z-scores are helpful because they allow us to make inferences about any normal distribution by converting points or values of interest to a value, z, in the standard normal distribution (mean is zero and standard deviation is one).

We can use a z-table to look up z-scores and determine the percent of the distribution above or below the z-score and then relate it back to the distribution we start with.

Also, z-scores are a measure of how many standard distributions a number is away from the mean.

Images used in this video were created using GeoGebra.

A horizontal shift of a function occurs when a constant is added or subtracted within the input location (where you enter your values into your variable on the right hand side of a function).

The rules for how much you shift a function horizontally and the direction you shift a function sometimes feel out of thin air.

This video attempts to provide some context for the rules that students normally commit to memory for horizontal shifts.

Summations (sigma notation) is used to represent a large sum of terms that follow a pattern. In calculus you will learn about series, which are sums with an infinite number of terms. But before you get to that, you need to understand the basic notation.

A common example provided in the video is the sum of 1 through 100. Also, a short introduction to the sum of 1 through some positive natural number n is discussed.

Graphing a horizontal line of the form y=a where "a" is as easy as finding the value "a" on the y-axis and drawing a horizontal line at that location. It can be easy to confuse y=a with x=a, but remember that y=a is the equation for a horizontal line.

Getting from JoeCMath 1.0 to JoeCMath 2.0 by improving math video quality!

I have been happy with my production style so far, but feel that I can and should still improve the quality of my videos. There is a Math YouTube channel 3Blue1Brown, created by Grant Sanderson, that hosts easily the best math videos on YouTube. Naturally, I have been researching how Grant accomplishes this and it turns out it is through a collection of Python and other various files that he calls Manim.

For my 100 subscriber video, I spent time learning some of the basics of Manim and put together my first video using it. I am excited about the future Manim videos that I create, as they can only improve from here!

First off, I'd like to thank everyone that has subscribed and supported my channel in it's first year on YouTube. I had set some rather crazy goals that I fell short of but allow me to better plan out 2021 and future years.

I was surprised that there were a decent number of people that were sharing my content in the first year! This channel is something I have had knocking around in my head ever since 2015 (after tutoring math non-stop for four years and teaching for two years), and so I am mostly proud of just finally getting started.

I am quite excited about the future of this channel! Let's make 2021 a great year!

Welcome our new video: Mental Math Strategies and Activities for Kids | Kids Academy

Math strategies and activities for kids are the healthiest activities for kids and their brains. The more they work with math the sharper their minds become. If you can build a strong grip of a child on math at this early age he/she can easily handle the upcoming massive difficult mathematics that waits for them in higher standards.

There are a number of mental math strategies that you can adapt to make your child mathematics strong.

1. Mad minutes
In this strategy, the student will answer as many math questions as possible in 60 seconds. It is a series of daily activities and is uses focused and theme-based math problems. It enables a sharp mind to work quickly. A good practice of this game will train the brain to work quickly and solve problems quickly.

2. Number Talks
This strategy can make add a lot easier for kids. It might not be the perfect way to add but it can help kids to understand the concept on a basic level. For example, if the question is 5+5. So simply you count to 5, then to add next 5, you count the next 5 numbers, that is 6,7,8,9,10. This gives you an answer of 10 so 5+5=10.
This trick can make addition or subtraction very easy for kids.

3. Number songs

Things that rhyme is the easiest to remember that is why you remember even the songs you heard years ago because the rhythm stays in your brain. So why not learn math with rhythm too.

You can make a song or anything in math, just add some words that rhyme with each other and that will help you remember all the steps that you need to perform in a question. As you sing the song you will complete the steps.

So, these were some mental math strategies that you can use with kids to make their math stronger.

Learn to Play Chess - What Is Check | Kids Academy

One of the basic knowledge of chess includes the understanding of check and checkmate. In this tutorial let’s focus on checking more and learning to play chess for beginners.

In very simple words, in chess the word check means that the king is under attack and is being threatened by any of the characters on the chessboard. The king is in danger and needs to save himself from getting captured. Since in chess, we don’t capture the king so at the turn before when the king would be captured we say that it's checkmate and the game is over.

Now if you are asking why the only king gets the check, well simply because the king is the most important character on the chessboard. He is the leader of the army and hence the king must be kept safe from any attacks. The main objective of the whole chess game is to protect your own king and attack and surround the opponent's king until it is checkmate and the opponent cannot save their king.

From here the rook can directly attack the black king and hence the king is now in danger, which in chess words means that the king is in check. In the next turn, the white rook will easily capture the black king.

The black king now needs to save himself. The king can save itself using any of the three strategies, either it can capture/attack, it can protect itself, or it can run away. This strategy is explained in another tutorial on the check and checkmate further.

So now you see that the king can be in danger by any of the characters and needs to be saved. You can use further examples to explain even more to your kid.

The more the kid understands the game the more interested he/she would feel in it otherwise it would just become a boring lecture for them to make sure that it is interesting to the kids. Before you teach them first learn how to play chess for kids so that you can explain to them by coming down at their level of understanding.

It's Kids Academy, and welcome back to our channel! In this educational video for kids, we will read aloud the children's folk tale "The king of the cats". More interesting short stories and nursery rhymes you can find on our channel. Stay tuned!

