This week's assignment comes from Jonn Herschend and Will Rogan, who cofounded THE THING Quarterly, a publication that distributes everyday objects conceived of by different artists. They ask you to consider the meaning of physical objects in an increasingly digital world and Make a Thing.
John Green then talks about Invader, a French street artist who travels the world and installs mosaics inspired by video games from the 70s and 80s.
INSTRUCTIONS - Make a Thing
1. Take something from the virtual world
2. Make is physical
3. Upload a photo of your physical object using #theartassignment

This assignment comes to you from Chicago based artist Geof Oppenheimer. Geof's work reflects personal experience and the social and political atmosphere they were created in, and he wants you to make an object that does the same.
John Green and Sarah Green then discusses what embarrasses us overtime and what we no longer find embarrassing. Sarah then takes us to art history to show where the "Idealized Body" began.
INSTRUCTIONS - Embarrassing Object
1. Create something that makes you feel uncomfortable, out of a material or group of materials
2. Document it and upload using #theartassignment
3. Fame and glory (Your work might be in a future episode)

We sit down with artist Desirée Holman to talk about her current project, Sophont, which explores ideas of science fiction, aliens, new-age ideology, mysticism, and tech culture. Her assignment asks you to become a science fiction character by creating and wearing some kind of psionics hardware that enhances your character's abilities.
Sarah Green was able to connect this assignment with art history through Rebecca Horn, who created "body sculptures" as she was sick in a hospital with lung poisoning.
INSTRUCTIONS - Become a Sci-Fi Character
1. Become a science fiction character who wears some sort of psionics hardware that enables this character to enhance their extra sensory abilities in some way
2. Upload your assignment using #theartassignment
3. Fame and glory (your work might be in a future episode)

Pre-order our book YOU ARE AN ARTIST (which includes new assignments!) here: http://bit.ly/2kplj2h So you look at a work of art and think to yourself, I could have done that. And maybe you really could have, but the issue here is more complex than that -- why didn't you? Why did the artist? And why does it have an audience? We delve into it by looking at work by artists like Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Piet Mondrian, and Cy Twombly, among others. You might find it’s not quite as simple as you think.
