Teaching measurement and comparing lengths has many benefits. Young children that have a good understanding of measurement have the skills to compare attributes of objects and classify things in their environments in different ways. Measurement links math to their everyday lives, other school subjects, and increases understanding of number concepts and spatial skills.
At Kid’s Academy, measurement and comparing lengths are explained and taught clearly and concisely with video lessons and worksheet activities.
The video lessons include instruction on comparing lengths and height of objects. Students learn how to classify objects as tallest, shortest, or longer and shorter. Students use higher order thinking skills to answer questions such as: what is the second shortest object or what object is shorter than the giraffe but taller than the tiger? The recorded lessons about comparing lengths for kids include answering questions such as finding the correct illustration with clues such as: Emma is shorter that Jenny, Jenny is shorter than Sarah. The video teachers define measurement terms and show students how to think through the more difficult questions with illustrations and examples on the teacher whiteboard.
Often in life, measuring without a ruler or other tool is required. Students, using these video lessons have the opportunity to measure items using non-standard units as well as measuring using an inch ruler. Comparing non-standard units to standard measurement tools allows students to connect measurement to their world.
Think of activities that go beyond the video lessons. Comparing length for kids is more fun when learning is extended. Compare the heights of children in the home or classroom. In the classroom, who has the longest pencil as compared to the teacher’s pencil? Ask the students if it is better to measure the length of a book with paper clips or a broomstick. Go outside and measure the length of the playground with a yardstick and a ruler. Have fun with this math skill!
The video illustrations are colorful, engaging and relevant for school and home classes that are comparing lengths for 1st grade. Teachers and parents using these resources from Kids Academy find the videos ideal for teaching, re-teaching, practice and enrichment.

This algebra video tutorial provides a basic introduction into inverse functions. it explains how to find the inverse function by switching the x and y variables. It also explains how to prove if two functions are inverses of each by checking to see if the composite functions of f(g(x)) and g(f(x)) are equal to x. In addition, it explains how to graph the inverse function around the line y=x. Finally, it highlights the difference between the vertical line test and the horizontal line test as it relates to one to one functions and inverse functions. The vertical line test tells if a relation is a function. The horizontal line test tells you if the function is one to one and if the inverse relation is a function.

Did you know that mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, and amphibians all have quite a few traits in common? In this video for kids, you and your students will learn all about the different animals that belong to a group we call vertebrates. When you think of vertebrates, you probably think of the presence of a backbone. But there are even more common traits among these unique animals.
There are five key characteristics that distinguish vertebrates from other animals. They have backbones, skulls, endoskeletons, bilateral symmetry, and two pairs of appendages. These traits allow their muscles to attach to points that can be used for movement. All vertebrates also have a heart and kidneys.
Vertebrates further classify into seven classes based on their anatomical features. These classes are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, bony fish, cartilaginous fish, and jawless fish. Mammals are endothermic so they can regulate their body temperature. Birds have feathers and toothless beaks. They also lay hard-shelled eggs. Reptiles also lay eggs. Reptiles include snakes and crocodiles. Amphibians are a little unique in that they undergo metamorphosis as they go from birth to adulthood.
The fish group divides into three classes: bony fish, cartilaginous fish, and jawless fish. Bony fish, like seahorses, have a skeleton made of bone rather than cartilage. Bony fish is the largest class of vertebrates. Sharks and rays are examples of cartilaginous fish. Primitive fish like hagfish belong to the jawless fish category.
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about this small group of animals! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many lesson plans about different kinds of animals, full of activities, worksheets, and more!

The human eye is a fascinating organ in our bodies. Do you know how it works? In The Human Eye for Kids video, you will learn how exactly our eyes use light to create images. The muscles that make our eyes blink are the fastest-moving muscles we have! They are both voluntary and involuntary, so we can blink on purpose and blink as a reflex to bright light or dust in the air.
The reason we blink in the first place is that we need to keep our eyes clean. Blinking keeps dirt and other substances from getting in our eyes, and it helps keep them moist and not get too dry. Tears also help keep our eyes clean (and, of course, keep them from drying out). These important drops of water are made using the lacrimal glands.
The white part of your eye is the sclera, which is the outer covering of the eyeball that contains blood vessels that help blood flow to the eyeball. The cornea is a transparent dome in front of the colorful part of your eye. It helps your eye focus when exposed to light, kind of like a window. Something called the anterior chamber is the space between the cornea and iris that is filled with a transparent fluid that keeps the eye healthy.
Speaking of the colorful part of your eye, that is your iris. The iris works with the pupil, which is the black part of your eye, in an interesting way. Light travels through the iris before arriving at the pupil. Muscles attached to the iris change its shape to control the amount of light that gets through the pupil. The pupil is what lets light enter your eye. It gets bigger when we need more light and shrinks when there's plenty of light.
We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning about your eyes! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free lesson plans about the human body, full of activities, worksheets, and more!
