Algebra II on Khan Academy: Your studies in algebra 1 have built a solid foundation from which you can explore linear equations, inequalities, and functions. In algebra 2 we build upon that foundation and not only extend our knowledge of algebra 1, but slowly become capable of tackling the BIG questions of the universe. We'll again touch on systems of equations, inequalities, and functions...but we'll also address exponential and logarithmic functions, logarithms, imaginary and complex numbers, conic sections, and matrices. Don't let these big words intimidate you. We're on this journey with you!

What Is an Asteroid? | Asteroids for kids | Learn all about asteroids
What Is an Asteroid? | Asteroids for kids | Learn all about asteroids Teacherflix 7 Views • 2 years ago

What is the difference between a comet, a meteor, and an asteroid? In this video, you and your kids will learn specifically about asteroids. Sometimes when you look at the night sky, you will see lots of lights in the sky. But not all of those shiny spots are starts. A few of them are planets. And a couple of them are actually asteroids!

Asteroids can be as small as a speck of dust, and they can be hundreds of miles in diameter! They are made of mostly rock, but they might contain clay or silicon, or even metal. Those metals are usually nickel or iron, but some asteroids contain precious metals like gold and platinum.

The asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter contains most of the asteroids in our solar system. There are around a million asteroids that are over half a mile long! And there are millions more that are smaller. Ceres is the biggest asteroid in the belt, maybe even the solar system. It is so big that scientists consider it a dwarf planet! While most asteroids can't be seen from Earth, Vesta can be. Vesta is the second largest asteroid in the belt, but it is the brightest one in the sky. If it's in the right position, you can see it with the naked eye!

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about asteroids! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about asteroids, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Laws and Rules for Kids | What is the difference between a rule and a law?
Laws and Rules for Kids | What is the difference between a rule and a law? Teacherflix 24 Views • 2 years ago

What is the difference between a rule and a law? What would life be like if neither rules nor laws existed? In Laws and Rules for Kids, you will discover the answer to these and other questions you have about these concepts. They have similarities, such as the fact that both exist to keep people safe. But they are also different in a few ways. For instance, if you break a law, it may have more serious consequences than breaking a rule does.

A law is created by the government, and the public enforces these laws. A rule relates to behaviors that we should follow in certain situations or places. Breaking a law and breaking a rule both lead to consequences. If you litter, which is breaking the law, you might have to pay a fine. If you throw a ball inside your house even though there is a rule not to, you might break something and get in trouble.

In general, rules are used by smaller groups, like families, schools, teams, and business. Laws are used in much larger groups, like cities, states, and countries. Individuals create rules for different places and situations, such as parents in a family or teachers in a classroom. On the other hand, laws must be voted on by people in government offices or by the citizens.

Again, the consequences or punishments for breaking rules are not as severe as those for breaking laws. If you break rules at school, you might have to skip recess or miss out on certain activities or privileges. If you break a law, you could pay a fine, go to court, do community service, or even serve jail time! Watch the video to see if you can tell the difference between a rule and a law.

Financial Literacy—Calculating Interest | Learn an easy way to calculate interest
Financial Literacy—Calculating Interest | Learn an easy way to calculate interest Teacherflix 5 Views • 2 years ago

Part of becoming financially literate is understanding how to calculate interest. In this video, your kids or students will learn what exactly interest is and how they can calculate it. Interest is an amount of money that you either pay or earn. Whether you pay or earn depends on the situation. If you borrow money, you have to pay interest. If you save money at a bank, you will earn interest.

There are a few terms you should be familiar with. The principal is the amount of money you start with that you are borrowing or spending. Another term to know is rate. The rate is the percentage you are charged (if borrowing money from a bank/company) or paid (if saving money in a bank). You will be able to use the rate and principal to determine the interest using an equation: Interest = Principal x Rate x Time (years).

The video goes through a helpful example scenario to walk you through calculating interest when saving money at a bank. In this case, Frankie Finance is starting with $200. The rate will be 0.15. Based on the equation, Frankie will earn $30 dollars per year in interest. Next, you can follow another scenario in which Frankie borrows money and owes $30 extra a year! The equation is the same regardless of whether or not you're borrowing or saving.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about these important skills! If you want even more information, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!
