Class Description
Did someone say “Novel Study”? Students will read a teacher-selected novel that will help them develop a deeper understanding of literature and themselves. Upon completing this course, students will be able to identify key literary elements such as author’s purpose, theme, and characterization. Students will analyze the novel and other related material to further improve writing, reading, comprehension, research, and critical-thinking skills. Through the novel study, activities, and class discussions, students will gain a better understanding of literature and how it connects them to the real world.

Beth Lawrence, M.A., CCC-SLP, Visual Critical Thinking as a Way to Learn Nuanced Vocabulary
Beth Lawrence holds a Master of Arts degree in speech-language pathology from Northwestern University. She worked in schools, and had a private practice in the Baltimore area for 17 years. She partnered with Deena Seifert, and together they have over 50 years combined experience working with students of all ages with language, reading and writing disorders. Deena and Beth created two highly visual vocabulary programs, InferCabulary and WordQuations. They authored the Test of Semantic Reasoning, which assesses depth of vocabulary knowledge and critical thinking.
Summary:
The session will include both low and high tech methods for helping students really “get” vocabulary. A five minute TedX Talk introduction shares research and background support for how children make meaning from language. Participants are introduced to InferCabulary online then discuss best practices and strategies.
