Educational video for children to learn about heterotrophic organisms. Heterotrophs are those living beings that cannot make their own food. They must eat to obtain energy and survive. Based on their mode of nutrition, we classify heterotrophs in 3 groups: carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Carnivores feed on other heterotrophs. Herbivores mainly eat all kinds of plants, like vegetables or fruit. Omnivores eat a huge variety of foods, like meat, vegetables and plants. This means they are carnivores and also herbivores.

MIT grad shows how to use the elimination method to solve a system of linear equations (aka. simultaneous equations). To skip ahead: 1) For a BASIC example where terms cancel right away when you add the equations, skip to 0:25. 2) For an example in which you have to MULTIPLY ONE EQUATION by a number before adding the equations, skip to time 6:26. 3) For an example in which you have to MULTIPLY BOTH EQUATIONS by numbers before adding, skip to 12:12. P.S.) For HOW TO SUBTRACT equations instead of adding them, if you'd rather do that, skip to 18:00. Nancy formerly of MathBFF explains the steps.

Follow me on Instagram! https://instagram.com/mathnancy
Follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/nancypi

For how to solve a system of linear equations by the SUBSTITUTION METHOD, jump to: https://youtu.be/YriMMWbndn0

What does it mean to solve a system of equations using the elimination method? It means to solve for the x and y values that make both equations true, using the elimination method. Elimination is just one way of solving (substitution is another way) and is sometimes called linear combination. Here's how:

1) BASIC ELIMINATION: First, make sure the equations are ordered in the same way, with their like terms lined up vertically. Then, try adding the equations (vertically) to make a new equation. If a term in the first equation has the same number coefficient but opposite sign (like 5y and -5y), then adding the equations will mean that those terms cancel. Since those terms disappear (in the example, 5y and -5y), there is just the variable x left in the equation so you can solve for x. Once you solve for x, you can take that number and plug it in for x in either of the original equations in the system, to solve for the other variable, y. The (x,y) pair is your solution.

2) MULTIPLY ONE EQUATION BEFORE ADDING: Sometimes terms don't immediately cancel when you add the two equations. What do you do then? Try multiplying one of the equations by a number (both the left and right sides) to make either the x terms or y terms have similar coefficients (but opposite sign), like positive 4x and negative 4x. Then add the two equations (the new version) and follow the same steps as in the first example.

3) MULTIPLY BOTH EQUATIONS BEFORE ADDING: If it does not help to just multiply one equation by a number, you may need to multiply both equations, separately, by numbers. If you check to see whether you can just multiply one equation by a number and add opposite terms/eliminate a variable, and it is not possible, then aim for an LCM, or least common multiple, by multiplying each equation by a different number, and then adding the equations.

P.S.) YES, YOU CAN SUBTRACT INSTEAD (if you want): If you have a system that has the exact same x terms or exact same y terms in both equations, if you prefer, you can just subtract the equations. Alternatively, if you still wanted to add the equations, you could just multiply one of the equations by -1 first and then add the equations and solve normally.

IMPORTANT: If you get something like 0 = 0 or 8 = 8, or something like 1 = 2 or 0 = 21 when you are following these steps and trying to solve, then you have probably found a special case. If you get something TRUE like 0 = 0 (a number equals the same number), then there are an infinite number of solutions to the system, and you can just write "infinitely-many solutions". If instead you get something FALSE like 0 = 21, then there is no solution (inconsistent system), and you can write "no solution".

If you ask a linguist “How many languages are there in the world?” the answer most will give you is “around 7000”. We say “around” because there are several factors that make it difficult to determine what exactly counts as a language, including the difficulty of distinguishing between languages and dialects, various political factors, and the fact that not all languages have the same degree of resources and records. In this episode of Crash Course Linguistics, we’ll explore these 3 factors to learn about world languages and linguistic diversity, as well as the inequities that these factors can create.

Multiply by 2 by Jack Hartmann will help you learn the 2 times table. Multiply by 2's with a techno beat. Learn the 2's times tables by singing along with the multiplication fact the first time through. The second time through we delay the answer so students can give the answer and then the answer is reinforced. The third time we supply the 2's times table and leave the answer blank for higher order learning.
Multiply by 2's with this catchy techno tune to help student's learn their 2 multiplication table.

First time: I sing the multiplication table I give the answer.

Second time: I say the table I delay the answer, so children have a chance to answer before me.

Third time: I completely omit the answer so children can answer on their own.

This song on learning how to Multiply by 2 is a wonderful way for your children to learn and practice the multiplication tables.
Multiply by 2's with this catchy techno tune to help student's learn their 2's multiplication table

Gem Stapleton is a reader in computer science at University of Brighton. Her research in the area of visual languages aims to make complex mathematical ideas accessible by using diagrams instead of symbols.

This short film demonstrates her work in creating theoretical underpinnings for automated Euler diagram drawing methods, which provide a visual means of representing sets and their relationships.

Professional Learning
-------------------------------
Professional development to teaching is what position is to real estate. Teachers use the Federal Government's Australian Professional Standards for Teachers to benchmark their skills
and the State Government's Teaching for Effective Learning (TfEL) document to organise appropriate pedagogies to deliver curriculum to students.

Teachers at Brighton Secondary School participate in a variety of teams all working to improve teachers' practice, which in turn improves outcomes for students.

Teachers are in Faculty teams linked to subject areas, as well as in Teacher Learning Communities organised around the Australian Cross Curriculum Priorities (Engaging with Asia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, Sustainability) and the Australian Capabilities (Literacy, Numeracy, Social and Personal, Critical and Creative Thinking, Ethical Behaviour, Cultural Understanding, Information and Communication Technology). Staff teams meet to advance their knowledge.

At Brighton Secondary School staff professional development is augmented by the professional learning period on Tuesdays from 2.30 to 4.30pm.

Title: Learn to subtract 1-digit numbers from multiples of ten with regrouping.

You can already subtract a one-digit number from 10 and 20.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to subtract a 1-digit number from other numbers made up of tens.
Here's an example. 40 minus 2.
Forty is 4 tens.
We start subtracting in the ones place.
We can't subtract 2 from 0, so we have to take a ten from 40 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 4 in 40 to show we took a ten and we enter a 3 here to show we have 3 tens left in the tens place, which is 30.
We put a 1 here to show that we made ten ones.
Now we subtract 2 from the 10 ones.
10 minus 2 is 8.
In the tens place, there's nothing to subtract, so we bring down the 3.
That gives us 38.
So 40 minus 2 is 38.
Another example. 60 minus 7.
Sixty is 6 tens.
We start subtracting in the ones place.
We can't subtract 7 from 0, so we have to take a ten from 60 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 6 in 60 to show we took a ten and write a 5 above it to show there are 5 tens left, which is 50.
We show that we made ten ones by putting a 1 here.
Now we subtract 7 from the 10 ones.
10 minus 7 is 3.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 5 we have left.
That gives us 53.
So 60 minus 7 is 53.
Last example. 80 minus 4.
We start with the ones place.
We can't subtract 4 from 0, so we have to take a ten from 80 to make ten ones.
We cross out the 8 in 80 to show that we took a ten.
And we write 7 here to show there are 7 tens left, which is 70.
We put a 1 here to show that we made ten ones.
Now we subtract 4 from 10.
10 minus 4 is 6.
There's nothing to subtract in the tens place, so we bring down the 7 we have left.
That gives us 76.
So 80 minus 4 is 76.
In the rest of this lesson, you'll work problems like these. You can use these boxes if you want, but you don’t have to.
