Krampus: The Dark Side of Christmas You Need to Know! | K12 #k12 #virtual #onlinelearning #education
You better watch out—St. Nick isn’t the only one coming to town! Meet the mythological creature that gives weight to the saying “naughty or nice,” Krampus.
Half-goat and half-demon, Krampus is said to have Pagan origins and appears in Austrian, German, and Czech folklore. On December 5, also known as Krampusnacht (Krampus Night), Krampus travels alongside his better and nicer counterpart, St. Nicholas. The dynamic duo visits children throughout the night, and as St. Nick awards good children, Krampus punishes them. In some myths, he takes them to the underworld in a sack and saves them for a midnight snack. In others, he swats them like a piñata. Coal doesn’t seem so bad now, does it?
Nowadays, you’ll only see Krampus on the big screen or in traditions like Krampuslauf, where people run amok dressed as the creature and scare children. And if you see him elsewhere, you probably didn’t make the nice list. Happy holidays!

Every January, we honor the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. He’s one of many to champion the civil rights movement, participating in and leading peaceful protests for the right to vote, desegregation, and labor rights. He passionately recited his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, but did you know the original version of his speech didn’t include this iconic phrase?
Vicki Crawford, who oversees the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection, says there is only one of the speech’s drafts in his handwritten notes. It was originally titled “Normalcy, Never Again.” He worked on the speech until 3 AM, but not once did it include the word “dream.”
When he read the speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 23, 1963, it was word-for-word. That was until gospel singer Mahalia Jackson prompted him to tell them about the dream. He went off script and continued improvising the speech we know today.

Happy February! It’s the month we celebrate Black history, love, and famous presidents— yet it’s the shortest of the year. Why, you ask? Find out in this K12 Teaching Moment.
Let’s travel back in time to ancient Rome. The Roman calendar year began in March and only had 304 days. That was until Roman king Numa Pompilius decided to align the calendar with the Lunar New Year, typically up to 355 days long.
Romans were superstitious of even numbers and considered them unlucky. So, King Pompilius added January and February to the calendar and changed each month to an odd number of days, either 29 or 31. But odd numbers across 12 months would sum up to an even number!
February had to be the “odd one out” with a mere 28 days.
The calendar we know today has changed since then, but February is stuck with 28 days—29 if it’s a leap year, but that’s a different episode!
Do you love period pieces like Bridgerton? Well, the Regency era is not as glitz and glam as you may think. ✨💃 Dive into what the experience was like for women in this K12 Teaching Moment.
