Precalculus on Khan Academy: You may think that precalculus is simply the course you take before calculus. You would be right, of course, but that definition doesn't mean anything unless you have some knowledge of what calculus is. Let's keep it simple, shall we? Calculus is a conceptual framework which provides systematic techniques for solving problems. These problems are appropriately applicable to analytic geometry and algebra. Therefore....precalculus gives you the background for the mathematical concepts, problems, issues and techniques that appear in calculus, including trigonometry, functions, complex numbers, vectors, matrices, and others. There you have it ladies and gentlemen....an introduction to precalculus!
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

Cosmology & Astronomy on Khan Academy: The Earth is huge, but it is tiny compared to the Sun (which is super huge). But the Sun is tiny compared to the solar system which is tiny compared to the distance to the next star. Oh, did we mention that there are over 100 billion stars in our galaxy (which is about 100,000 light years in diameter) which is one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in just the observable universe (which might be infinite for all we know). Don't feel small. We find it liberating. Your everyday human stresses are nothing compared to this enormity that we are a part of. Enjoy the fact that we get to be part of this vastness!

Algebra II on Khan Academy: Your studies in algebra 1 have built a solid foundation from which you can explore linear equations, inequalities, and functions. In algebra 2 we build upon that foundation and not only extend our knowledge of algebra 1, but slowly become capable of tackling the BIG questions of the universe. We'll again touch on systems of equations, inequalities, and functions...but we'll also address exponential and logarithmic functions, logarithms, imaginary and complex numbers, conic sections, and matrices. Don't let these big words intimidate you. We're on this journey with you!

Today, Caroline and Sophie start Circle Time with a fun "Show & Tell" featuring character art we’ve received from kids. Great work, everyone! Learn how to draw Sandy the Dingo from Khan Academy Kids with Kim Ferrari, our lead animator. An animator is someone who draws, and makes those drawings move. Draw with Kim as she explains Sandy’s structure and illustrates the techniques that create her face. Practice drawing to make your own Sandy.
Are your kids ready to draw Sandy? Submit your drawing here: http://khan.co/KhanKids-SubmitYourArt. For more Show and Tell submission ideas, check out our list here: http://khan.co/KhanKids-ShowAndTell.

Learn to Play Chess - What Is Check | Kids Academy
One of the basic knowledge of chess includes the understanding of check and checkmate. In this tutorial let’s focus on checking more and learning to play chess for beginners.
In very simple words, in chess the word check means that the king is under attack and is being threatened by any of the characters on the chessboard. The king is in danger and needs to save himself from getting captured. Since in chess, we don’t capture the king so at the turn before when the king would be captured we say that it's checkmate and the game is over.
Now if you are asking why the only king gets the check, well simply because the king is the most important character on the chessboard. He is the leader of the army and hence the king must be kept safe from any attacks. The main objective of the whole chess game is to protect your own king and attack and surround the opponent's king until it is checkmate and the opponent cannot save their king.
From here the rook can directly attack the black king and hence the king is now in danger, which in chess words means that the king is in check. In the next turn, the white rook will easily capture the black king.
The black king now needs to save himself. The king can save itself using any of the three strategies, either it can capture/attack, it can protect itself, or it can run away. This strategy is explained in another tutorial on the check and checkmate further.
So now you see that the king can be in danger by any of the characters and needs to be saved. You can use further examples to explain even more to your kid.
The more the kid understands the game the more interested he/she would feel in it otherwise it would just become a boring lecture for them to make sure that it is interesting to the kids. Before you teach them first learn how to play chess for kids so that you can explain to them by coming down at their level of understanding.
