Study Tips for the visual learner.
Are you are visual learner?
Do you prefer pictures instead of written directions?
As the teacher is lecturing do you create pictures in your mind?
You may be a visual learner.
In this video I suggest several tips help a visual learner at school
Heterotrophs vs Autotrophs An autotroph is also called a producer and a heterotroph is called a consumer.
A heterotroph is an organism that cannot practice photosynthesis and must consume other organisms for energy
An autotroph practices photosynthesis.
Topics Covered
Autotrophs
Heterotroph
Photosynthesis
Consumer
Producers
Carnivore
Herbivore
Omnivore
Decomposers
Detritivore
Scavenger
Saprophyte
How do ecosystems change over time?
Ecological succession, also called Biological succession occurs when one ecological community changes into another.
There are two main types of ecological succession.
Primary and Secondary Succession.
Primary Succession occurs when there is no soil and the new community has to start without any soil.
Secondary succession occurs when an event destroys an area but the soil remains.
The pioneer species are the first plants to appear in the new ecosystem.

Food webs are diagrams that depict the transfer of energy in an ecosystem. In this video, I explain a food web using the real-life diet of an owl.
Many times in Science classes you may dissect an owl pellet to see what the diet of the owl consists of.
Owls consume rodents and small birds. The energy of these animals is transferred to the owl. Therefore, on the food web, you will see the arrows pointing towards the owl.

Erosion happens when rocks and sediment are picked up and moved to another place by water, pause wind pause ice pause and even gravity
Erosion can occur slowly over time like a sand dune or quickly like a flood
There several methods of erosion.
Remember, weathering breaks down the rock, and erosion moves the rock away
Rainfall can cause erosion and wash sediment away
Valley erosion occurs when rushing streams and rivers move rocks and sediment downstream
Oceans are a huge force of erosion
The wind is can cause erosion
A dust storm can be a huge force of erosion

Learn the difference between independent and dependent variables in research.
The independent variable can stand alone and is the variable that is being changed or manipulated.
The dependent variable is the variable that is being measured.
Learning the difference between these two types of variables can be very helpful in Science and any type of experiment.
I also cover how to graph these two types of variables.
Why are some objects considered alive and other objects considered non-living? I cover the 7 characteristics of life which determine if an object is alive or not.
These 7 characteristics include,
Made of Cells
Grow and Develop
Reproduce
Contain DNA
Require Energy
Respond to stimuli
Levels of organization
This video aligns with the Science standard S7L2
In addition, it answers the question " How are living things distinguished from non-living things?

An overview of the transition metals. Which group of metals are silver, maybe gold and sometimes liquid? The transition metals
The transition metals are the elements found in groups 3-12.
The transition metals are metallic elements that serve as a bridge, or transition, between the two sides of the table.

Hemophilia is an X-linked recessive disorder. The blood of a hemophiliac lacks the ability to clot, due to the fact that one or more of the plasma proteins required to form a clot is absent or reduced in their blood.
A recessive gene, it is carried on the female chromosome X . Males possess XY chromosomes and females XX. Since females have two X chromosomes, they are more often than not carriers.
If you look at the Punnett Square you can see the following.
Each child of a carrier will have a 50% chance of inheriting hemophilia. The daughter of a male haemophiliac will always inherit the disease, while a son cannot ever inherit it. A female will only be affected with haemophilia in the rare circumstance that she inherits mutated X chromosomes from both a hemophiliac father and a carrier mother. No case of such double inheritance is known among Queen Victoria's descendants.

Learn to add and subtract integers with counters
Using counters is a great way to teach integers to students and a great way to visualize integers when adding and subtracting.
You can use almost anything to represent integer counters.
Paper circles, coins, plastic circles can all be used as counters.

Learn how to figure out the original price from the percent and the discount price.
Sample original price questions
John saw that the $15.00 t-shirt he liked was discounted 25% from the original price.
What was the original price of the t-shirt?
Drew bought a used Honda Accord that cost $300. This amount was 70% of the original price. What was the original price of the car?
Refurbished computers sell at 40% discount of the original price. Amazon sells a fast, sleek, refurbished computer for $800. What was the original price of this computer?
Math Standard: MGSE6.RP.3c Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g. 30% of a quantity means 30/100 times the quantity); given a percent, solve problems involving finding the whole given a part and the part given the whole.

The gas giants which are also called the Jovian planets include the planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
These planets are not only huge but have no real surface, are composed of hydrogen and helium, and revolve around the Sun slowly.
These planets also have rings and many moons that revolve around them.

Phaneritic: Are igneous rocks with crystals larger than 1 mm. You could describe the texture as coarse Here are some examples
Aphanitic: The name tells you about this texture a = not
Phaner = visible
These rocks have very fine small crystals
Porphyritic: igneous rocks, for a rock that has a distinct difference in the size of the crystals, with at least one group of crystals obviously larger than another group. Wikipedia
Glassy: Are like the name suggests no crystals and the texture of glass.
Vesicular: are igneous rocks with bubbles they can be mafic or felsic
Pyroclastic: is a mixture of rock fragments, pumice, and volcanic ash. The ash is very fine-grained, so only the rock fragments and pumice are identifiable. A rock with a pyroclastic texture is termed a tuff with small fragments, a volcanic breccia if the fragments are larger.

Alkaline Earth Metals-- Alkaline earth metals are found in group 2 of the periodic table
They include beryllium (Be), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba), and radium (Ra)
The alkaline earth metals share several common properties, they have
Low density
Silver and soft metals
Ductile and malleable
React with halogens and water
Alkaline earth metals are reactive, not as reactive to alkali metals, but still very reactive. This is because they all contain two electrons in their outer shell. Because they are reactive they are usually found in nature in compound form.
Strontium compounds are often added to fireworks displays for their red flame test color.
Calcium is used by our body for our teeth and bones.
Magnesium is used in antacid and barium is used in light bulbs.
So there are the group 2 alkaline earth metals. They each have two valence electrons.
