Although the use of a spy balloon in 2023 was considered startlingly primitive, these lighter-than-a feather sacks caused an entire ‘balloonomania’ when they first began being introduced in eighteenth century France. Pilots risked their lives to prove their creations could be used for flight, with Jean-Pierre Blanchard even throwing away his trousers and jacket to keep his balloon afloat as he and his friend crossed the English Channel airborne. Yet, it wasn’t long before these marvellous spectacles, once wondrous spheres of colour in the sky, would be given additional roles. Ones as innovative tools for destruction, terror and intelligence gathering. Well… occasionally, of course.

Probability and statistics on Khan Academy: We dare you to go through a day in which you never consider or use probability. Did you check the weather forecast? Busted! Did you decide to go through the drive through lane vs walk in? Busted again! We are constantly creating hypotheses, making predictions, testing, and analyzing. Our lives are full of probabilities! Statistics is related to probability because much of the data we use when determining probable outcomes comes from our understanding of statistics. In these tutorials, we will cover a range of topics, some which include: independent events, dependent probability, combinatorics, hypothesis testing, descriptive statistics, random variables, probability distributions, regression, and inferential statistics. So buckle up and hop on for a wild ride. We bet you're going to be challenged AND love it!

Linear Algebra on Khan Academy: Have you ever wondered what the difference is between speed and velocity? Ever try to visualize in four dimensions or six or seven? Linear algebra describes things in two dimensions, but many of the concepts can be extended into three, four or more. Linear algebra implies two dimensional reasoning, however, the concepts covered in linear algebra provide the basis for multi-dimensional representations of mathematical reasoning. Matrices, vectors, vector spaces, transformations, eigenvectors/values all help us to visualize and understand multi dimensional concepts. This is an advanced course normally taken by science or engineering majors after taking at least two semesters of calculus (although calculus really isn't a prereq) so don't confuse this with regular high school algebra.

"Continents and Oceans” (See below for lyrics)
Traverse across “Continents and Oceans” and learn a little about each in this smooth and catchy tune by ABCmouse.com. Which continent has the most people? How about the least? Which one is the hottest? Can you name all five oceans? Our Earth is a very big place covered by water and land; learn about its seven continents and five oceans, because someday you might travel to each!
Song Lyrics:
Our Earth is a very, very, very big place!
It is covered by water and land.
It has five huge oceans, where we can swim,
And seven continents, where we can stand.
Asia is the continent that has the most people.
It’s also the largest in size.
It has the 50 highest mountains in the world—
Their peaks reach high into the skies.
Second largest is Africa.
It’s the hottest continent of all.
It has the largest sandy desert in the world
And animals both large and small.
If Africa’s hottest, then which is the coldest?
Antarctica—but it’s so very cold.
It’s only home to seals, penguins,
and other birds.
Though there’s snow, it’s the driest, I’m told!
And which is the wettest? It’s South America!
Rainforests cover much of its face.
Millions of animal species live there.
You’ll find them all over the place!
Our Earth is a very, very, very big place!
It is covered by water and land.
It has five huge oceans, where we can swim,
And seven continents, where we can stand.
Let’s look at Australia.
It’s the smallest of continents.
The fewest people call it home.
Most of its land is the bushland and outback,
Where koalas and kangaroos roam.
Now on to Europe. Though it’s rather small,
It has dozens of famous old cities.
Berlin, Madrid, Paris, London, and Rome—
Each city is uniquely pretty!
Last but not least is North America.
It’s the continent that I know best.
It is the home of our own United States—
A wonder from East Coast to West!
But let’s not forget, there are also five oceans.
Please let me be quite specific.
Their names are the Southern, Atlantic,
and Arctic,
The Indian, and the Pacific!
Our Earth is a very, very, very big place!
It is covered by water and land.
It has five huge oceans, where we can swim,
And seven continents, where we can stand.
I hope you learned something
about all the continents
And the names of our five oceans.
Hopefully, someday you will travel to each,
But only if you get the notion!
Our Earth is a very, very, very big place!
It is covered by water and land.
It has five huge oceans, where we can swim,
And seven continents, where we can stand.

Do you know what the five food groups are? Do you know which foods fall into each category? In Food Groups for Kids, you will learn about the benefits that foods in each of these groups provide your body and keep you healthy. You will also discover how many servings a day you should have of each one.
Fruits include things like apples, nectarines, and bananas. They provide your body with lots of essential vitamins and nutrients. Vitamin C and potassium are two very important vitamins and minerals that your body needs. Vegetables like carrots and spinach may not be as sweet as fruits, but they have tons of vitamins and nutrients that you need as well!
Grains probably makes you think of bread and cereal. This group also includes pasta, tortillas, and popcorn! These foods also provide you with fiber, which helps your body do a lot of good things. Next are proteins, which include foods like meat, fish, beans, and tofu. They can provide your body with energy and help your bones and muscles grow strong. Similarly, dairy products can also strengthen your bones, and give you vitamin D to help reduce your risk of diseases.
Each group requires a different number of servings each day. And those serving sizes differ as well. Fruits, for instance, require 1 1/2 cups per serving while proteins require 5 ounces per serving. Some foods even contain multiple food groups in one place, like pizza, which can have grains from the bread and toppings from the other four groups.
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about these five different food groups! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!
