Precalculus on Khan Academy: You may think that precalculus is simply the course you take before calculus. You would be right, of course, but that definition doesn't mean anything unless you have some knowledge of what calculus is. Let's keep it simple, shall we? Calculus is a conceptual framework which provides systematic techniques for solving problems. These problems are appropriately applicable to analytic geometry and algebra. Therefore....precalculus gives you the background for the mathematical concepts, problems, issues and techniques that appear in calculus, including trigonometry, functions, complex numbers, vectors, matrices, and others. There you have it ladies and gentlemen....an introduction to precalculus!
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. Trigonometry on Khan Academy: Big, fancy word, right? Don't be fooled. Looking at the prefix, tri-, you could probably assume that trigonometry ("trig" as it's sometimes called) has something to do with triangles. You would be right! Trig is the study of the properties of triangles. Why is it important? It's used in measuring precise distances, particularly in industries like satellite systems and sciences like astronomy. It's not only space, however. Trig is present in architecture and music, too. Now you may wonder...how is knowing the measurement and properties of triangles relevant to music?? THAT is a great question. Maybe you'll learn the answer from us in these tutorials!

Geometry on Khan Academy: We are surrounded by space. And that space contains lots of things. And these things have shapes. In geometry we are concerned with the nature of these shapes, how we define them, and what they teach us about the world at large--from math to architecture to biology to astronomy (and everything in between). Learning geometry is about more than just taking your medicine ("It's good for you!"), it's at the core of everything that exists--including you. Having said all that, some of the specific topics we'll cover include angles, intersecting lines, right triangles, perimeter, area, volume, circles, triangles, quadrilaterals, analytic geometry, and geometric constructions. Wow. That's a lot. To summarize: it's difficult to imagine any area of math that is more widely used than geometry.

How many active volcanoes do you think there are in the world? What makes a volcano active versus dormant or extinct? In What Is a Volcano? for Kids, you and your students will learn the answers to the questions and more. Plus, you can conduct an experiment where you make your own model volcano!
A volcano is a mountain made from cooled lava, ash, or other material from previous eruptions. Some even exist on the ocean floor. There are over 1500 active volcanoes in the world today. Every day, 15 to 20 volcanoes erupt somewhere. In the United States, there are active volcanoes in Hawaii, Alaska, California, Oregon, and Washington. Movements of the earth's crust cause volcanic eruptions.
What's the difference between magma and lava? Magma is located beneath the earth's surface. It is made of liquid or semi-liquid rock. After gas bubbles inside the magma expand and build up the pressure in the volcano, the volcano erupts. Once the magma escapes the volcano, we call it lava. The more often a volcano erupts, the larger it becomes as the lava cools and builds up the volcano.
Keep watching to follow along with a fun experiment to see how volcanoes work. You can pause the video when prompted to make sure you gather all the necessary supplies (and people). For more detailed instructions, check out the link below to our Earthquakes and Volcanoes STEM lesson plan. Hope you enjoy!
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about volcanoes! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about these natural features, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Dinosaurs for Kids is a fun and comprehensive look at dinosaur history. In this video we highlight the various kinds of dinosaurs, talk about how they receive their names, famous dinosaur fossils, and we talk about the people who find dinosaur fossils: Paleontologists.
We think that one of the most fascinating creatures to ever roam the Earth was the dinosaur. You most likely have heard of dinosaurs, seen pictures of them on TV or the Internet, or may have seen their bones in a museum. Dinosaurs are an interesting group of animals that no longer exist, meaning they are extinct. Dinosaurs evolved, meaning they changed, over millions of years.
In this dinosaur for kids video we also talk about how the dinosaurs’ extinction took place about 66 million years ago and 75% of all life on Earth died. There are many theories or guesses as to what may have happened leading to the extinction. They include worldwide volcanic eruptions, changes in the Earth’s climate, or perhaps a meteorite from space smashing into the Earth.

What would it be like to be a king or queen as a kid? That's what life was like for King Tutankhamun, or King Tut! He was a pharaoh of ancient Egypt in the 1300s BCE. Historians believe he became the pharaoh, or king, of Egypt around the age of nine. And his reign was pretty short, lasting only about 10 years.
The ancient Egyptians were very religious and believed their pharaohs were earthly gods who communicated with the other gods. Their beliefs focused a lot on the afterlife, and the people believed people passed through to the afterlife in the same form as when they were alive. They developed burial processes to preserve the body for its afterlife. This process is known as mummification.
King Tut was mummified and buried in a beautiful tomb like any other pharaoh. Tombs included other items the pharaoh might need in addition to just the body, such as food, jewelry, weapons, art, and even pets. The reason we know so much about King Tut specifically is that archaeologists who discovered his tomb in 1922 found the tomb completely untouched. There were over 5,000 artifacts! Because the items included in a tomb were personal items, the archaeologists studied the artifacts to recreate King Tut's life!
The boy king died pretty young at about 18 or 19 years old. There are several theories. Some historians believe he was murdered by his advisors who wanted to seize his power. Others think his own family killed him. Thanks to modern DNA testing and physical evidence, however, most scientists believe that the young pharaoh died because of poor health.
