225 Southern Nevada Teachers Just Spent a Day Learning to Use AI in the Classroom
Your kid's teacher may be planning lessons with ChatGPT this year, and roughly 225 local educators just got formally trained on how.
OpenAI Academy and Legacy Traditional Schools hosted a day-long AI Skills Jam at Green Valley Ranch Resort in Henderson.
About 225 Southern Nevada educators attended.
It is part of a national K-12 training series.
Sessions covered using tools like ChatGPT and Codex for lesson plans, grading, and family communication.
Grading is the word in that list that will stop most parents cold.
The teachers at the event pushed back hard on the idea that any of this replaces them.
First-grade teacher Madison Bailey said she is still the expert in her field. Instructional coach Adrienne Avelar said the goal is making sure students are still learning.
Both of those quotes are the right instinct, and they also do not settle the argument.
Here is where I land. Teachers in Clark County are drowning in work that has nothing to do with teaching. Lesson prep, parent emails, documentation, and paperwork eat the hours that should go to kids. If AI gives a first-grade teacher back 45 minutes a day, that is a real win for your child.
The line I would draw is on grading and on anything that becomes a substitute for a teacher actually reading a student's work. A rubric is not the same as knowing that a kid who normally writes three sentences just wrote nine.
The other thing worth watching is that the training came from OpenAI. Free professional development from the company selling the product is useful and it is also marketing. Districts should be pairing it with their own policy.
Parents deserve to know what the rules are. Most Clark County families have no idea whether AI is allowed in their kid's classroom, banned, or somewhere in between.
Ask at your next conference.
Do you want AI in your child's Clark County classroom, or should it stay out? Tell me where you stand.