The King of the Cats
Once there were two brothers who lived in a distant village. Elshender was the elder, and the younger was Fergus. They had a big black cat.
One day Fergus went out hunting alone. He told Elshender he’d be back for supper that evening. Evening came, but Fergus was still away.
Elshender was worried that his brother had gotten into trouble. At last, Fergus returned, wet and exhausted.
After supper, the brothers sat down by the fire, and their black cat lay between them. “Why were you away for so long?” Elshender asked.
“I’ve had a very strange adventure today. I hardly know what to say about it,” Fergus replied. And then he told his incredible story.
Fergus was going home when a thick fog came on the path. He climbed a tall tree to look around. In the trunk of the tree was a big hollow.
He could hear some music and see some light coming out of it. Fergus looked inside and gasped. He seemed to be looking into a church!
A funeral was taking place there. He saw a coffin surrounded by torches, all of them carried by cats! The coffin was marked with a crown.
Fergus got no farther, for the black cat jumped to his feet shrieking: “My stars! Old Peter’s dead, and now I’m the King of the Cats!”
Then he rushed up the chimney and was seen no more.

Welcome back to the Kids Academy channel. Little Red Riding Hood is a classic bedtime story about the little girl and her trip from mother's house to granny. The story revolves around a girl called Little Red Riding Hood. The girl walks through the woods to deliver food to her sickly grandmother.
A Big Bad Wolf wants to eat the girl and the food in the basket. He secretly stalks her behind trees, bushes, shrubs, and patches of little and tall grass. He approaches Little Red Riding Hood, and she naively tells him where she is going. He suggests that the girl pick some flowers, which she does. In the meantime, he goes to the grandmother's house and gains entry by pretending to be the girl. He swallows the grandmother whole and waits for the girl, disguised as the grandma.

Once there was a sweet little girl. She was very pretty, and everyone loved her. She lived with her mother. Her mother gave her a lot of presents all the time. Once she made a little red riding hood from a piece of velvet. It was a very pretty hood and the little girl looked very pretty when she wore it. She loved the hood so much that she wore it all the time and did not wear anything else. As she always wore the red riding hood she was given the name of Little Red Riding Hood.

One day her mother baked some cakes for her mother. She gave the cakes to Little Red Riding Hood and asked her to deliver them to her grandmother’s. Her grandmother lived on the other side of the forest in another village. Her mother advised the Little Red Riding Hood to go on the straight path and do not wander in the forest as it was very dangerous to go in there alone.

Little Red Riding Hood took the cakes and started her journey to her grandmother’s house. While she was on her way and was passing through the woods, a wolf saw her. The wolf’s mouth filled with water and he wanted to eat her immediately. However, he was afraid of the woodcutters working nearby. Little Red Riding Hood was unaware of his wickedness and how dangerous he was. She was not all afraid of him. The wolf came up with a very cunning plan to eat Little Red Riding Hood.

He greeted Little Red Riding Hood and asked her where she was going. Little Red Riding Hood was very sweet, and she told him that he was going to her grandmother’s house who lived on the other side of the forest. The wolf was very cunning. He knew the shortcut way to the grandmother’s house. As soon as he knew that Little Red Riding Hood was going to her grandmother’s house, he ran as fast as he could to reach there before the little girl. Little Red Riding Hood, however, continued on her normal path.

As she was passing through the woods she saw some beautiful and very colorful flowers on the ground. She wanted to make her grandmother very happy, so she decided to make a bouquet of the flowers for her. She thought that her grandmother would feel very happy after seeing the flowers. She started picking flowers, however as she kept on picking up the flowers she kept on going further and further into the woods. She did not realize that she was going deep into the forest and it was very dangerous.

This gave the wolf even more time to reach the grandmother’s house before her. When the wolf reached the house, he knocked on the door. The grandmother was old and seemed sick. She couldn’t come to the door, so she asked from inside who was at the door. The clever wolf replied in Little Red Riding Hood voice that it was her grandchild, Little Red Riding Hood. The grandmother could not sense that it was someone else, she told him to come in as the door was not locked.

The wolf immediately entered the house and went straight to the grandmother’s bed and ate her up. Then he carried out the next part of his plan as he still wanted to eat Little Red Riding Hood. He took the grandmother’s clothes, wore her cap and laid down in her bed. He also dropped the curtains so that Little Red Riding Hood does not recognize him.

After some time, Little Red Riding Hood arrived at her grandmother’s house and knocked at the door. The wolf now used her grandmother’s voice to ask who was on the door. The sweet little girl replied that it was her and that she had brought the cakes and butter that her mother had made for her in the morning. The wolf very cleverly said to Little Red Riding Hood that the door was open, and she could come in. The little girl went into the house, not knowing the danger that laid ahead of her.

What Is Checkmate? | Definition and Meaning | Learn to Play Chess

The most important word associated with chess is checkmate. It is how a player either wins or loses the game. Therefore before you explain the other rules of chess to kids, start with the most basic knowledge of checkmate, so that they know what they need to know in order to win the game.

You know about CPR, capture protect runaway. If the king cannot get out of CPR situation it means checkmate. In simple words, if the king is being attacked and it cannot save itself in any way we say its checkmate and the game is over.

Since in chess we do not capture the king so checkmate means that it is the turn before we would capture the king, which simply means the king is trapped and there is no way out.

Let me explain this through the example above.

In this position, the queen is at b7 attacking the black king. The black king cannot protect or run away from here. However, the king can do a capture move from here.

The black king can easily capture the queen from here and save itself from checkmate.
However, if we make little changes in the arrangement of this board.

Now the black king has no place to run away, neither can it protect itself nor it can capture the queen. Because now the queen is being protected by the white king. Therefore there is no way that the black king can now attack the queen. This brings the black king in a checkmate situation. Now there is no way that it can save itself. Hence now this would be called a checkmate and it is game over.

You can set many different examples on your chess board to better explain the concept to the kids to make it more interesting for them. This online chess session is extremely helpful for kids and can be used as chess lessons for beginners.
