help website at improvedmath.com where I post math worksheets and answers along with additional context on math basics.

Linear Algebra on Khan Academy: Have you ever wondered what the difference is between speed and velocity? Ever try to visualize in four dimensions or six or seven? Linear algebra describes things in two dimensions, but many of the concepts can be extended into three, four or more. Linear algebra implies two dimensional reasoning, however, the concepts covered in linear algebra provide the basis for multi-dimensional representations of mathematical reasoning. Matrices, vectors, vector spaces, transformations, eigenvectors/values all help us to visualize and understand multi dimensional concepts. This is an advanced course normally taken by science or engineering majors after taking at least two semesters of calculus (although calculus really isn't a prereq) so don't confuse this with regular high school algebra.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything
