The United States did not always have 50 states. A long time ago in the 1700s the country did not yet exist. The land was here, but there were no states until 1787. During that time, the first pieces of land, which are called states today, were called territories or colonies. Colonies were formed in America when people from England came and lived in different places on the East coast. There were 13 original colonies, which were also the first states of America. They are shown on the map to the left.
As time passed more and more states joined together and the United States was formed with a total of 50 states. The first state of America was Delaware and the last state to become part of America was Hawaii. It is important to learn the different names of the 50 states of America. When you hear the news, read a book, or do school work, the different names of the states may be said. The more you read about the different states, and see the names of each state, you will start to remember them.

Who is George Washington Carver? He wasn't the first President of the United States, even though his name is very similar! In this video, you and your kids will learn about this incredible scientist. You will discover many interesting facts about the history and life of this special man. For instance, George Washington Carver's exact birth date remains a mystery! Because he was born into slavery, his birth records were not kept. And he, one of his sister's, and his mom were kidnapped by Confederate raiders when he was a baby! He was eventually found, however, and returned to the Carver farm where he was born.
Unlike other boys his age, George didn't work in the fields. He was taught how to tend to the kitchen garden. And what a stroke of luck for the world! George learned all about plants and how to improve their health. He was very intelligent and graduated high school at a young age. His passion for plants led him to study botany in college. After graduating, he was asked to teach agriculture at a Tuskegee College.
Throughout his life, he discovered many wonderful things about plants that would end up helping farmers grow larger and healthier crops. These discoveries spread throughout the world. One of the most famous is his realization that growing and harvesting peanuts every other year or so with cotton kept a specific pest away from the crops and yielded healthier soil. Even though many farmers resisted initially, George came up with several inventive uses for peanuts that would make growing peanut crops worthwhile.
George Washington Carver's life work earned him several special nicknames: The Plant Doctor, The Peanut Man, The Farmer's Friend. We celebrate him and his life on January 5, George Washington Carver Recognition Day.

What do you know about magnets or magnetism? Every magnet has a north pole and a south pole. A north and south pole will always pull toward each other, or attract to each other. Did you know that there are three main parts (or branches) of the U.S. government? It's true! The three branches are the executive, legislative, and judicial. In this Three Branches of Government video for kids, you will learn about the people who work in each branch and how they balance each other out. In fact, one reason we have three branches is in part to ensure there are checks and balances and that no one branch has too much power or control.
The executive branch is the one that the president belongs to. The vice president and the cabinet (a group of people who advise the president) are also part of this branch. The president specifically is the country's leader and can approve or veto laws passed by the legislative branch. The vice president is the second highest executive office in the government. However, this person is also the president or head of the Senate.
Speaking of the Senate, it is one of the houses of Congress. The other is the House of Representatives. These two houses of Congress are responsible for writing, discussing, and voting on laws. The Senate approves the president's appointments to the cabinet, meaning that they have a say in who the president picks for certain jobs. The House of Representatives can override the president's vetoes if they have a large enough majority.
Finally, the judicial branch is where you would find the Supreme Court, a group of nine individuals (eight justices and one chief justice) who oversee the U.S. court system. These individuals have no term limits and can serve as a Supreme Court judge for life. The Supreme Court decides whether something is constitutional or unconstitutional. It also decides which court cases to review and sometimes determine new ways to interpret the law.

Have you ever seen, in person or in photographs, the giant obelisk in Washington, DC? This tall building at the opposite end of the reflection pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial has quite a bit of history behind it. Named after George Washington, the monument was designed by Robert Mills following a competition for designs held in 1836 by the Washington Monument Society.
The construction of the monument took place in two phases due to lack of funds, political turmoil, and uncertainty about the survival of the country. No construction took place between 1856 and 1876. During the first phase between 1848 and 1856, they constructed the first 150 feet of the monument, composed of a pile of bluestone gneiss unfinished rubble stones held together by mortar.
The remainder of the monument was constructed between 1876 and 1884. It was composed of finished marble surface stones and partially backed by finished granite stones. The difference in the shading of the monument can be seen where the construction was halted and later resumed with the marble from a different source.
Surrounding the monument on the outside perimeter are fifty American flags flying 24 hours a day on a large circle of flagpoles centered on the monument. In 2011, an earthquake in the area slightly damaged the monument with over 150 cracks. Most of the damage occurred in the pyramid section at the top. Speaking of the pyramid top, the monument was originally going to have a flat top instead.

What is an element? And how many known elements are there in the vast universe? Periodic Table of Elements for Kids answers these and other questions and explains how the table came to be in the first place. Elements make up everything in the whole world, so it makes sense to learn a little more about them. The Periodic Table provides us with a lot of valuable information about these different atoms.
The first person to propose that scientists arrange the elements in a table was Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. At the time, there were only 65 known elements, and Mendeleev arranged them according to their atomic weights as well as by their similar properties. Today, the table has seven rows, called periods, and 18 columns, called groups. The elements in each group have similar properties. For instance, the elements that can be classified as alkali metals all align in one group.
What you can learn about each element on the table depends on which table you look at. Some provide more information than others. For the most part, you can discover the element's name, atomic number, atomic weight, and symbol. Many symbols reflect the name of the element. For instance, the symbol for calcium is Ca. Others reflect the Latin origins of the word, such as for gold, the symbol for which is Au.
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about the many elements on Earth! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about atoms or elements, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Who is George Washington? What did George Washington do? Did he cut down a cherry tree? In this video we learn all about George Washington for kids. George Washington was the very first president of the United States and has a profound impact on history not only in the United States but in the whole world! In this short but fun introduction video you and your students will learn all about him and the impact he had on the world.
George Washington was the first President of the United States. He was
born February 22, 1732 in Virginia. At age 16 he had a job as a surveyor, which means he measured the size
of new land turning the information into maps. He later became a landowner in Mount Vernon, Virginia and was
elected to the Virginia legislature.
Due to problems with the British wanting to control the colonies,
Washington led the Continental Army in a victory over the British during
a war called the American Revolution.
Several years later, after the war, Washington was elected as President
in 1789 until 1797. He helped create and guide the government based
on the words of the Constitution, and he took on many roles that are still
part of the presidency today.

In this video for kids, you will learn a lot about Anne Frank, an incredible individual who endured unimaginable suffering like so many other Jewish people during this time in history.
Anne Frank was born in Germany in 1929 to Otto and Edith Frank. She also had a sister named Margot. Otto's family, who was Jewish, had lived in Germany for many generations. Because Adolph Hitler, who hated Jews, gained control of the German government, the Franks had to move to the Netherlands. For a few years, life was pretty normal, but the family was unable to escape to the United States or England before the war started in 1939 and before the war spread to the Netherlands.
Jewish people had to endure immense persecution over the next couple years. There was always a threat of being sent to concentration camps. The Frank family decided to go into hiding. Otto, his family, and some friends moved to a secret annex in 1942, when Anne was just 13 years old. They lived there for a couple years, and Anne started writing a diary about her experiences. She hoped one day to publish it as The Secret Annex and become a famous writer.
Unfortunately, Anne Frank and her family were discovered in August of 1944 and arrested. They were sent to concentration camps a month later. Anne and her sister died of typhus in March of 1945, just two months before the end of the war. Of all the individuals who lived in the secret annex, Otto was the only one to survive. Miep Gies, a woman who had hidden Anne's diary when the Franks were arrested, gave the diary to Otto, who published it under the title The Secret Annex. Anne's wish came trueโshe became a famous writer whose book has sold over 30 million copies and been translated into 70 languages.

What does it take to make a rainbow? Are there two points at which the rainbow touches the earth's surface? In this video for kids, you will learn all about the science behind how a rainbow forms. It takes three simple ingredients: light, water, and you!
Light is important because rainbows are actually made of light. The white light we see from the sun actually contains seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. When light enters a raindrop, it bends or refracts, and all the colors band together on the other side. That's what makes the light appear in a ribbon of color.
Rainbows appear in an arc shape. When the sun is low in the sky, the arc looks tall. When the sun is higher up, the arc of the rainbow is lower. But believe it or not, rainbows don't have an arc shape. It's an optical illusion! If you are in an airplane and you see a rainbow, it will be in a circular shape. All rainbows are circular.
Some rainbows appear at night, and we call these moonbows. Moonbows appear as a faint circle around the moon. They are usually not easy to see, and sometimes they even look white instead of colorful. There are also double rainbows and upside-down rainbows. Upside-down are very rare, and they actually only occur when light bends through the thin screen of tiny ice crystals high in the sky.
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about this beautiful natural phenomenon! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many lesson plans about rainbows and light, full of activities, worksheets, and more!
