In which John Green teaches you about the Progressive Era in the United States. In the late 19th and early 20th century in America, there was a sense that things could be improved upon. A sense that reforms should be enacted. A sense that progress should be made. As a result, we got the Progressive Era, which has very little to do with automobile insurance, but a little to do with automobiles. All this overlapped with the Gilded Age and is a little confusing, but here we have it. Basically, people were trying to solve some of the social problems that came with the benefits of industrial capitalism. To oversimplify, there was a competition between the corporations' desire to keep wages low and workers' desire to have a decent life. Improving food safety, reducing child labor, and unions were all on the agenda in the Progressive Era. While progress was being made, and people were becoming freer, these gains were not equally distributed. Jim Crow laws were put in place in the south, and immigrant rights were restricted as well. So once again on Crash Course, things aren't so simple.

English-language-learner services are designed to prevent educational inequity, but for some students, the specialized services may be reinforcing it, argues Peggy Estrada, an associate research scientist in the Latin American and Latino Studies department at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The diminished expectations and social stigma tied to the ELL status often means that middle- and high school-age English-learners are linguistically and academically isolated with less access to a school’s full curriculum and English-speaking peers. Estrada argues that developing a common definition and exit criteria for English-learners could help solve the problem.

In all that has been written about teacher evaluation, there has been one glaring omission: For teachers, it is frightening.

It’s intimidating to adjust to new performance expectations, anxiety-inducing when a job rating is attached to students’ test scores, and downright terrifying when less-than-rosy results come back.

All of that makes Renee Pryor’s job one of the most challenging in Tennessee’s Lincoln County school district—a job, she jokes, that “no one wants.” She is the administrator who works with new teachers and those who have gotten a lower score on one element of the reviews, typically the portion that is based on student-test scores.

Formally the district’s supervisor of evaluation programs, Pryor is in reality responsible for making sure that evaluations of the district’s 250 teachers trigger useful feedback and targeted support—rather than leaving them frustrated and bewildered.
