Galileo Galilei for Kids | Learn about this famous scientist and mathematician Teacherflix 6 Views • 2 years ago

When you hear the name Galileo, what do you think about? Galileo Galilei is often associated with telescopes, the universe, and being imprisoned for his discoveries. In Galileo Galilei for Kids, you will learn a lot more about this amazing scientist and mathematician and his inventions and scientific discoveries.

Galileo was the oldest of six kids. Galileo studied medicine in college and later switched to mathematics. However, he ran out of money and had to drop out. This setback didn't stop him from continuing to study on his own time. He supported himself by teaching math and art to others.

Around the year 1609, Galileo learned about the telescope. Some people think he invented the tool, but that is not true. He was simply the first to use it (or use the one he built and improved) to study the stars. He discovered that Venus had phases, and he discovered four moons that revolve around Jupiter. These moons are now known as the Galilean Satellites in his honor.

Galileo also studied Copernicus's theory that the sun was the center of the universe, and even had evidence to support his theory. This led to his arrest and imprisonment by the Roman Catholic church. The church still taught that Earth was the center of the universe, which Galileo discovered wasn't the case. Despite being told not to teach Copernicus's ideas or beliefs anymore, Galileo continued to do so and was branded a heretic. He was sentenced to life in prison. The church officially apologized for arresting Galileo in 1992, which is 392 years after Galileo's death!

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He was born on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. Lincoln educated himself using borrowed books. He never went to a formal school and at age 25 he got into politics and became an Illinois legislator. He began studying the law and worked as a lawyer, and later became a U.S. Congressman, but then lost trying to become a Senator. He argued against slavery, and fought hard his whole life to end that practice. In 1860 he became the President of the United States and during his term the United States broke out into a Civil War largely because of differing views about Slavery.

During the war Lincoln singed the Emancipation Proclamation that eventually lead to the 13th Amendment which ultimately helped abolish Slavery and freed millions of slaves. At the height of the Civil War he gave one of the most famous speeches in History...The Gettysburg Address. He was instrumental in the Civil War Victory and changed the path of history forever. Mount Rushmore for Kids | Learn all about the history of Mount Rushmore Teacherflix 6 Views • 2 years ago

Mount Rushmore is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States. What do you know about the monument and the individuals whose heads you see? In Mount Rushmore for Kids, you and your students will learn about some of the history behind this huge sculpture. You will also discover why the four presidents on its face were chosen to be the subjects of the monument.

Construction for Mount Rushmore began in 1927. Much earlier in 1884, a lawyer from New York named Charles E. Rushmore traveled to South Dakota's Black Hills National Forest. He decided to name the mountain after himself when he learned that it had never been named before. Fast forward to the 1920s: There was some discussion over a period of years about who to sculpt into the mountainside. In the end, the subjects they agreed upon were George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt.

It took 14 years to build the monument and required the help of nearly 400 men and women who served in various capacities. They had to endure extreme weather condition and had to climb 700 stairs every day to reach the top of the mountain! An interesting fact you may not know is that 90% of the mountain was carved using dynamite. Despite these dangerous conditions, not one worker died in all 14 years.

You may wonder why those four presidents were chosen. George Washington led the colonists in the American Revolutionary War. He was the "Father of the Country" and the first president. He was chosen to represent birth. Thomas Jefferson was chosen to represent growth because of his role in expanding the size of the U.S. by purchasing the Louisiana Territory. Abraham Lincoln represented the preservation of the nation because of his impact on preserving the Union during the Civil War and abolishing slavery. And finally, Theodore Roosevelt provided leadership when America experienced rapid growth. he also linked the east and west parts of the world through the construction of the Panama Canal. He represented development.
