Solving Percent Problems - [6-3-19]
Solving Percent Problems - [6-3-19] Teacherflix 10 Views • 1 year ago

View more at www.MathAndScience.com. In this lesson, you will learn how to solve percent problems that you are likely to encounter in everyday situations. A percent is expression a fraction when the denominator is equal to 100. The word "percent" means "per 100". A typical problem might ask that 6 is what percentage of 12. In order to solve this, we need to set up a proportion, where we solve for the numerator of the fraction, which we will then circle as the percentage for our final answer. To solve these problems, we will also learn to solve equations and use the rules of algebra to find the final answer.

8th grade on Khan Academy: 8th grade is all about tackling the meat of algebra and getting exposure to some of the foundational concepts in geometry. If you get this stuff (and you should because you're incredibly persistent), the rest of your life will be easy. Okay, maybe not your whole life, but at least your mathematical life. Seriously, if you really get the equations and functions stuff we cover here, most of high school will feel intuitive, even relaxing. (Content was selected for this grade level based on a typical curriculum in the United States.)

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

Unsolved Mathematical Problems for K-12
Unsolved Mathematical Problems for K-12 Teacherflix 6 Views • 1 year ago

The above are candidate problems. Teachers and mathematicians are gathering in November 2013 to select the final set of thirteen unsolved problems. The results are here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV5-wMGRM3g&feature=share&list=PLSrbLTVLJpchKVD0uUOEa2S-eSK9a3Kxp

When: November 15-17 2013
Where: Banff International Research Station

The conference will also discuss whether the $1,000,000 rewards are a good or bad idea. People have strong opinions on the topic. Some see no other practical way of getting these beautiful problems the exposure they need to inspire students worldwide. However, there are problems:

1) The joy of learning for its own sake may be compromised if the ulterior motive of a cash reward gets into the classroom.

2) The Clay Mathematics Institute released the seven $1,000,000 Millenium problems in 2000. Their purpose is to inspire mathematicians and the problems are tough to understand for non-mathematicians. Here is the problem... Nick Woodhouse says that the Clay Mathematics Institute gets about six wrong solutions every day! We need a different mechanism for dealing with "solutions" so we are not inundated.

3) The system that is set up must also try to minimize legal challenges. Again, the Clay Mathematics Institute has had its fair share of bad experiences here.

______________________________________

For those coming to the November 2013 conference... If you are able, think of some unsolved problems that may be understood by a typical classroom of students. The educators at the conference will help place these into the curriculum and develop them so every child experiences both moments of success and moments of struggle. We need to deliver a sense of accomplishment for all children as they come to understand and work on the unsolved problem.

For example, one potential grade 4 problem is the Collatz (3N+1) conjecture. This unsolved conjecture can be paired with the (3N-1) conjecture which is consistently solved by all grade 4 classrooms:
http://youtu.be/R4oINmqHXVY

Here are other potential unsolved problems:

Kindergarten: Packing Squares (Erdős and Graham, 1975)
Grade 1: No-Thee-in-a-Line (Henry Dudeney, 1917)
Grade 2: Sum-Free Partitions (Issai Schur, 1916)
Grade 3: Graceful Tree Conjecture (Ringel, Kotzig & Rosa, 1967)
Grade 4: Collatz Conjecture (Lothar Collatz, 1937)
Grade 5: Play Perudo Perfectly (Atahualpa & Pizarro, 1530s)
Grade 6: RSA Cipher (Rivest, Shamir & Aldeman, 1978)
Grade 7: Egyptian Fraction problem ???
Grade 8: Problem using the Pythagorean Theorem ???
Grade 9: Exponents problem or Three-Body-Problem (D'Alembert & Clairaut, 1747) ???
Grade 10: Inscribed Square Jordan Curve (Otto Toeplitz 1911)
Grade 11: Solutions to x^2 + y^2 + z^2 = 3xyz (Markoff, 1879) ???
Grade 12: ??? (The Sudoku problem on the video above has been solved.)

Here is a tentative list of criteria that you might consider in thinking about suitable unsolved problems: http://www.mathpickle.com/K-12/Criteria.html

Welcome to the Complete K12 Essentials Youtube channel!

_________________ABOUT_____________________
Complete K12 essentials Youtube channel was created to offer parents and teachers an online augmentation or alternative when public schools are not available. The need for standard curriculum that can be delivered via the internet became obvious during the pandemic of 2020. Teachers and school districts were left to create lesson plans and somehow connect with the students with very little time. The challenge was to give each child a method to connect with teachers and class mates to simulate a natural learning environment.

Although we are still building our library of video lessons, you can use our videos to create lesson plans, review standardized material, introduce building blocks and drills, as well as assigning tests and quizzes on limited videos, such as vocabulary.

We are building videos that will serve all students from kindergarten through the 12th grade. Recently launched on June 21st, 2020 our goal is to provide videos that will serve as a resource for those teaching or those looking to cover important standardized curriculum. We believe that access to a solid foundation of knowledge should be available to everyone who chooses to seek it.

Many offerings online lean on animation to capture a child’s attention, which to a certain extent works, but they lose interest rapidly and the opportunities for learning are significantly reduced. This is especially true when the child has no obligation to retain the material or accountability to a teacher.

Navigating through the material suitable for each grade level is a difficult task at best, so we have created the “SAFE LEARNING PLACE” logo and apply it to all of our videos to show you our dedication to providing good learning material that can be trusted across our whole channel.

The curriculum will cover Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Technology, Music, Art, Health and Fitness, Foreign Languages, Life Skills, Career training, History and Law.
