New York is restricting generative AI use for students through 8th grade—but is banning AI from the classroom actually protecting children, or could it leave them less prepared for the world they’re about to inherit?

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing education, technology, business, healthcare, engineering, finance, media, and the workplace. Today’s elementary and middle-school students will enter a job market where AI literacy may be as fundamental as knowing how to use computers and the internet.

In this episode, I challenge the idea that keeping younger students away from generative AI is necessarily the best solution.

There are legitimate concerns. Students shouldn't use ChatGPT or other AI tools to simply complete assignments, avoid learning, or replace critical thinking. Children still need to learn how to write, research, solve problems, communicate, and think independently.

But there's another side to this debate:

What if the answer isn't banning AI—but teaching children how to use it responsibly?

Schools could teach students how AI works, how to recognize hallucinations and misinformation, how to verify sources, how to write effective prompts, how to protect their privacy, and—most importantly—how to use AI as a tool without allowing it to do their thinking for them.

AI isn't disappearing. The children sitting in classrooms today are going to live and work in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence.

So where should we draw the line?

Should schools restrict generative AI until students are older? Or should AI literacy become part of education from an early age, with age-appropriate safeguards and teacher supervision?

Don't ban the future. Teach it.

Tell me what you think in the comments: At what age should students start learning how to use AI?
