There are a lot of interesting facts about you that people don't know. The same is true of every single person in history, including our presidents! In celebration of Presidents' Day, we are going to share a few interesting facts that you may not know about some of our past presidents. For instance, did you know President Lincoln was 6' 4" tall, making him the tallest president we've had? James Madison, on the other hand, was the shortest president, at only 5' 4" tall. All the other presidents' heights fell somewhere between those two.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about past presidents! If you want even more information, head over to our website and download one of our many lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Do you know how to calculate sales tax? In part six of our Financial Literacy for Kids series, you will learn how to do just that! Sales tax is an extra cost that is added to a product or service that you buy. The government uses sales tax money to pay for things, such as new roads and water lines.

Some states don't use a sales tax. Those states are Delaware, Alaska, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. That means that if you want to buy something for $100, you only pay exactly $100, and no more. There are also states that don't charge sales tax on certain kinds of purchases, such as groceries and food or prescription medications.

Sales tax is calculated as a percentage of the purchase price of an item. Generally, the percentage is somewhere between 4% and 9%. Keep watching to follow along with the example to figure out how to calculate sales tax. You will also learn a cool trick for calculating sales tax easily!

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about these important skills! If you want even more information, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Simple Machines for Kids teaches all about the main 6 simple machines in a fun and interactive way. We will learn about the different simple machines, which are; Incline Plane, Lever, Wedge, Screw, Wheel and Axle, and the Pulley. Almost any machine is created with one of these elements.

The inclined plane can be found in many places. It is triangular shaped with a smooth and even surface and helps move objects to higher or lower places.

The lever is a beam with a ridge that freely rotates or moves on a pivot. It helps you move heavy objects with ease.

The wedge is often attached to a handle. Used for cutting, splitting, tightening, to hold back or together, or for scraping.

Screws are cylinders with a solid top at one end, and a pointed
tip at the other end. Used to hold things together as they pull or push the object.

The large disc is the wheel and the small cylinder is the axle. The wheel is one of the greatest inventions in human history, but would not work without the axle.

A wheel with a groove in it, and a rope in the groove is called a pulley. A pulley lifts or lowers objects of different weights with relative ease.

This makes them easier to be studied. Scientists classify animals, plants and insects based on things they have in common. Just like kids would do with their toys!

Taxonomy means to classify living things. Scientists and biologists use a taxonomy chart to classify all the organisms on Earth. This chart includes the following groups: Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species. Throughout the video we will learn about the different taxonomies, how animals are classified and spend a little more time on vertebrates and invertebrates. Do you know what an alluvial fan is? How about a plateau? In this video for kids, you will learn all about lots of different types of landforms. These natural features include mountains, hills, valleys, alluvial fans, and plateaus, and so many more. Keep watching to see how much you know and how much you can learn!

Let's start with an alluvial fan. This is a fan-shaped mass of alluvial, a type of clay sediment that forms as the flow of a river slows down. Similarly, other landforms are shaped by nature, too. Sometimes it can take thousands or millions of years for a landform to develop. And landforms comprise lots of different types of materials. Fossils, sediments, and lava from volcanoes all contribute to the creation of various landforms.

There are around 10 main types of landforms on Earth. These include mountains, valleys, islands, coasts, deserts, rivers, and oceans. This video goes into each of these types. Mountains, for instance, all have peaks at the top. The Himalayas are the highest mountain range, and they are home to the tallest mountain in the worldโ€”Mount Everest. Valleys are the low-lying areas that tend of sit between mountains. The most well-known valley in the U.S. is Death Valley, which is the lowest, hottest, and driest area in all of North America.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about these four different landforms! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about landforms, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

NOTE: Around the 4:40 mark, we mention that President Ford expanded the celebration of Black history from one week to the full month 50 years after President Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation. The correct number is 113 years later. We apologize for the error.

Every February, Americans use the month to reflect on and celebrate the achievements of African Americans in American history. That is what Black History Month is all about. In this video for kids, you will learn how this particular month-long celebration came to be. At one point, the country didn't even study any events related to African American history because it dealt with such a tragic period in our history. In 1915, an African American historian named Carter G. Woodson decided to change that. "You must give your own story to the world," he wrote.

Woodson recognized that the predominately white historical association from which he was banned had no interest in attributing advances in science, technology, and other fields to non-White people. And very few people studied Black history at this time. School textbooks didn't even contain information about it. To give proper recognition to the accomplishments of Black Americans, he started the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and declared the second week in February as "Negro History Week."

Carter Woodson chose this week because it commemorated the birthdays of two significant historical figures related to the freedom and equality of African Americans: Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist who was born enslaved in the early 1800s. He was able to escape to the North and declared himself a free man, becoming an abolitionist and advocate for human rights. He met Abraham Lincoln on several occasions and may have influenced Lincoln's ideas on slavery.

It wasn't until Gerald Ford was president of the U.S. that the week-long celebration of Black history became a month-long period instead. Black History Month matters because it celebrates the sacrifices that so many Black Americans faced and endured to bring the country to where it is. As former President Obama stated, "We recommit to reaching for a day when no person is judged by anything but the content of their character."

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about Black History Month! If you want even more information, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

In this video we learn all about comets for kids. Students will learn where comets come from, how comets are formed, what comets are made of and many other fun and interesting facts about comets.

We learn that a comet in the outer parts of the Solar System is too small to be seen from Earth. You can think of a comet as a large snowball filled with or covered by dust, metal, and debris. They have an icy core, covered by a layer of black dust. The center is mainly composed of water and gases, frozen and mixed together with bits of rock and metal. The nickname for a comet can be a โ€œdirty snowballโ€.

