It's Kids Academy and welcome back to our channel! Social studies for kids is an essential subject in their initial classes. The three very important lessons of social studies are recycling, civil rights and the right to vote. Let’s describe these concepts in simpler words for kids.
Recycling simply means converting waste material into something new that can be used effectively. There are many materials that are being recycled today including plastic bags, tin cans, bottles, thrown away paper, juice cartons, and many more. Recycling is important because it saves the earth from pollution and is an efficient use of energy.
Civil rights are the rights that are observed to protect the freedom of common people from the government, private individuals and social organizations. One of the very important rights given by civil rights is the right to vote.
Every person in a country, satisfying the legal requirements of nationality, has the right to vote and elect the political public representatives, mostly the president. Every person 18 years of age or older has the right to vote.
It is necessary for a kid to know their rights in a state, it enables them to have a better understanding of the law and defending themselves in times of need.

The above are candidate problems. Teachers and mathematicians are gathering in November 2013 to select the final set of thirteen unsolved problems. The results are here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV5-wMGRM3g&feature=share&list=PLSrbLTVLJpchKVD0uUOEa2S-eSK9a3Kxp
When: November 15-17 2013
Where: Banff International Research Station
The conference will also discuss whether the $1,000,000 rewards are a good or bad idea. People have strong opinions on the topic. Some see no other practical way of getting these beautiful problems the exposure they need to inspire students worldwide. However, there are problems:
1) The joy of learning for its own sake may be compromised if the ulterior motive of a cash reward gets into the classroom.
2) The Clay Mathematics Institute released the seven $1,000,000 Millenium problems in 2000. Their purpose is to inspire mathematicians and the problems are tough to understand for non-mathematicians. Here is the problem... Nick Woodhouse says that the Clay Mathematics Institute gets about six wrong solutions every day! We need a different mechanism for dealing with "solutions" so we are not inundated.
3) The system that is set up must also try to minimize legal challenges. Again, the Clay Mathematics Institute has had its fair share of bad experiences here.
______________________________________
For those coming to the November 2013 conference... If you are able, think of some unsolved problems that may be understood by a typical classroom of students. The educators at the conference will help place these into the curriculum and develop them so every child experiences both moments of success and moments of struggle. We need to deliver a sense of accomplishment for all children as they come to understand and work on the unsolved problem.
For example, one potential grade 4 problem is the Collatz (3N+1) conjecture. This unsolved conjecture can be paired with the (3N-1) conjecture which is consistently solved by all grade 4 classrooms: http://youtu.be/R4oINmqHXVY
Here are other potential unsolved problems:
Kindergarten: Packing Squares (Erdős and Graham, 1975)
Grade 1: No-Thee-in-a-Line (Henry Dudeney, 1917)
Grade 2: Sum-Free Partitions (Issai Schur, 1916)
Grade 3: Graceful Tree Conjecture (Ringel, Kotzig & Rosa, 1967)
Grade 4: Collatz Conjecture (Lothar Collatz, 1937)
Grade 5: Play Perudo Perfectly (Atahualpa & Pizarro, 1530s)
Grade 6: RSA Cipher (Rivest, Shamir & Aldeman, 1978)
Grade 7: Egyptian Fraction problem ???
Grade 8: Problem using the Pythagorean Theorem ???
Grade 9: Exponents problem or Three-Body-Problem (D'Alembert & Clairaut, 1747) ???
Grade 10: Inscribed Square Jordan Curve (Otto Toeplitz 1911)
Grade 11: Solutions to x^2 + y^2 + z^2 = 3xyz (Markoff, 1879) ???
Grade 12: ??? (The Sudoku problem on the video above has been solved.)
Here is a tentative list of criteria that you might consider in thinking about suitable unsolved problems: http://www.mathpickle.com/K-12/Criteria.html

Do you know the names of America's Founding Fathers? In Who Are the Founding Fathers?, you and your kids will learn that answer to that question! This video discusses some of the facts about these important individuals. It also talks about some other people who are often considered founding fathers or mothers because of their own contributions to the founding of this nation.
George Washington is referred to as the Father of His Country because he was a great leader. He led the revolutionary army against the British in their war for freedom. He became the president of the United States after a unanimous vote! In fact, four of the seven Founding Fathers became presidents.
This video also describes some of Benjamin Franklin's contributions. Aside from being a politician, he was a scientist and inventor. Did you know he invented bifocal glasses? He and the other Founding Fathers collaborated on several important documents that helped unite the colonists of the country. These include the Declaration of Independence, The Federalist Papers, and the Treaty of Paris. This video also reminds us that these men were not perfect and made many mistakes in their lives.
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about the Founding Fathers of this nation! If you want even more information, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Comets Asteroids and Meteors are all over the solar system. But did you know that each are quite different? You may be wondering "What is a comet?", "What is an asteroid made of?", or "Where does a meteor come from?" Well, sit tight because in this video we will answer all of your questions!
We first take a closer look at asteroids for kids. Asteroids are the largest of the space rocks, but may also
include metal substances. Most of them go around the Sun
between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The area of orbit is
called the Asteroid Belt, which includes an inner and an outer
region. The inner region is made up of asteroids that mostly
contain metal (Gold, Iron, Platinum, and Nickel). The outer region contains asteroids mostly made
up of rocks.
We then explain what a comet is. You can think of a comet
as a large snowball filled with or covered by dust, metal, and debris. They have an icy core, covered by a
layer of black dust. The center is mainly composed of water and gases, frozen and mixed together with bits
of rock and metal. A comet in the outer parts of the Solar System is too small to be seen from Earth. We then talk about the difference between short and long period comets.
Lastly, we explore Meteors, meteoroids, and meteorites. Meteors are sometimes called falling or shooting stars, and they begin
as meteoroids traveling through the Earth’s atmosphere. They are not
stars. They are small pieces of rock or metal originating from a comet or
asteroid. They form from colliding asteroids of debris from comets. A meteorite is a meteoroid that does not burn
up in the Earth’s atmosphere, but instead, falls to
the Earth’s surface.

Do you know what mountains, hills, plateaus, and plains have in common? This video teaches kids all about landforms, particularly these four. Your kids will learn all about the different types and how they form. They will discover many interesting facts. For instance, they will learn about the Himalayas and how they make up the tallest mountain range in the world. Mount Everest is the tallest peak of the Himalayas. It's as tall as 48,000 people standing on each others' shoulders!
Hills are similar to mountains. They aren't as tall, but they form in similar ways. In fact, some mountains, including the Himalayas, started out as hills! Did you know there are two types of plateaus? All plateaus are flat and elevated, and they have steep hills and big cliffs. However, not all plateaus are the same. Dissected plateaus are created from tectonic shifts from the ground up. The Colorado Plateau is one of these. Volcanic plateaus, however, are formed from many small volcanic eruptions that build up over time. Most of the central part of the North Island of New Zealand. You will also learn about plains and how they are unique compared to the other three landforms.
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about these four different landforms! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about landforms, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

How much do you know about the solar system? Did you know the sun is a star? How about the fact that other planets have rings like Saturn? In Planets in the Solar System for Kids, you will learn lots of cool facts about the sun and the planets that orbit it.
A solar system includes a star and the planets and other space objects that travel around it. Our solar system has eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They all consist of different materials, like gases and rocks. Similarly, the sun is made up of hydrogen and helium gases. All the planets orbit around the sun at different speeds. As a result, some planets take shorter or longer than Earth’s typical 365 to fully revolve around the sun. Mercury only takes 88 days, but Neptune take an entire 165 years to orbit the sun!
The planets also rotate at different speeds. Earth takes 24 hours to rotate, so 24 hours equals a day. Comparing that to other planets, a “day” for Venus equals 243 days, yet Jupiter only takes 9.8 hours. Not all the planets rotate the same way either. Venus rotates in the opposite direction as most of the other planets. And Uranus rotates on its side.
Not all the planets have moons either, such as Venus. And other planets have more than just one. Jupiter has at least 79 moons! Saturn has at least 53 that astronomers have discovered so far. Cool fact about Saturn: Galileo saw Saturn through a telescope way back in the 1600s! Speaking of Saturn, it is known for its beautiful rings. Did you know Uranus and Jupiter have rings, too? Let’s see what else you learn!
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about our amazing solar system! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about space, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

Alzheimer's Disease is a type of dementia that causes problems with memory, thinking, and behavior. Dementia is a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving, or language. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common cause of dementia.
Alzheimer's Symptoms: As a person ages, they may forget things. It is normal. However, one of the symptoms of AD is consistent memory loss, especially of recent events and new information. Why do we celebrate Women's History Month? In this video, you and your kids will learn about the significance of women's history. For much of world history, only males wrote and published stories about the past. This was because women were not treated equally to men for much of U.S. and world history. For example, in colonial America, women could not own property or vote in elections.
Except for a few places, females did not go to school. If they were at private academies, women were not taught the same subjects as men. While men learned to read, write Latin, world history, and math, women were taught what was known as "domestic arts," or how to manage a household. It was thought that a woman didn't need education because she was supposed to work at home. Can you imagine that in modern times?
The reason we dedicate an entire month to women’s history is that women have worked tirelessly, without recognition, and frequently at significant risk, to build the country we know today. For example, you probably know the names of Abigail Adams and Harriet Tubman. But have you ever heard of Eleanor Dare? How about Mary Chilton?
In 1980, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the week of March 8 National Women's History Week. One year later, Congress joined with the president by passing a resolution declaring the week of March 8 as the official start of National Women's History Week. Seven years later, Congress passed a law authorizing the president to proclaim March as Women's History Month, and it has been celebrated ever since.
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about why we celebrate women throughout history! If you want even more information, head over to our website and download one of our many lesson plans, full of activities, worksheets, and more!
