Teachers are the most important factor in helping children succeed academically, but it’s principals who hire, support, and develop teachers. Principals see quality teaching through an organizational lens; they can support teachers by pairing them with a mentor teacher, creating opportunities for them to observe classrooms in other schools, provide direct and helpful feedback, as well as organize teacher teams to empower educators to study data. Having good principals is also considered the most cost-effective lever to improve student learning at scale.

“What’s X?” is a card game in which 2 players construct equations which is equal to the variable x who ever has no number cards remaining wins. The concepts this game features are algebra and expression & equations, the game helps kids understand these concepts in a fun way.

You better watch out—St. Nick isn’t the only one coming to town! Meet the mythological creature that gives weight to the saying “naughty or nice,” Krampus.

Half-goat and half-demon, Krampus is said to have Pagan origins and appears in Austrian, German, and Czech folklore. On December 5, also known as Krampusnacht (Krampus Night), Krampus travels alongside his better and nicer counterpart, St. Nicholas. The dynamic duo visits children throughout the night, and as St. Nick awards good children, Krampus punishes them. In some myths, he takes them to the underworld in a sack and saves them for a midnight snack. In others, he swats them like a piñata. Coal doesn’t seem so bad now, does it?

Nowadays, you’ll only see Krampus on the big screen or in traditions like Krampuslauf, where people run amok dressed as the creature and scare children. And if you see him elsewhere, you probably didn’t make the nice list. Happy holidays!

Students are tasked with designing a special type of hockey stick for a sled hockey team—a sport designed for individuals with physical disabilities to play ice hockey. Using the engineering design process, students act as material engineers to create durable hockey sticks using a variety of materials. The stick designs will contain different interior structures that can hold up during flexure (or bending) tests. Following flexure testing, the students can use their results to iterate upon their design and create a second stick.
This engineering curriculum aligns to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

To gain a better understanding of the roles and functions of components of the human respiratory system and our need for clean air, students construct model lungs that include a diaphragm and chest cavity. They see how air moving in and out of the lungs coincides with diaphragm movement. Then student teams design and build a prototype face mask pollution filter. They use their model lungs to evaluate their prototypes to design requirements.

Students explore how pendulums work and why they are useful in everyday applications. In a hands-on activity, they experiment with string length, pendulum weight and angle of release. In an associated literacy activity, students explore the mechanical concept of rhythm, based on the principle of oscillation, in a broader biological and cultural context — in dance and sports, poetry and other literary forms, and communication in general.
