In which John Green teaches you about the war that was supposed to end all wars. Instead, it solved nothing and set the stage for the world to be back at war just a couple of decades later. As an added bonus, World War I changed the way people look at the world, and normalized cynicism and irony. John will teach you how the assassination of an Austrian Archduke kicked off a new kind of war that involved more nations and more people than any war that came before. New technology like machine guns, airplanes, tanks, and poison gas made killing more efficient than ever. Trench warfare and modern weapons led to battles in which tens of thousands of soldiers were killed in a day, with no ground gained for either side. World War I washed away the last vestiges of 19th-century Romanticism and paved the way for the 20th-century modernism that we all know and find to be cold and off-putting. While there may not be much upside to WWI, at least it inspired George M. Cohan to write the awesome song, "Over There."

Students take the concept of etch-a-sketch a step further. Using iron filings, they begin visualizing magnetic field lines. To do so, they use a compass to read the direction of the magnet's magnetic field. Then, as they rotate the filings about the magnet, they observe the behavior of iron filings near the magnet. Finally, students study the behavior of iron filings suspended in mineral oil, which displays the magnetic field in three dimensions.

In 1958, farmers digging for bat poop in a Chinese cave stumbled on something way strangerโ€”a fossilized skull that would baffle scientists for decades. At first, experts thought it was a Neanderthal, but new micro-CT scans have revealed a twist: it doesnโ€™t fit neatly into Neanderthals, Homo sapiens, or even Homo erectus. Instead, Maba 1 is a mash-up of featuresโ€”part this, part that, and part โ€œwhat on Earth is that?โ€ The skullโ€™s brain size is surprisingly modern, but its structure is just too weird to belong to any known species. Some researchers now think it might represent a completely unknown human lineage that lived in Asia 300,000 years ago. Join us as we uncover the mystery of Maba 1 and what it tells us about our strange, twisted evolutionary story.

Students construct three-dimensional models of water catchment basins using everyday objects to form hills, mountains, valleys and water sources. They experiment to see where rain travels and collects, and survey water pathways to see how they can be altered by natural and human activities. Students discuss how engineers design structures that impact water collection, as well as systems that clean and distribute water.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Learn how to graph linear equations written in standard form. When given a linear equation in standard form, to graph the equation, we first rewrite the linear equation in slope intercept form, (i.e. in the form y = mx + c, where m is the slope and c is the y-intercept). Next we plot the y-intercept and using the slope, we can determine the rise and the run of the required line and then be able to plot the next point from the y-intercept. Finally, we draw a straight line passing through the two plotted points.

Alternatively, we can determine the x-intercept and the y-intercept of the standard form linear equation by subtituting y = 0, then solve for x and substituting x = 0, then solve for y respectively. Recall that the x-intercept is the value of x when y = 0 and the y-intercept is the value of y when x = 0. After obtaining the values of the x-intercept and the y-intercept, we plot the points on the coordinate plane and then draw a line passing through the points.

A century is a pretty long period of time, so a lot can happen in those hundred years. Historians divide time into centuries and decades to make it easy to study events and other things from specific times in history. In 20th Century for Kids, you will learn about lots of different events, inventions, historical figures, and other things from the year 1901 through the year 2000 of American history.

The early years of the 20th century brought with it the first airplane from the Wright brothers, Oreo cookies, and the Spanish Influenza pandemic. Right after that global pandemic, scientists developed insulin and penicillin, which saved millions of lives. This is also when the Great Depression occurred, and many people lives and lifestyles changed drastically.

In the next few decades, Amelia Earhart took flight, the Monopoly board game made its debut, and the second World War began and ended. In addition, the time around the middle of the century introduced M&Ms and Cheerios to the world. Velcro, color TV, and seatbelts were all invented in the 1950s, and this is also when Charlie Brown, Disneyland, and McDonald's started.

One of the most significant decades is the 60s, which focused a lot of civil rights. This is also the decade during which man stepped on the moon, the first super bowl was held, and the Beatles became famous. The last few decades likewise brought about lots of interesting inventions, products, and events. For instance, the first Star Wars movie released in 1977, and the first Harry Potter book was published in 1997.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about many significant events, people, and inventions from the 20th century! If you want even more information, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

๐Ÿ‘‰ Learn how to add and subtract fractions whose denominators are not the same. Recall that when we want to add or subtract fractions having the same denominator, we add the numerators and retain the (common) denominator. This is different when the fractions have different denominators. When adding fractions with different denominators, we convert the fractions to equivalent fractions having the same denominator. This is achieved by finding the LCM of the different denominators (the least number that the denominators can divide without remainder). We then multiply the denominators by a number which will yield the LCM. You will also multiply the numerator by the same number with which you multiplied the denominator. Notice now that the fractions have the same denominator. We can now add or subtract the numerators retaining the common denominator.

Is it true that some animals cry?

Yes, itโ€™s true. Animals cry. A couple of years ago, zoologists which are people who study animals and their behavior, discovered that some animals, when they feel pain, scared or sad, also cryโ€ฆ like human beings.

Some animals cry for physiological reasons, like crocodiles, who always have to have humid eyes, or seagulls, who cry to eliminate salt from their organismโ€ฆ but there are animals who cry when they feel sad or in danger. Dolphins and elephants, cry uncontrollably when a friend of theirs dies. Seals and deer cry when theyโ€™re chased by a hunter and theyโ€™re very scared. And otters for example, when they separate from their babies. But there are many other animals which also cry,, like monkeys,, giraffes,, or bears.

Well, now we know that animals also cry, but it makes me very sad. To be happy, the best we can do is make others happy, people, and animals too!

Students investigate the weather from a systems approach, learning how individual parts of a system work together to create a final product. They learn how a barometer works to measure the Earth's air pressure by building a model using simple materials. Students analyze the changes in barometer measurements over time and compare those to actual weather conditions. They learn how to use a barometer to understand air pressure and predict real-world weather changes.

The main function of the circulatory system is to carry, through the blood, the nutrients to the cells of our body. It is formed by the heart, arteries and veins and its proper functioning is essential for us to have good health. I have a curiosity Do you know how much all the artery and veins would measure together, put in single file? They would measure 97,000 kilometres, which would be equivalent to almost two and a half laps to Earth, it's incredible, right?

The heart has the main role in making sure that the blood travels around the body. With its one hundred thousand pulsations per day it ensures that blood circulates throughout our body allowing it to distribute oxygen and nutrients into our cells.

We are going to start a journey through the circulatory system so we can understand it much better.

The journey of blood begins in the heart. With the pulsations of the heart the blood comes out through one of the great highways of the circulatory system called the Aorta.

From that moment, the blood flows through our body through many veins. It reaches the neck, head and brain through one side. From there, the blood continues to flow into our arms then through the aorta, around the thorax and abdomen and finally reaching both of our legs.

During this trip, the blood is delivering oxygen and nutrients to the cells through the capillary veins.

As this trip is circular, that is to say it has no end, the blood starts the trip back to the heart to regain nutrients and oxygen.
