Student teams act as engineers and brainstorm, design, create and test their ideas for packaging to protect a raw egg shipped in a 9 x 12-in envelope. They follow the steps of the engineering design process and aim for a successful solution with no breakage, low weight, minimal materials and recycled/reused materials. Students come to understand the multi-faceted engineering considerations associated with the packaging of items to preserve, market and safely transport goods.

Through Internet research, patent research, standards and codes research, user interviews (if possible) and other techniques (idea web, reverse engineering), students further develop the context for their design challenge. In subsequent activities, the design teams use this body of knowledge about the problem to generate product design ideas. (Note: Conduct this activity in the context of a design project that students are working on, which could be a challenge determined by the teacher, brainstormed with the class, or the example project challenge provided [to design a prosthetic arm that can perform a mechanical function]. This activity is Step 2 in a series of seven steps that guide students through the engineering design process.)

The Bicycle: Great inventions that changed history.

Hello friends! Welcome to a new HAppy Learning Video! Today, in our section great inventions of history, we’re going to get to know… the bicycle.

The bicycle is one of the most fun means of transport there is! Also, it is very ecological, and very healthy! Since when we ride a bicycle, we do physical exercise!
But… do you know who, and when the bicycle was invented? No? Well, let’s find out!

The truth is, that alike many other inventions, the bicycle was invented in various phases and it was various people who intervened in its evolution until reaching the bicycle we know today!

Here you can see the first bicycle in history! It was invented by Karl Drais in 1817 but, it doesn’t look a lot like contemporary bikes, it didn’t have pedals and you had to push it with feet on the ground.

In 1861, the Frenchman Ernest Michaux thought of putting pedals on the front wheel, but because it didn’t balance correctly, people fell off and his idea didn’t succeed. But it was useful so in 1873, James Starley, an English inventor, would manufacture a bicycle with the front wheel a lot bigger than the back one. Although the falls from so high up were dangerous, he made it easier to drive them, so in 1873, Thomas Steven commenced the first trip around the world. He took three years to finish it.

In 1885, John Kemp Starley, James Starley’s nephew invented a safe bicycle. Because it had breaks, and was a lot lower, falls were less frequent and less dangerous. Exactly, it was more secure… he had created a contemporary bicycle. From this moment on, the bicycle became famous throughout the whole world. And it started to be used for Cirque shows, to travel or just to do sports. But… the bicycle’s history hasn’t ended, there are still new bikes being invented, like mountain bikes, race bikes, electric or some which won’t move no matter how fast you pedal, like at the gym… There are a lot of curious bicycles, like all of these… It’s clear that the bicycle is an invention which runs smoothly! So everyone let’s ride a bike!

What are you waiting for? Eclipses

Hello friends. In this educational video for kids we are going to learn about eclipses. There are two types of eclipses, a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse, but first of all, do you know what an eclipse is?

An eclipse occurs when an astronomical object is temporarily obscured. Sometimes the Earth is placed between the sun and the moon and other times the moon is situated between the Earth and the sun. These are eclipses… but let’s investigate it better.

The lunar eclipse is when the Earth is situated between the moon and the sun making the Earth block out the sun’s rays which would be shining on the moon, creating a shadow and darkening it. This phenomenon allows us to see the moon in a reddish color…almost as if it were bleeding.

Lunar eclipses are quite frequent and can be seen from any part of the world at night time. They last various hours and can be different types, though the most frequent ones are the partial lunar eclipse and the total lunar eclipse.

When there is an eclipse and it looks as if someone has taken a bite out of the moon, it is a partial eclipse, and when there is an eclipse and one can see the whole moon, it is a total eclipse. Easy don’t you think?

By the way, to observe a lunar eclipse one doesn’t need anything special, a normal telescope or binoculars would do.

Solar eclipses only occur when there is a new moon, and is seen when the moon is in between the Earth and the sun. The moon hides all the suns light or at least part of it.

Solar eclipses can be of different types: total, partial or annular.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon hides all of the suns light and the sun’s face disappears behind the moon. In the middle of the day, it would seem as if night has fallen. The sky darkens and stars appear. Many animals, think it’s night time and go to sleep, and nocturnal animals such as this owl, begin their day, actually their night, not understanding that in a short time the sun will reappear.

