Do you know why the heart is so important? In The Human Heart for Kids video, you will learn that the heart, apart from pumping blood, also carries lots of other important things throughout the body. The heart is an organ made up mostly of muscle, and it plays a vital role in keeping you and your body healthy and strong.
The human heart is one the most important organs of the body that is essential for survival. It is part of the circulatory system, which is the body system that carries blood and other substances to and from the heart. The other main parts of the circulatory system are blood vessels, which include veins, arteries, and capillaries. And the heart beats automatically because it's controlled by the autonomic nervous system. In 24 hours, your heart averages about 115,000 beats per day!
So how does the heart work exactly? Well, the heart consists of left and right ventricles at the bottom and left and right atriums at the top. Blood pushes through the atriums into the ventricles on each side of the heart through little "gates" every time the heart beats. These gates basically help ensure the blood flows in the right direction. The blood travels through the different vessels throughout the rest of the body. You can think of blood vessels as little train tracks that carry blood to different parts of the body. The trip for a single drop of blood throughout the body takes only about a minute.
Blood carries oxygen, food, minerals, and vitamins as well, and all these things help your body move, grow, and make repairs. In fact, they even help you think! The stuff in your blood that the body doesn't need gets set out as waste through the lungs, kidneys, and liver. To keep your heart healthy, there are a few things you can do. Exercising will help strengthen the muscles of your heart. Eating fruits and vegetables also helps keep your arteries clear. Drinking plenty of water is also essential because water makes up about 83% of the heart. If you don't have enough water, your heart can become less and less healthy. Finally, remember to move around. Moving around helps both your body and your mind.
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about how your heart works! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about the heart, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Educational Videos and songs for Kids. In this video we’re going to learn about the birds.
They are so diverse, and there are so many colors and shapes, it's fun to learn about them. For example, this tiny little hummingbird doesn’t look anything like this huge ostrich. And these penguins don’t look much like this peacock with its large fan-shaped tail. Well, they may not look alike, but they’re all birds, and have many things in common.
Birds are oviparous... which as you know, means that they reproduce by laying eggs. The females lay the eggs in nests, in the rocks... or on the ground... And with the heat of their bodies, they incubate the eggs until the little chicks hatch.
Birds don’t have teeth, they have beaks or bills... And these can be very different, depending on what that species of bird feeds on.
They breathe with their lungs, that are connected to... bags full of air... called air sacs... and these help birds to fly. Also, nature, which is very clever, has made their bones hollow, so they weigh very little, and because of this it’s much easier for them to fly.
The skin of birds is covered with feathers: these protect them from the cold and heat. Birds have four limbs, the back ones are legs... and the front ones are wings. Together, the wings and feathers are essential for them to be able to fly... and in some cases... so they can swim.
Birds are terrestrial and most of them can fly. Can you think of any birds that can’t fly? That’s right!!! Penguins and ostriches are two species of birds that cannot fly.
Birds have four types of feathers: those that cover the whole body; flight feathers in the wings that help them to fly; down feathers, which cover the chest and belly and maintain the body at a constant temperature; and tail feathers that help guide the birds’ body like a rudder on a boat.
Birds can be classified into several groups, according to what they eat: herbivores feed on plants and grasses – their beaks are short and strong, and can crush seeds and grains. When they only eat grains, they are called granivores.
Carnivorous birds hunt and eat other animals, using their strong, curved beaks. Within the group of carnivores there are insectivores, that only eat insects, and piscivores that only feed on fish. These birds have pointed beaks that are long and sharp to help them catch the fish. Remember - birds that eat fish are called piscivorous.
The last group - omnivorous birds - includes pigeons and hens, and they eat almost anything.
So remember: birds are oviparous, which means they reproduce by laying eggs; their mouths are beaks or bills and they breathe with their lungs; their skin is covered with feathers; and depending on the food they eat, they can be herbivorous... carnivorous... or omnivorous.
So, now you know a lot more about birds.

