Financial literacy is becoming a more pressing issue for high school students, as many are about to begin a postsecondary education that often comes with a significant burden of debt. In 2020, two-thirds of students who earned a bachelor's degree graduated with debt, compared to less than half in 1993. With the increasing cost of higher education, and the addition of credit card access for students, it's more important than ever for them to understand how to manage their finances. This is why states like Florida and Michigan are now requiring students to take a financial literacy course before they can graduate high school. This will help students to better understand their college loans and consequences, and make more informed decisions about their future. Standalone personal finance classes are becoming more common in schools across the country, as the idea is to allow for a more in-depth exploration of the topic and hands-on learning opportunities. With a widespread lack of financial literacy among Americans of all ages, this is a step in the right direction.