Partial solar eclipses occur when the moon comes between the Earth and the sun, but not completely, leaving part of the sun visible. The day becomes slightly darker and the sun resembles a cookie with a chunk missing.

An annular solar eclipse occurs when the moon hides only the middle part of the sun. It is seen as a black circle surrounding a bright ring. It looks like a ring, doesn’t it?

By the way and this is really important, it is very dangerous to observe solar eclipses without special eye protection. Please remember this as it is extremely harmful.
Well now we know a little bit more about eclipses…don’t you think it is fascinating learning new things?

Goodbye friends, we hope you enjoyed this educational video for children about eclipses. Don’t forget to subscribe to Happy Learning TV, so you don’t miss any of our videos.

Hi, I’m Earth 🌎 and I need your help! Every day, we use a lot of energy ⚡, but not all of it is good for the planet. Some types of energy pollute and make me sick, while others are clean and renewable.

🔋 Dirty Energy: Comes from coal, oil, and gas, and pollutes the air.
☀️ Clean Energy: Like solar and wind power, doesn’t pollute and never runs out.

💡 How can you help?
✅ Walk or ride your bike to school 🚶🚴‍♂️
✅ Use the stairs instead of the elevator 🏃‍♂️
✅ Take showers instead of baths 🚿

If we all make small changes, we can protect nature and the environment 🌿. You can make a difference! 💙

Did you know that different parts of the world are called different things according to the areas properties and wildlife? In this video, you and your kids will learn about several types of habitats that are found all around the globe. You'll learn about the driest places, the wettest places, the coldest places, the tallest places, and more!

First up is grasslands. These areas are full of tall grass and not a lot of trees. You can find them on every continent except Antarctica. Types of grasslands include prairies and savannas. Deserts are next. Even though most people think deserts are always hot, this isn't actually true. Some are very cold. These places are defined as having very little rain or being incredibly dry. Not a lot of animals or plants can survive the desert habitat.

Next you'll learn about a few types of forests: rainforests, temperate forests, and coniferous forests. Rainforests receive rain all year around and are home to more animals than all the other habitats combined!. Temperate forests are ones with trees that lose their leaves in the winter or remain green all year around. Coniferous forests are the forests that have the tallest trees in the world. They can survive extremely cold temperatures.

Speaking of cold, mountain habitats are much cooler because they are so high up. They receive less oxygen. Polar regions are likewise extremely cold. In fact, they're the coldest places on Earth. There are only two polar regions—the Arctic at the top of the globe and the Antarctic at the bottom. Very few types of animals can live here, such as polar bears and whales.

Water habitats exist as well, both freshwater and saltwater bodies are home to habitats like coral reefs and oceans. Freshwater habitats can be found nearly anywhere in the world. Coral reefs are usually around tropical areas of the globe. The ocean is the largest animal habitat in the world. I bet you can guess why! And believe it or not, cities and farms are their own habitats as well.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about several types of habitats that we have on Earth! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about habitats, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Have you ever heard someone explain that force equals mass times acceleration? This equation (F = M x A) is Newton's second law of motion. In this Newton's Second Law of Motion video for kids, you and your students will learn about force, mass, and acceleration and how each of these work together.

The "f" in the equation stands for force. Force, as you will learn, can be balanced or unbalanced. If you are playing tug of war, for instance, who will win? The answer depends on the amount of force on each side of the rope. If your side has more mass, then the amount of force goes up, and you will win! However, if your side has less mass, you will lose because the other team will have more force.

Mass is what the "m" in the equation stands for. Mass is essentially the amount of matter something has, which is what everything is made up of. For example, an elephant has far more mass than an insect. But just because something is bigger, it doesn't mean it has more mass. Compare a basketball and a bowling ball. The basketball is bigger than a bowling ball, but the bowling ball has more mass than the basketball. After all, a basketball is filled with air, which definitely does not have a lot of mass!

The "a" stands for acceleration in the force equation. Think of when you press down a gas pedal or the pedal of your bicycle. When you do so, you increase your acceleration. Acceleration means the change in speed or direction. This also applies when you, say, ride a skateboard down a ramp. You accelerate as you roll down the ramp.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about Newton's second law of motion! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about the laws of motion, full of activities, worksheets, and more!