The Bicycle: Great inventions that changed history.
Hello friends! Welcome to a new HAppy Learning Video! Today, in our section great inventions of history, we’re going to get to know… the bicycle.
The bicycle is one of the most fun means of transport there is! Also, it is very ecological, and very healthy! Since when we ride a bicycle, we do physical exercise!
But… do you know who, and when the bicycle was invented? No? Well, let’s find out!
The truth is, that alike many other inventions, the bicycle was invented in various phases and it was various people who intervened in its evolution until reaching the bicycle we know today!
Here you can see the first bicycle in history! It was invented by Karl Drais in 1817 but, it doesn’t look a lot like contemporary bikes, it didn’t have pedals and you had to push it with feet on the ground.
In 1861, the Frenchman Ernest Michaux thought of putting pedals on the front wheel, but because it didn’t balance correctly, people fell off and his idea didn’t succeed. But it was useful so in 1873, James Starley, an English inventor, would manufacture a bicycle with the front wheel a lot bigger than the back one. Although the falls from so high up were dangerous, he made it easier to drive them, so in 1873, Thomas Steven commenced the first trip around the world. He took three years to finish it.
In 1885, John Kemp Starley, James Starley’s nephew invented a safe bicycle. Because it had breaks, and was a lot lower, falls were less frequent and less dangerous. Exactly, it was more secure… he had created a contemporary bicycle. From this moment on, the bicycle became famous throughout the whole world. And it started to be used for Cirque shows, to travel or just to do sports. But… the bicycle’s history hasn’t ended, there are still new bikes being invented, like mountain bikes, race bikes, electric or some which won’t move no matter how fast you pedal, like at the gym… There are a lot of curious bicycles, like all of these… It’s clear that the bicycle is an invention which runs smoothly! So everyone let’s ride a bike!

The Washoe County school district in Reno, Nev., has been way ahead of most other districts in its approach to social-emotional learning, especially in measuring students' SEL skills, which are part of the district’s accountability system. Education Week, which first reported on Washoe’s SEL work in 2016, checked back in with the district this school year to learn how its work on social-emotional learning has been progressing. We visited high school classes that are pointedly about developing SEL skills such as coping with stress and the power of thought. Stephan Molder, an SEL teacher in Reno's Hug High School, says successful social-emotional learning starts with the adults in schools. He boils it down to this: "...It's all about building relationships with students. I never wreck the relationship, no matter what. I always try to save the relationship first.”

Lesson Title: Divisibility Rules
File: Interactive Math PowerPoint presentation
Grade: 6
Dividing by 1:
All numbers are divisible by 1.
Divisible by 2:
All even numbers are divisible by 2.
Even numbers are numbers that end with either 2, 4, 6, 8, or 0.
Divisible by 3:
Add up the digits of the number.
If that number is divisible by 3, then the original number is.
If your sum is still a big number, continue to add the digits.
Dividing by 4:
If the last 2 digits together are divisible by 4.
Dividing by 5:
If the number ends in 5 or 0.
Dividing by 6:
If the number is divisible by 2 and 3.
Divisible by 7:
There is no specific rule. It can be done through manual division.
Divisible by 8:
If the last three digits are divisible by 8.
If the number is divisible by 2, then by 2 again, and then by 2 again.
Divisible by 9;
The same as dividing by 3.
Add up all the digits.
If that number is divisible by 9 then it is divisible by 9.
Dividing by 10:
If the number ends with a 0.

Probability and statistics on Khan Academy: We dare you to go through a day in which you never consider or use probability. Did you check the weather forecast? Busted! Did you decide to go through the drive through lane vs walk in? Busted again! We are constantly creating hypotheses, making predictions, testing, and analyzing. Our lives are full of probabilities! Statistics is related to probability because much of the data we use when determining probable outcomes comes from our understanding of statistics. In these tutorials, we will cover a range of topics, some which include: independent events, dependent probability, combinatorics, hypothesis testing, descriptive statistics, random variables, probability distributions, regression, and inferential statistics. So buckle up and hop on for a wild ride. We bet you're going to be challenged AND love it!
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. Cosmology & Astronomy on Khan Academy: The Earth is huge, but it is tiny compared to the Sun (which is super huge). But the Sun is tiny compared to the solar system which is tiny compared to the distance to the next star. Oh, did we mention that there are over 100 billion stars in our galaxy (which is about 100,000 light years in diameter) which is one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in just the observable universe (which might be infinite for all we know). Don't feel small. We find it liberating. Your everyday human stresses are nothing compared to this enormity that we are a part of. Enjoy the fact that we get to be part of this vastness!