When a comet gets closer to the Sun, the ice melts and changes into a gas. Dust particles spread out around the nucleus in a cloud called a coma, and the Sun causes them to glow. The coma of an average comet is sixty thousand miles across, but it is also very thin. Radiation and the solar wind drive the gases of the coma away causing it to form a straight tail. The tail may grow to ninety-million miles in length.

Have you ever wondered what life would be like if you could not see or hear anything? That was life for a woman named Helen Keller. In this video for kids, you will learn about the life and accomplishments of this incredible historical figure. Even today, her story and lasting impact are inspiring.

Helen Keller was born in Alabama on June 27, 1880. When she was a little under 2 years old, she fell ill to meningitis and lost both her sight and hearing. She hadn't yet learned how to speak. Her parents knew she would need special help and found that assistance through Anne Sullivan.

Anne Sullivan had been blind herself once but received it back after a surgery. She wanted Helen to live a normal life and began teaching and helping her at age 7. She would remain Helen's helper and companion for over 50 years! Anne first taught Helen words by placing an object in one of Helen's hands and using sign language to spell out the word in the other hand. In other words, she used Helen's sense of touch to teach her words.

Another teacher named Sarah Fuller helped Helen learn how to speak by using the vibrations of words on her own lips. Helen learned how to feel the vibrations and get a sense of how her own lips moved to make her own sounds. Eventually, she was able to speak as anyone else. She also learned how to read using Braille.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about Helen Keller! If you want even more information, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

In our video "Food Chain for Kids" we learn all about the different food chains and food webs. All of us eat. You may eat meat or only eat vegetables but one way or another every living thing eats. When you eat something it gives you energy. In a way, the energy comes from the food you eat, but the energy actually came from the Sun first. You are simply the last organism in the food chain to eat the food. A food chain is a path that energy takes from producers to consumers all the way down to decomposers.

Throughout this fun scientific video we will will walk with you through the energy cycle... from the sun to plants, plants to animals and humans, and much more! We will learn about producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, and decomposers and how each of these living things play an important role in the food chain.

If you're looking for even more food chain resources we invite you to download our comprehensive 9 page food chain lesson plan that comes with more content pages, worksheets, food chain activities and more! Available for free download here: https://learnbright.org/lesson....s/science/food-chain

In this video we will learn all about the States of Matter for Kids. The 3 states of matter are solids, Liquids and Gases. Have you ever asked yourself "What is a solid?", "What is a liquid?", or "What is a Gas?" Well, if you have, we've got you covered. From what they look like, feel like, smell like we will cover it all. We know that solids and liquids can be felt but often times gasses cannot. We learn about how water can be in any of the 3 states. As an Ice cube it is a solid. When the ice cube melts or when you turn on your kitchen faucet water is a liquid. When it gets very hot and it starts to evaporate water becomes a gas. Learn this and more in a fun introduction to the states of matter.

Don't just stop with the video. Download your free 8 page lesson plan complete with states of matter activities, worksheets and more! https://learnbright.org/lesson....s/science/states-of-

Which beverage would you rather drink: milk, soda, water, or orange juice? Each one of these liquids tastes very different. Why? Because they all have different levels of chemicals called acids and bases. In this video for kids, you will learn why liquids, and even the foods you eat, taste a certain way.

Acids tend to be on the sour side. In fact, the more acidic something is, the more sour it will taste. Bases, on the other hand, taste bitter. The more basic (or alkaline) a substance, the more bitter it will be. Lemon juice is a great example of a very acidic liquid. Almond milk is a great example of a basic liquid.

When something is acidic, the molecules split apart and release hydrogen ions. Molecules of basic substances split apart and release hydroxide ions and reduce the number of hydrogen ions. A higher number of hydrogen ions yields a more acidic solution while a higher number of hydroxide ions yields a more basic or alkaline solution.

Examples of acids and bases are everywhere. Apart from the liquids we drink, acids are also found in car batteries, and bases are often found in household cleaning products. In addition, our bodies contain both acids and bases. The stomach has hydrochloric acid to help digest food and kill bad bacteria. The pancreas contains a base that helps with digestion as well.

You will also learn about the pH scale and about indicators. The pH scale measures the level of acidity or base, or number of hydrogen ions, in a specific substance. The scale goes from 0 to 14, with numbers between 0โ€“7 indicating acids and between 7โ€“14 indicating bases. Litmus paper is one of the most common indicators. When put in a solution, it will turn red to indicate an acid or blue to indicate a base.

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about these interesting chemicals! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

What do spiders and lobsters have in common? It may surprise you to learn that these two animals actually fall into the same phylum: arthropods! In this video for kids, you will learn lots of interesting facts about the many different arthropods that live around us. Of all the groups of animals, arthropods are the most diverse. There are over a million different species!

Insects, arachnids, and crustaceans are the three largest groups of arthropods. Crustaceans, of course, live in water. Insects and spiders live on land. In fact, you can find arthropods in every habitat on earth! Some can easily live in really cold, frigid climates while others thrive in the heat of the hottest desert! Which ones live near you?

Most arthropods are segmented into three sections: head, thorax, and abdomen. Arthropods also have a nervous system with a brain and nerves! They also have a circulatory system and a digestive system. Speaking of food, their diets vary widely depending on the species.

Some eat plants, some eat animals, and some eat both. Usually, they have some form of appendage that helps them get food into their mouths. And there are others, such as some species of spiders, that have an appendage specifically for inserting venom into their prey. Ouch!

We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about this huge group of animals! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many lesson plans about different kinds of animals, full of activities, worksheets, and more!
