Why do spiders have 8 eyes? It’s a seemingly simple question with a surprisingly complex answer. We’ll be hanging out with some jumping spiders (the cutest of all spiders) and some jumping spider researchers to investigate how a thumbnail-sized creature with a poppy seed-sized brain ended up evolving some of the most advanced eyes in the animal kingdom, overcoming a few limitations of physics in the process. We’ll watch as scientists study these spiders in a special eye tracking machine and learn how having 8 eyes instead of two gives these elite predators almost 360˚ vision and almost hawk-level depth perception and resolution.

Understanding amino acids and their role in the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology (how the information in DNA eventually gets expressed as chains of amino acids). Thinking about the amino and carboxyl groups and how amino acids are typically found as zwitterions at physiological pH. How amino acid side chains can impact protein structure.

Biology on Khan Academy: Life is beautiful! From atoms to cells, from genes to proteins, from populations to ecosystems, biology is the study of the fascinating and intricate systems that make life possible. Dive in to learn more about the many branches of biology and why they are exciting and important. Covers topics seen in a high school or first-year college biology course.

About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. How is AI affecting education?

At Anthropic, we often talk about “holding light and shade”: taking seriously both the benefits and the risks of the AI systems we’re building. In education, that trade-off is especially acute. AI offers the potential to scale up personalized learning, tutoring, and assessment, but it also invites some much more fundamental questions about how (and even what) students should learn.

In this video, four Anthropic staff members with deep personal ties to education discuss how they’re navigating this topic—at work and in their own lives, too.

00:24 – Introduction
1:15 – Why is Anthropic focused on this topic?
5:47 – How is AI affecting education today?
9:04 – What is the potential we see in AI for teaching and learning?
13:42 – How should children and teachers approach learning in the age of AI?
21:16 — What work is Anthropic doing in the sector?
31:19 – What are the things we’re still uncertain about?
38:20 – What would the successful incorporation of AI look like?

Where are all the aliens? The universe is too big and too old, why have we not met aliens yet? Do they live in computers? Were they wiped out by an ancient super intelligence? Or are we just to primitive to understand their motives? Whatever the answer is, it is incredibly important for our own future.

This video walks through the process of how to divide fractions by using 3 easy steps.

In this video we cover:
Review of how to multiply fractions
What is a reciprocal
How a reciprocal can make dividing fractions easy
The steps for dividing fractions: Keep the first fraction constant, flip the second fraction to its reciprocal, and change the sign to multiplication.
Once those steps are done, you can multiply across the numerator and denominators.

Improved math is a channel created to provide additional instruction on essential math concepts. I’m passionate about math and I know first-hand how important math concepts are in the real world.

Teachers, parents, guardians, homeschoolers, and students can use these videos to help reinforce math skills. These math videos are designed to help teach yourself math or provide self-study math tools to assist when additional instruction is needed. Teaching math and learning math has changed the way many students learn in this virtual environment and during the pandemic. Having on-demand math videos can provide math tutoring needed when children are not able to get help from their teachers after school hours or when trying to do math at home.

The library of math tutorials that I create can also be used as supplemental instructional material for homeschool math. Each full-length video comes with a subsequent knowledge check or math practice problems which serve as a virtual math topic worksheet to test your understanding of each skill. These videos can be paused to work out the problems on your own, then unpaused to check your answers. All of these videos can be found under the Knowledge Check playlist.

I also have a library of shorter videos (less than 1 minute in length - shorts) that are quick math tips and tricks on basic math topics. Some of these short math help videos include problems that you can work on yourself and submit your answers in the comments. They are all listed under my Math Tips and Tricks playlist.

Improved math is creating more videos every day to cover topics from 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, and 7th-grade math. The videos focus on fractions, basic math operations, geometry, and ratios but more topics are being added all the time. If there is a specific topic you would like to see covered, drop me a comment in one of my videos and let me know!

Free math help videos will be posted every Thursday and Friday. For additional math resources, check out my math help website at improvedmath.com where I post math worksheets and answers along with additional context on math basics.

Thanks for watching my channel.

When we talk about ‘English’, we often think of it as a single language. But what do the dialects spoken in dozens of countries around the world have in common with each other, or with the writings of Chaucer? Claire Bowern traces the language from the present day back to its ancient roots, showing how English has evolved through generations of speakers.

In this video I explain all the basics of particle physics and the standard model of particle physics. Check out Brilliant here: https://brilliant.org/DOS/

The standard model of particle physics is our fundamental description of the stuff in the universe. It doesn’t answer why anything exists, but does describe what exists and how it behaves, and that’s what we’ll be discovering in this video. We will cover the fermions, which contain the quarks and the leptons, as well as the bosons or force carriers. As well as which of the fundamental forces each of these fundamental particles interact with, along with the Higgs field. We’ll also look at the conservation rules of particle physics, symmetries in physics and the various quantum numbers that rule which particle interactions are valid and which are not.

Students move through the engineering design process as they write Arduino code and use a “digital sandbox” to create new colors out of the three programming primary colors: green, red and blue. They develop their own functions, use them to make disco light shows, and vary the pattern and colors of their shows. The digital sandbox is a hardware and software learning platform powered by a microcontroller that can interact with real-world inputs like light, while at the same time controlling LEDs and other outputs.

Students design their own logos, pictures or other graphic images and then use handheld GPS receivers to map them out. They write out the image on a field or playground, walk the route, and log GPS data. Displaying the collected data on the GPS receiver screen results in the finished artwork. The process requires students to use geometry, sketch, measure distances and make scaling calculations, and familiarizes them with technological devices. A student worksheet is provided.
